Hello,

How do I fix a garbled terminal?

My terminal gets garbled when I do something like:

$ cat ~/.Xauthority

on Red Hat systems.

Thanks,

Yes, file core. It should tell at least who was the bummer. If not, not a
usual case but for instance if A starts B and both core (believe me, this
happens) a strings -a core | less might reveal something. Strange though,
I cannot think of what it could be.

Subject: RH6.0: mouse problem in text mode
Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 22:45:38 +0200

I am running RH6.0 and have a normal serial logitech mouse (3 buttons)
on /dev/ttyS0 configured by mouseconfig as "Microsoft" type. (I guess it

is an alias for "ms").
In X mode my mouse works perfectly.
In text mode with the gpm daemon running, I see the mouse moving as I
want and the copy & paste feature works too.
The problem is when I run Midnight Commander. The buttons don't work (I
cannot pull down the menus, moving through the directories and so on).
Something much strange happen when using Lynx. The left button doesn't
work and pressing the middle one, lynx seems to enter in a loop moving
everywhere, changing url, saving configurations (???).
Running the mev utility I can see the mouse events are trapped correctly

(each button is identified, press and release events too, movements too
and so on).
Before using RH6.0 I have used for a few days a Debian distribution and
in that case the mouse was working correctly both in text and X modes.

Another thing I don't understand:
Running linuxconf (both in text mode or within KDE and with my mouse
moving on the screen), and quitting without making any change, it says
the status is not in sync with the current configuration and when I ask
to see what is to be updated it says that '/etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S85gpm start'

is to be executed.

Is out there someone with a suggestion ?

I have the same problem. The mouse clicks don't work only in text mode.
Everything is fine in X mode. I have a logitech serial mouse, 3 buttons on
ttyS0. Can you tell me if you find a solution to this thing? I will do the same
if I find what is wrong.

        You can use ShowFat 3.0 to determine what the files are. You
can grab it from:
        http://www8.pair.com/dmurdoch/programs/showfat.htm

        Another note: when using Windows98's defragger, make sure the
box labelled "let windows move files around" is UNCHECKED. Otherwise,
you'll get random files moved to the last cylinder of your partition.

Subject: HDD very slow ?
Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 21:39:03 +0200

Hi

I've made a simple test to see if my Linux I've just installed is well
configured : copy of a big directory from one drive to another.

I compared the results with W98 and I found that my Linux takes twice W98's
time to perform the operation (1,7 Go : 10 mn with W98 & 21 mn with Linux).
I thought that this could be :
- W98 CopyFile uses asynchronous IO or is threaded ;
- the 2 disks are on different IDE controller.

So I remade the test on a single disk (=> Serialization of HDD commands on a
single IDE controler), but Linux is still very slow. So I looked at hdparm
(version
3.3) and found that :
1. 32 bits IO support is disabled by default, but 32 bits doesn't sole the
pb (hdparm -c1) ;
2. DMA is active (chosen by kernel configuration, verified with hdparm) ;
3. X34 hangs my computer => no UDMA.

I think the problem is there, but I didn't managed to activate UDMA. My
chipset is an Intel LX, and I have 2 HDD UDMA (1 WD 4Go, 1 IBM 8Go).
Linux Kernel 2.2.10, distro SuSE.

Does anybody have an idea / similar pb ?

Thanks

Installation is succesful after patching the glibcpatch.

The instance is launched and the listener is started succesfully. (see
the http://www.wgs.com/LDP/HOWTO/Oracle-HOWTO-4.html)

However I can't access to the database from my client software (my

Usually this ORA 01034 error happens when the instance is not started.

Neither Linux or NT comes out of the box secure. If your admins are
thinking that NT is secure out of the box, then they are in for a world of
hurt. Both take time and knowledge to get them to a more secure state.
Just as many bugs are found on a NT server as comes out with Linux. I
Believe there have been about 4 devistating bugs found in IIS 4.0 in the
last month or two. The difference seems to be that the Linux community is
more willing to share the fact that "hey we messed up" than MS will (who
seems to be more forced into fixing the problem than dedicated to fixing
the problem).

I am basically repeating what everybody else has said, but security is what
you put into it. A admin's job is to keep the network secure. If they
don't want to take the time to do this, then why bother having network
administrators in the first place?

The reason why you can run 5.2 binaries on
a 6.0 machine but can't run 6.0 binaries on
a 5.2 machine is that many of the binaries
are updated on the 6.0 release. Frequently
when a new release comes out, it also
contains the prior release libraries of those
libraries that have been updated. This
allows it to run older binaries. But a
binary from a new release can't run on an old
release of the system because the older
system doesn't have the updated libraries.
This is a problem with all distributions not
just RedHat.

I haven't been able to find a solution to my problem, so I hope someone here
might be able to lead me in the right direction.

I've been trying to install Red Hat on a laptop (that already contains
WIN95) by creating another partion, but I have been unable to allocate
enough contiguous hard disk space. There is almost 200 MB of free disk space
I can use, but I have a read-only/hidden file somewhere near the bottom of
the hard disk space that prevents me to create a partition larger than 20MB.
When I use MS's defrag I can see the "unmovable" block near the end of the
hard disk, but I don't know what file it is. Is there any utilities out
there that could help me determine what file it is so I could either move it
or delete it?

Thanks.

Jesus Christ, that's disgusting.

BTW, you might like to know that American incompetance helped lead to
the British losing very badly (Over 300 miles lost in around 14 days).

The Americans had signed a deal with the British to share intelligence
before they got involved. In an American base in Egypt, they had an
Italian (Clue Alert!) employee working for them. Every night, that
employee would retrieve that day's reports from the safe and transmit
them to the Germans.

The phrase "How stupid can you get" springs to mind.

I had this same problem. Here's what I did;
rename .netscape directory to something else. Start netscape.
Netscape then creates a new .netscape directory, as though it's the
first time it's been run. Not sure what's messed up in .netscape,
but I don't get bus errors anymore.

I remember the Release Notes or Instructions for FIPS gave the name of
that file.

Here is something from their instructions doc.

But before starting FIPS you _must_ now defragment your Harddisk. All of
the
space that will be used for the new partition must be free. Be aware
that the
Windows Swapfile will not be moved by most defragmentation programs. You
must
uninstall it (in the 386enhanced part of the Windows Control Panel) and
rein-
stall it after using FIPS.
If you use IMAGE or MIRROR, the last sector of the hard disk contains a
hidden system file with a pointer to your mirror files. You _must_
delete this
file before using FIPS (it will be recreated the next time you run
mirror).
Do 'attrib -r -s -h image.idx' or 'attrib -r -s -h mirorsav.fil' in the
root
directory, then delete the file.

Maybe that's it.

After you have the PNP stuff set up for your modem, you need to use
setserial to let linux know about your modem. Something like this:
setserial /dev/ttyS2 port 0x03E8 irq 5 uart 16550A

I assume you're using COM3, otherwise substitute one of the following for
/dev/ttyS2:
COM1 = /dev/ttyS0
COM2 = /dev/ttyS1
COM4 = /dev/ttyS3

Put this setserial command in your /etc/rc.d/rc.serial file (create one if
it doesn't exist, make sure it's executable).

After following these steps, your modem should work fine. Don't forget to
link /dev/ttyS2 (or whatever your port is) to /dev/modem.
