Many, if not all, of the newer "suite" type software that is being released
for Linux should be able to READ powerpoint, and potentially WRITE
powerpoint as well [but that will last only until MS makes powerpoint2000
incompatible with ppt95/97/98...]
In particular, I know StarOffice will read ppt slides [although I have a set
of slides in which the "heading" text ends up with a "strikethrough"
attribute set -- not 100% complete conversion, but a boatload better than
doing it from xerox copies of the presentation slides...] Presumably,
Applixware will do the same, and I'd be very surprised if Corel's entry in
this marketplace couldn't do this as well. [err, does the current
corel-for-windows suite do this?]

No prob.
But make root (i.e. /) as small as possible (mine's 50M), because if a
crash occurs you want to make sure that the probability for / to be
corrupted be minimized. You can always fsck any other partition, but to
fix root, you have to have a rescue floppy handy. Yes, tell me that you
always make an rescue floppy - after every kernel update and after every
new hardware that has been added... :-)

Not a troll. It actually happened to a newbie down the hall. And, yes,
he was running Red Hat. Many folks are running it these days. Basically,
it matters which libraries your system is set up with. I believe he
was using Red Hat 6.0, and the init failed after installation. I told him
to just reboot with the boot floppy, then mount the rescue disk and copy
over and link the correct shared libs. And, this fellow is an experienced

I use cdrecord. It took me about five minutes to learn to use. (It
took much longer to get the CD-RW drive working, mind you.) I
generate my disk images with either mkisofs or xcdroast, depending on
the mood I'm in. Neither took any significant time to learn to use.

Specifically speaking, thanks for clearing that up for me.
Linux is the OS - no matter which distro you use.

If I didn't have specific reasons, I wouldn't be asking. It's mostly
because of the apps it comes with that if I was to install them in RH I
would have a bunch of trouble with conflicting libs and crap like that.
And for 29.95 I don't have to go through the bullshit, or do I?

This may sound stupid, but did you use Yast to set-up that print queue? You
should. If not, delete the entry in your printcap and use Yast to add the
printer. In fact you should always use Yast to perform any sysadmin function
in SuSE. If you choose to not use Yast and do everything manually, you should
disable suseconfig, which you have to do from Yast.
Also I would personally uninstall LPD and install PLP. You can use RPM to
uninstall LPD (rpm -e LPD or similar) and you can use Yast to install PLP in
it's place.
Hope this helps,

Hey. I'd like to ask for information pertaining to wise and unwise choices
when rolling a kernel and specifiing module loading. Where could I find
such information? I ask myself this question: "If given the choice to
compile a device driver as loadable, is it a good idea". I'm not talking
lack of resources either. I'm just saying that for example, would something
that would be frequently accessed possibly be loaded and unloaded into the
kernel frequently as to simulate thrashing? Thanks.

3 easy steps:
-gather the files you want in a directory, with the same tree structure
as on the CD;
-make a *.iso image with mkisofs; 'man mkisofs' for detailed info
-burn the image with cdrecord (or cdwrite, suit yourself).

