Hmm, it looks as you've downloaded the source and not the binary package. If
I'm not misstaken that would get installed in /usr/src/Redhat or something
similar.

All the time; that's why I aliased "sl" to "ls-F". :)
Besides, I'm not aware of an "sl" command.
(I checked--unaliased sl, and got "sl: Command not found.")
That sounds like a setup, so what's your argument? That I mistype
"ls" as "sl", which *JUST SO HAPPENS* is the name a hacker gave to
a command in my path?

"It works for me" does not mean "it works." It means it is possible to
make it work under some unknown conditions.

I have stopped reporting bugs to Debian. The Debian team demands
more of people who report bugs than I can provide.
I stopped trying to put things in their FAQ-o-matic, too.

Your derision is uncalled for. .html.gz is unusual. It breaks
Web service, because mime.types only handles suffixes with no dots
in them. It's not an obvious thing to search for.
It apparently breaks dwww, too, since that program can't find the
compressed /usr/doc files.
When I am trying to use a system, even one as excellent as Debian,
I have little patience for people who think it's a fun puzzle for a
lazy afternoon. The "I dare you to figure out how to use my system"
attitude is what keeps Microsoft in power. Debian is a great
system, but it still flunks Usability 101, and its obscure and
fragmented documentation is Reason #1.

Subject: Add your system to linux resource
Date: Sun, 27 Jun 1999 20:12:06 GMT
I'm starting a desktop linux resource - entirely submission based from
linux users.
http://home.earthlink.net/~christian77/
This page will allow users to confirm that their particular system
runs linux. Mainly though, it will be for configuration and
troubleshooting of a particular system.
Ex. you run linux on a Gateway 2000. Create a simple web page
describing your hardware and Xconfig etc. Send it to me - I'll host
it. Or host it yourself and send me the link.
If you want to add a page or link describing your hardware and your
configuration, send it to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
thanks,
BTW - this isn't a commercial venture. It is solely to support linux.

I agree. This isn't what I want to find out. I want to know why
people always say putting `.' in your PATH, even at the end of
it (and in light of bash's order of searching for command names),
why that's a security risk. I believe it may be just some relic
from old Unix days, or worse, just some propagated sophism which
thrives on people's fear. If it has some legitimate reason, then
okay, but if it's some form of Luddism, it pisses me off. I don't
think anyone answered yet, beyond saying "for security reasons".
This isn't the fucking National Security Agency. Someone can tell
me. Really. Does everyone just not know the real reason? Is the
emperor wearing clothes? Step by step logic, cite references,
that type of thing... Can I lookup some article at the library,
some webpage, anything? I don't think the arguments I've heard
hold, and the fact that everyone repeats that 'ls' argument
tends to support my hypothesis that nobody really knows and
it's just being parrotted.
(Considering how flippant I've been about security, maybe you'll
be surprised that my account was hacked before. (I was on
Long Island, telnetting back to my account here--system there
didn't have ssh.) I take it seriously, but I don't go hysterical
for no reason...)

I have ReadHat 6.0, and netscape 4.6-1.
It seems that whenever netscape launched a java applet,
an error message comes up, and netscape crashes before I
can read the error. I recall hearing there was some problem
with the netscape and Redhat 6.0, but can't find any info
on it. What sould I do--get an old version of netscape?
If so, which one, and from where.
A pointer to a site where this is discussed would also be good.

I'm sure I've used .html.gz before, but perhaps it was an accidental
success. Still, shouldn't .html.gz simply be
Content-Encoding: x-gzip
Content-Type: text/html
It seems to make sense to have this for .tar:
Content-Type: application/x-tar
But this for both .tgz and for .tar.gz:
Content-Encoding: x-gzip
Content-Type: application/x-tar

Hi,
Well I upgraded my kernel to 2.2.8 and for the parallel
port, it uses parport.
Fine. I compiled parport. parport_pc, and lp as modules.
I follow the linux/Documantation/parport.txt:
# insmod parport.o
# insmod parport_pc.o io=0x3bc,0x378,0x278 irq=none,7,auto
What I get when I try to print is:
bash# lpq
waiting for lp to become ready (offline ?)
Rank Owner Job Files Total Size
1st root 76 test.txt 21
bytes
When I check the loaded modules:
bash# /sbin/lsmod
Module Size Used by
parport_pc 5496 0
lp 4264 0 (autoclean) (unused)
parport 6520 0 (autoclean) [parport_pc
lp]

Date: Sun, 27 Jun 1999 22:52:38 GMT
Actually, there was a bug in the sound playback lib used prior to the
2.2 kernel. That has been fixed now, and unfortubately, RealPlayer 5.0
realied on the bug in order to work. There are a couple of work arounds
available, the simplest (and smallest) being open.so. Do a search on
real.com for open.so, and you should find where to download it.
Better yet, download the G2 alpha, which plays modern streams (better
compression), and does not rely on the above patch to work.
hope this helps ya out ....
