Ironically, although you may know slightly more about Linux than I do, I
seem to have greater insight and better understanding of the spirit of
Linux. Let me explain to you. The intension of Linux is to provide a
reliable/dependable product for productivity and utility, for *everyone*; to
help and serve the general public.
By the way, my phrase in the original post is in quotes, so that with use of
some common sense, it'll be obvious that it's in jest; no one is actually
accused of being an idiot.

I will represent the Linux community and tell you that *information* and
*knowledge* regarding Linux is *free*, and will remain so with or without
the upgrade. It's reasonable to pay & charge for time/service for setup of
a computer system. However, not for the information & knowledge. Sharing
of knowledeg is free and is encouraged in Linux.

Hello all,
Does anyone know how I can fix my cut & paste abilities with
netscape 4.75? I'm running RH 7.0, KDE, etc. It seems the cut and
paste option is never enabled or "blacked - in" under "edit" when I'm
running netscape. It sure would be nice to be able to paste in some
URL's.
TIA,
Mike

The messages seem to be a bit different :
I have something like "no keyboard -- noisy cable ?" or something in that
direction . Definitely no "AT Keyboard" or anything .
I haven't searched for them yet, but I see them in the dmesg .
I dunno' about that slow down you mentioned
I switch on my gateway, and the samba server (Long time ago) .Fans, hdd's
spin up.
The gateway emits a single beep .A second later the samba server gives out a
"beeeeeep beep beep beep" noise , and then I hear the POST "all clear"
higher pitched beep. without looking for the initial boot sector and
active-partition read that occurs, I go up the stairs ( this is in the
basement ) , through the living room, and up to my room .By the time i sit
down and flip to the right desktop, i can telnet into both of them. So I am
not sure of what slow down the poster is refering to. But I am using only a
lowly P100 .
If however, one pulls the plug without shutting down, then the forced fsck
on the succeeding boot will take quite a while, depending on the hdd.
If you want to *really* know what a slow boot up is ( on a commercial OS ) ,
boot up win2000 using an ata -66 controller and an ata-66 compatable ide
hdd :) No amount of memory or processing speed will get over the minute
and half it takes to give you that initial login box.
Now _that_ , is a "pain in the arse" .
later.

Arachne is fairly well-developed for DOS, but a bit less so
for Linux. Still, it does frames, cookies, referers, etc.
The 4.1.70 version for DOS even does CSS1. (along with an
integrated e-mail client)
The Linux version is still at 4.1.66, and lacks CSS and e-mail,
but is amazingly functional for a 745K download.
The next Linux release will be at 4.1.72. Judging on the rate
of past releases, that could be anywhere from a few weeks to
a few months.
(neither DOS nor Linux versions support JavaScript... yet)
Use the svgalib version on a console, or get ggi to use it in X.
This is the only graphical browser I'm aware of that runs on a
console. (and don't get scared off by the docs... it's never
crashed my machine, and rarely even chokes on bad HTML)

LILO is fine (so far). Windows *might* clobber the MBR. Windows
*might* need you to clobber the MBR. You can reset the MBR with the
MS-DOS fdisk command:
A:\> FDISK /MBR
(DON'T do this before making a boot floppy as shown below.)

Boot up Linux, then (as root):
/sbin/mkbootdisk `uname -r`
Insert a blank floppy when asked and hit return. Pop the floppy out and
save for later.

Create a compressed tar file:
tar czvf tarfile.tar.gz files...
eXtract a compressed tar file:
tar xzvf tarfile.tar.gz
Type a listing of the contents of a compressed tar file:
tar tzvf tarfile.tar.gz
For an *uncompress* tar file: same as above, but leave out the 'z'.
Quick (eazy to remember) reference (most commonly used options):
c (Create), x (eXtract), t (Type) One of these is needed
z ([un]gZip, optional)
v (Verbose, optional)
f (File) This optional, but generally needed, since the
default is not useful anymore (refers to a older
tape drive device). A file name of '-' is
stdin/stdout (for pipeline usage).

Netscape is kind of weird in this way (and many others) in that
it is a hybrid of Windows and X Window System behavior. Sometimes
the X methods work, not the Edit menus: Click your center mouse key to
paste in a URL you copied from (for example) an X Terminal by
dragging through it with the left mouse button held down, for example.

I am running Mandrake 7.2 and Sylpheed 4.52 built from a source rpm. I had
a previous version, deleted all those settings and started from scratch.
Here is the problem. Fetchmail goes out and gets mail. Korn, Mail and
practically everything else sees multiple files in the spool. I get
Sylpheed to get the mail. Sylpheed then combines all the messages in the
spool into one mail message. I have no clue why it's doing this!
Please help!

Sounds like it might be the Userfriendly comic strip.

(It's a daily strip though you you'll have to trawl through the archives).

Hi to all!
I cant describe how happy i was after installing Linux RH7 successfully on
my Win98/Win2K dual-boot system. As a Linux newbie, i consider this a feat.
Unfortunately, my joy is short-lived for I cant see a thing in Gnome
desktop. My display screen is corrupted. Any menu i click spits out multiple
windows in all directions. Now what? Is there a workaround for this?
Graphics card is 3D Blaster Savage Pro x 32 Mb x 128 RAM memory.

What version is the Konqueror you're using? Mine is 1.9.8 (using KDE 2.0) and
it has the Create New in the Edit menu.

major number 3, minor number 5 .
That's how in my system the linux kernel refers to my root file systes
which is on hda5 )
hda : 3:00
hda1 : 3:01
hda2: 3:02
and so on.
go to /dev and do "ls -al" ( list all, in long format ) and watch.
pipe to "more" to get it page by page . i.e., "ls -al | more".

I've been trying various snapshots of Mozilla - it's currently more
resource intensive than Netscape (and I've found 4.75 and 4.76 very
stable) but quite a good effort. Once you've got Mozilla installed you
can try Galeon - a lighter, browser only option that runs on top of
'zilla.
There's now a usable version of Opera - however it's currently a time
limited version (30 days), unlike it's Windows counterpart.
Nautilus also has a browser component. I wouldn't recommend it for day to
day use as a browser, however. It's currently under serious development.

Hi,
I just compiled the 2.4 kernel under Mandrake 7.2...
Everything worked great (I thought)... No error messages or anything when
compiling...
On booting, however, with the new 2.4 kernel I noticed that eth0 failed,
which suggests that my network card was incorrectly selected when I set up
the new kernel.
My question is, which card should I select, that supports the SMC 1211, when
setting this kernel up?
Thank you for any help... =)
