The CheapBytes version is the downloadable version you find online, the
Walnut Creek version is the Official Slackware, with CD images mastered
by Pat Volkerding himself. I went with Walnut Creek specifically because
I wanted my money to go to those who actually put it (Slackware) together
and maintain it.

I thought is was a particularly uninformative and usless message. Sorry to the

as well just say "An error occurred".
I got them while tring to set up network routes, and did find useful info by
doing a http://www.deja.com search on "route siocaddrt" or some such thing.
Try a deja search on "siocaddrt scsi" or some combination.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello all,
This is not a problem, just a question for advise.
I am a Slackware user, and I have always recompiled my installation
to match my hardware. I have installed Red Hat 6.0 at work, and
everything seems to work right out of the box without a recompile. This
is great, but shouldn't the kernel be recompiled to match the hardware?
I have *not* read the manual on the subject, I wanted to get the
opinions of others.
Thanks in advance,

There are multiple servers. I, too, have gotten 404 errors
that are resolved when a reload brings me to a different server.
However, it would be rather stupid to blame it on IIS. The
problem is obviously in synchronization of the HTTP files.

I think so. WE< THE linux community must accept the "defeats" for now.
It's not the end of the world, you know. Besides, it'll just make Linux
better in the long run. The tests did identified the weakness of the IP
stacks in the Linux kernel. And that's good. Can't wait what the 2.3.x
kernel
can do in a few weeks' time.

Sure. How many servers can really saturate a T-1 anyway, not to mention
multiple T-3s.
If I need that kind of speed, I'll go with multi-boxes of Linux or
FreeBSD.
Or if money is no object, then, I'll choose Sun Solaris or Alpha.

including sales tax.

A buffer underrun creates a coaster. Should not be a problem with SCSI,
use some caution with ATAPI, and I wouldn't even consider parallel
port. Windows users should avoid "features" like Active Desktop and
Fast File Find, which seem to grab resources when least convenient.
Using Linux with a Ricoh 6201S, a 2X burner with a 2MB buffer and a SCSI
I/F, I've never created a coaster from buffer underrun. Cockpit error,
yes.
I like CDR for archives, tape for backups.

I haven't tried it on RedHat though maybe that'd be

Subject: Memory usage monitoring utility
Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 03:46:17 GMT
Are there others utilities (other than top, ps) that allows you to see
what are loaded in memory???
For example, neither 'top' nor 'ps' shows me the modules loaded. Of
course, I could use lsmod and top, but is there one single program that
shows you EVERYTHING (processes, modules loaded, memory caching
used by filesystem(!?), memory used by kernel!???, etc....).
Furthermore, is there a progam which does the above (summary), plus
shows the memory addresses used (detailed), so I can see memory
fragmentation(!?), or so that you can see what is the largest free block
available?
The reason I am asking is that, after startup, my 64MB machine has about
40MB+ free physical memory (using free). Then run startx, run some apps
(i.e.: netscape), etc..., then shutdown X.
Do 'free' again, this time, I only have 15MB free. The modules loaded
does not account for the difference of 30MB, nor does 'ps' nor 'top'
show where did the 30MB has gone. The runnning processes (ps axf) before
and after running X are the same.
Thanks,
John Salvo