Subject: NFS mount problem
Date: Fri, 02 Jul 1999 23:37:42 GMT
Hi all,
I've been working on an NFS mounting problem to no avail, so perhaps
someone out there can help me...
I have a machine, running RedHat Linux 6.0, called "server" that has a
directory "/home/test". I would like to be able to mount the
dir read-only over the network from my other similar Linux machine,
called "client". As you can see, these machine names have been changed
to protect the innocent. :-)
Some other info: these machines do not share user ids via NIS or
anything, but all of the network operations are fine. That is, my
network connectivity between the two machines is ok in the sense that I
can ping, telnet, ftp, etc. from one to the other & back. On "server",
all of the necessary daemons seem to be running:
[root@server]# rpcinfo -p
program vers proto port
100000 2 tcp 111 rpcbind
100000 2 udp 111 rpcbind
100024 1 udp 1023 status
100024 1 tcp 601 status
100011 1 udp 609 rquotad
100011 2 udp 609 rquotad
100005 1 udp 619 mountd
100005 1 tcp 621 mountd
100005 2 udp 624 mountd
100005 2 tcp 626 mountd
100005 3 udp 629 mountd
100005 3 tcp 631 mountd
100003 2 udp 2049 nfs
I have also added the following entry in my /etc/exports file:
/home/test (ro)
As you can see, I'm not restricting access to the server from any
particular machine right now because I'm just trying to get this thing
working. I also ran 'exportfs -vr' as well as directly starting and
stopping nfs services at times to make sure the daemons have read the
/etc/exports file correctly... So, as far as I can tell from the NFS
HOWTO, everything should be set up correctly on my server.
On the client, while logged in as root, I run this command:
mount -t nfs -o ro server:/home/test /mn
but it returns this error:
mount: server:/home/test failed, reason given by server: Permission
denied
I also made sure that my hosts.allow and hosts.deny files don't have any
entries in them, so any machine should be allowed to make rpc calls, as
documented in the man pages. In addition, at some point I have tried
all of these other lines in my exports file, one at a time:
/home/test (ro,no_root_squash)
/home/test (rw,no_root_squash)
/home/test (ro,insecure,no_root_squash)
/home/test (ro,insecure)
Does anyone have any idea why this the client continues to print out the
same permissions error message in all of these cases?
One interesting thing to note was that I was able to execute the same
'mount' command locally on 'server'. That is, it was able to correctly
nfs mount /home/test locally onto itself at /mnt. Even though this
isn't actually going over the network, I assume that it still goes
through the rpc / mountd / nfs mechanism and thus works on some level.
It just doesn't seem to want to work from my 'client' machine.
Also FYI: I have a solaris machine that I was able to export a
directory from, and both the 'server' and 'client' linux machines were
able to mount it. So, I don't think there is any problem with the
client, from a mounting standpoint. I also tried to mount the directory
on 'server' from my solaris machine, and that didn't work either. It
gives me this error message instead:
solaris# mount -F nfs -o ro server:/home/test /mnt
nfs mount: server: NFS service not responding
nfs mount: retrying: /mnt
And the command just hangs forever at this point, until I use Ctrl-C.
The funny thing is, in this case, 'server' thinks that the solaris
machine has successfully mounted:
[root@server /etc]# showmount
Hosts on server.foo.com:
solaris.foo.com
Does anyone have any idea what is going on here? Any info will be
greatly appreciated... thanks!

I also have RH5.2 (u/g to kernel 2.2) and Gnome - Yes I had the same
problem. No 'solution' but as a workaround, try editing the config files
in the ishmail/1.3.4/lib directory (Ishmail.*) - It worked on colours/
fonts so at least you can get rid of the disgusting colour scheme.
You may be able to modify the other settings in the options menues that
don't work in the ~/.ishmailrc file .... without being able to tell what
is in those menu items, how can you tell what you're looking for?
Some option menu items do partly work, others die immediately after

hello all
I recompiled my kernel, copied /boot/vmlinuz to /boot/vmlinuz-backup and
copied the newly compiled kernel to /boot/vmlinuz
When I try to boot the system now, I get an error when loading the kernel:
no more data to load (or something similar). Then the system is halted.
I rebooted with a bootdisk, and copied /boot/vmlinuz-backup to
/boot/vmlinuz, but the same message appeared when rebooting. I used the
bootdisk again, and a ls -l pointed out that the /boot/vmlinuz was actually
a link to /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.9-19mdk. /boot/vmlinuz-backup was a real file,
however. I copied my backup to vmlinuz again, but when I reboot with the
bootdisk the link to vmlinuz-2.2.9-19mdk is there again.
Can anyone help me please? What did I do wrong?

The evaluation version is just that. It's only one CD worth that includes the
base OS and add-ons (KDE, Gnome, etc.). The full version is 5 CD's and
contains not only the base OS but also over 800 applications as well. The
retail version contains the full version PLUS some additional commercial
add-ons. For example, SuSE 6.1 retail contains a full version of OSS sound
system, and several special bundled non-freeware apps like IBM's DB/2. Also
it gets you tech support and one of the best manuals available with any
distribution.
