I don't know where this rumor originated, but it is not true.
Hotmail runs on a couple of big iron Sparc Solaris boxes ($1M a pop).
M$ tried to get it running on NT, and that failed.

Does anyone know why Suse trys to enforce the 1023 cylinder limit for the
boot partition ? Redhat's Disk Druid also scoffs at boot partitions over
8.5 GB, but if you use fdisk for partitioning and install, it is OK. But
Suse will not let you install Lilo on large partitions. Very annoying
since Lilo would work fine (as shown by Redhat working) if you could just
get past their 'error' messagebox and just do the install.
As a side note on the Suse vs Redhat comparisions, I'll have to through
my 2 cents in for Redhat. I like the fact that Suse will let me do Tcl
with perl without tracking down downloads to get things working, but Suse
seems to have more in the way of odd behavior traits, such as the Lilo
limitation mentioned above.

Oh, the issues were the same ones I would have had with a CD-R (not
CD-W) drive.
Well, my drive isn't on the "known to work with Linux" list, so I had
the fear issue, for one.
I may have given a wrong impression: every step of getting my CD-RW
drive working was covered, well, in the CD-Writing HOWTO. It's just
a non-straightforward process, particularly when you have to
recompile your kernel to include support for having IDE CD-ROMs seen
as SCSI (because the writing software expects a SCSI device).
Not hard, per se, but time consuming. The HOWTO was indispensable.

There's also rdate -- I have my ip-up script call rdate and set my

Yeah, pretty much like that. I can't test with NT (because I don't
have access to an NT box) but Win95 machines read both CD-Rs and
CD-RWs I create without difficulty.

Almost forgot to mention, my BIOS does not have the 1023 limitation,
although, yes, I do realize that older BIOSes may. I don't understand why
someone with a newer BIOS should be restricted for a limitation that they
do not have.

If you are trying to boot look in the /boot directory for an old kernel
image. I dont recall the name but on my machine I found a good backup
already there when I needed it.
You also might want to use /etc/lilo.conf to have the option of booting
with the kernel of choice. After you edit lilo.conf just run lilo to
update your boot record. Then next time you reboot you can press [TAB]
to see what options you have given yourself.

But despirately needs updating. Disk at once burning exists and can be done
with cdrdao...the HOWTO says its not available. More needs to be put in about
creating ElDorado CDs...its only mentioned as possible....AND it needs more
info on creating images, like how to make an iso/Juliet hybred and why you
would want to....things like that. And actually, a good portion of that
HOWTO came of no use to me....I got enough out of it to get the drive going

I did chech the DISPLAY environment variable, and found that it was set
( correctly I believe) to :0.0
When I tried to run xhost as suggested I got the same error as above,
but with the "emacs:......" portion replaced by
>xhost: unable to open display ":0.0"
When I restart my machine I usually don't have this problem.
Can anyone fill me in as to what is the cause of this, and as to how it
can be resolved.

Not if it's installed somewhere else, and called with LD_LIBRARY_PATH
before starting RP. Using this _particular_ library was the only way to
make it work in Slackware 4.0.

By the way, durring the RH6.0 install it runs you through fdisk or disk
druid to setup your partitions and prompts you for a mount point for
each (except swap). If you enter something like /mnt/dosc for your
msdos/win partition, it'll setup fstab for you.
I'm certainly NOT suggesting that you re-install...just pointing out an
easy way to do this on future installs.

RedHat6 and RealPlayer 5.0 don't go together...
You CAN use RealPlayer G2 Beta for Linux. Finding this on
RealNetworks web site is near impossible, but if you go to
download.com and go to the Linux/Multimedia section, you'll get
a link to it.
And trust me...my system is FAR below the required standards for
the G2 to run, but it runs great on my system. Word of warning
though...not all features are yet implemented, so it's not as easy
to use as you're used to.

If you are refering to something along the lines of an icq program with

Well, depends....CD-R is record only, can't be erased for 1, and can't do RW
like DirectCD. Which brings up another diff, in that DirectCD uses "packet
writing" which is entirily different from burning an iso image. Linux is so
far unable to do packet writing afaik.

How different is the OSS driver in SuSE from the one that cost
$20? I didn't bother installing the one that comes with SuSE
since I had allready purchased it.
My only complaint so far is about the Netscape version that
comes with it. I didn't want it installed but it was installed

It would be nice to have a decent version of Netscape on one of the
