I hope there are a lot of contradictions between you and Jim Collas;
the last thing we need at this point is for Amiga to take your half-baked
advice and go with the VIC instead of proven solutions like Java or REBOL.

You'll find that the limit is 4 md devices. You can probably change it to
some larger number and rebuild your kernel. However, there are no guarantees
that it will work with more than 4.

Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 19:06:03 -0700
Hi, I have a SUSE 6.1 installation to which I have
been trying to install the Soundblaster Live drivers..
I had it working but no now. I tried to reinstall following
the directions provided by the README file.
I copied the required driver and added
alias sound sblive
pre-install sblive insmod soundcore
post-remove sblive rmmod soundcore
to the /etc/conf.modules files.
When I try to load the driver:
modprobe sblive
I receive an error saying that soundcore.o does not exist.
However, in the first part of the instructions it told
me to remove any sound drivers from /lib/modules/2.2.5/misc
including soundcore, so I removed the file.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

VNC is not "another OS". It's just a stateless remote display
system. The URL is
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/
It's from ORL. The "O" stands for *Olivetti*, not Oracle :-))
AT&T bought ORL, but VNC is still free. I use it all the time,
and it is simply *FABULOUS*!
Here's a snippet from the VNC website:

What is VNC? - A practical introduction
VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. It is, in essence, a remote
display system which allows you to view a computing 'desktop'
environment not only on the machine where it is running, but from
anywhere on the Internet and from a wide variety of machine
architectures.

I don't think I've yet found a major brand computer that I like. All
of them use screwy parts along with some solids ones. I'm much happier
with the systems I've pieced together. But at work you're often stuck
with a single source, so you do what you can.

What is your problem?
Booting from a floppy (distribution doesn't matter, your SYSLINUX will work
just as well as a RedHat emergency floppy or a Slackware boot/root disk
combo) is the standard way to get access to system, that won't boot from HD
any more.
Or are you upset about this being a potential security hole? Of course it
is. Then fix it by disabling "boot from floppy" in the system BIOS.
Oh, and don't forget to protect the BIOS settings with a password.
Oh, and don't forget to lock the computer case, otherwise someone could
switch the jumper and reset the BIOS settings (including the password and
boot sequence) to default.
Oh, and don't forget to put an armed guard next to the computer, because
otherwise someone could break the lock.
It's your call how much security you need.

I'm running a Creative Graphics Blaster Exxtreme (4mb) and it does
1600X1200 up to 24-bit just fine. I usually run it at 16-bit color
depth for speed, though. 3 bytes per pixel at that resolution is a LOT
of data to move, even with 100 mHz vRAM and a 230 mHz RAMDAC.
Cost me about $100 roughly a year and a half ago, probably considerably
less, now.

You can run the config files directly, they're actually scripts that
call the executable.

The way their licensing works, you can get personal e-mail support, but
only if you buy a commercial license, $299; there's no support other
than their newsgroups (on news.vmware.com) for evaluation and
non-commercial licenses. But some of their techs are all the time on the
newsgroups, and really useful.

Have you tried their vmware-mount perl script? It allows to mount the
virtual disk through loopback in a directory in the host OS.

with kernel 2.2.5 (SuSe 6.1). It seems, that some struct=B4s were changed=
in the kernel source (e.g. file_operations). so the struct=B4s of the old=

affects only in some warnings, but the result is, that every scan
results in a black image. However, is there someone who has already run

A simple, complete tarball of all the entire site would be better IMO.
That way people could browse it at their leisure. I doubt people would
go there searching for a particular thing - I doubt it would get to the
point of being like developer.com.

Also the Perl ones, too.
Hmmm. If I chose to do this, it *could* become a complete archive of
hundreds of scripts and bits of sources. Eeek. I have my doubts as to
whether people would contribute their home-made things, though. Like...
if someone did a simple web interface so users on a network could change
their smbpasswd and passwd, then I don't think they'd submit it. I'd
just be scrambling around searching for nifty things at college (I have
lots of free time...).
Anyway, I'll decide eventually. Thanks for the input.

Firstly, here is an URL for your monitor specs:
http://www.griffintechnology.com/monitors/CTX52.html
It provides horizon and vertical sync ranges for your monitor.
Now, peruse : http://www.xmission.com/~howardm/Xwoes.html
and http://www.xmission.com/~howardm/modelines.html
You should not have to "determine" the video timings per se.
Use the specs and a configuration program like "xf86config"
to write the XF86Config file.
Cheers,
Howard Mann.
