OK, so it helps if I leave 'SSLEngine on' in the config file. Sorry
about that it's now working (with locally generated cerificates, which
is all right by me).

Subject: Installation prob with Win2000 & Corel Linux ver 1
Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 12:29:45 GMT

Can anyone help with the following problems with
the installation of Corel Linux Ver 1 to coexist
with Win2000 and win98 on a separate drive?

My DELL PC currently has two hard drives
My primary HD (hda) has windows 98 installed
My secondary HD (hdb) is where I want to install
Linux and Win2000. 2Gb for Linux and 18GB for
win2000

In the first attempt at installing I installed
win2000 onto the first partition on hdb with no
problems. I then tried to install Linux into the
second partition but upon reboot there was no
recognition of the Linux install and a Linux boot
disk wouldnt pick up the installation either.
After researching into this I believe it was due
to the Linux installation past cylinder 1024.

In the second attempt I have installed Linux
first onto hdb in partition 1. The installation
goes fine and the machine reboots and I can
access Linux and win98 on hda with no problems.
I then went to install win2000 on the second
partition of hdb but after the machine reboots it
of course goes straight into LILO and the Linux
boot screen. I can exit this and goto the MS
windows boot screen but the Win2000 installation
doesnt continue.
To get round this I booted into Linux again, made
a Linux boot disk and disabled LILO from booting
up. I tested the boot disk and this works fine
and without this disk in drive A my machine will
boot up the windows boot options at start-up. I
then tried to install Win2000 again onto the
second partition of hdb hoping that after the
reboot with LILO disabled the install would
continue, but I still get the old windows bootup
options and selecting the win2000 option results
in an error relating to NTSKERNEL not installed
or present (obviously due to win2000 not
completing installation).

My question is, how do I get Win2000 to continue
installation and allow me to have Linux & Win2000
both on hdb.

Many Thanks,
Richard

I don't think there are any email _clients_ that will do what you want,
but there are a few utilities that will convert OE5 mail folders to Mbox
format. You can then use pretty much any Linux-based email client with
your newly-converted folders.

The utility I used to convert the OE5 mailboxes is called "oe2mbx",
which I think I downloaded from http://freshmeat.net/

If you can't find it there, email me directly and I can send you the
source, since the program is tiny ...

Subject: Debian & Win98 using LILO?
Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 15:39:59 +0200

I'm not very experienced with linux-installations so please be patient with
me :)

I'm trying to install Debian on a Win98 machine containing one physical
harddisk,
seperated in several partitions. The linux-installation itself is not the
problem
(at least, not the biggest...). The problem is I can't get LILO working.
While
installing Debian, you can install LILO. I get some error (about the
installation
not being able to install LILO, mentioning I can still use a floppy to boot,
etc..)

I read something about LILO needing to be in the boot-sector of a harddisk
or
before the ....st sector?!? This is a bit difficult since my windows
partition uses
the first 5Gb. And if I put my linux-partition first, wouldn't I have a
problem with
windows needing a boot-sector?!?
Can somebody help me out with this? I'd be veryg grateful if somebody could
show me how to organize my partition-table or where I can find a good
tutorial
about this subject. I've been looking for such a thing for a while now but I
can't
find anything which makes much sence to me yet.

Mirax

or go thru Oracle's technet at http://technet.oracle.com join up then
go to http://www.oracle.com/start/otn/index.html and have them mail
you the cd. It is faster than trying to dl over Oracle's usually

My server is going to be for mild usage (5-10 users max, probably no more

Was RH 6.2 a bad choice? If it is, I'd like to know now, rather then 6

Can anyone give me a clue why this is happening:

When I boot up to the "LILO boot:" prompt, if I type in "linux", the
keyboard won't work when I get to the "login" prompt (booting into text
mode, not X windows). I can telnet into the system, but can't get the
keyboard to affect anything, even the screen blanker.
But, if I enter "linux single" at the "LILO boot:" prompt, the
keyboard DOES work, and I can log in normally. But can't do much.

What file would cause this behavior?

since the BIOS of most PC's cannot have access to locations on HDD
beyond cyl. 1024 the kernel image of your OS must be before that limit.
(BTW newer BIOS'es have extensions that make it possible to boot from
beyond cyl. 1024)
Most likely teh limit of 1024 cyl. is at ~8 GB, so there's most likely
nothing to worry about. All you need to do is during the linux install
make a partition, called /boot, that resides entirely below cyl. 1024.
This partition needs only be about 10 MB. Then the installer will
probably stop issuing warnings about unbootable systems. (You can use
`fdisk -l /dev/hda` to see where the cylinder limit of 1024 is located).
IIRC there's a partition HOWTO (or perhaps a dual boot HOWTO). It my be
on the discs you have, otherwise search the web)
Partition table for you could look like:

/dev/hda1 5 GB (win98 C:)
/dev/hda2 10 MB (/boot) <-- install lilo here too, not in MBR
/dev/hda3 (rest of disc, make it extended)
/dev/hda5 rest-minus-swapspace (/)
/dev/hda6 size depends on your physical RAM (equal size), this is swap

I try to connect an external terminal though serial port (RS232) to my
Redhat 6.1 Linux box. I did:
- add "S0:23:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS0 DT9600 vt100" to /etc/inittab
- Restart init: "init q"

In getty defs there is a line (I did not change anything):
DT9600# B9600 CS8 CLOCAL # B9600 SANE -ISTRIP CLOCAL #@S login: #DT9600

According Text-Terminal-HOWTO it should work, but I can't login.
- The login promt occurs normally.
- After typing my username and ENTER, I can't do anything on the
terminal; it freezes. Not
even the password prompt occurs.

I think, the /sbin/login is never called. Does anybody know, what's the
problem here?

To define the problem closer, I tried the following:
- If I press only ENTER (without entering a username), it clears the
screen and puts again the login promt (as exspected)
- If I use only CAPITAL letters in the username, it warns me a about and
gives another try (as exspected).
- Also rebooting the whole system did not help.
- If the terminal is frozen, I can get back to the login promt by
killing the corresponding getty process.

Any help is appreciated.

OpenBSD is usually most highly regarded as far as security is concerned,
but any of the Linux distributions can be set up fairly securely as long as
you apply all of the relevant updates and don't install services you
don't need. RedHat 7 (due imminently) is supposed to be more secure
"out of the box" than the default installs of earlier versions and
there are derived distributions (Bastille Linux IIRC) that would do
most of the security configuration for you. Definitely install
portsentry and openssh, and read some of the readily available howtos
on security. As far as stability is concerned, you need have no fear.

I hit the same problem, and I'm working toward recompiling the kernel to
get around it, but I'm looking for other solutions because recompiling
kernel's makes me nervous, and if I do have to do it I would much rather
be able to use the 750 mhz T-bird rather than a backup 133 mhz pentium.

I've dug around in the kernel code and found the code that aborting. It
looks like I should be able to disable the logic that is attempting to
disable to CPUID number by setting a runtime parameter
disable_x86_serial_nr to zero. Specifying "linux disable_x86_serial_nr=0"
on the lilo boot line doesn't work, nor does adding the parameter to the
lilo configuration file. I've never tried to set boot time parameters
before and am wondering if there is something really obvious that I am
missing.

Thanks in advance for any help.
