Hey Brian
I put an alias in my .bashrc in the root dir that says : alias ll =
'ls -ask --colour'
I'm not sure about the "alias ll = " I don't know it by heart, but you'll
see it when you look at the file.
Just enter emacs .bashrc in the console right after you login. then you'll
see a couple of aliases already entered in the file just insert yours after
the last alias. That should work !

Subject: Read error limit?
Date: 06 Jul 1999 14:21:46 GMT
When my CD-ROM drive occasionally flakes out (probably a
dust problem), it can't read the CD-ROM properly. Linux
starts generating error messages followed by hdc: ATAPI reset
in what appears to be an infinite loop. Each of these error
messages occurs after about 5 seconds of trying to read the
CD.
Is there some way to set an error limit so that, after, say
ten tries, it returns some other error code? [In some instances,
I've killed the process that I thought was doing the read (i.e.,
the application I'd started), but the system kept right on trying
to read the disc.
I really need some way to force the CD to stop trying without
having to shut down and restart the system. What is the
obvious fix that I'm missing?

Subject: Travan streamer + DC390 + (Kernel > 2.0.32) = problem
Date: 6 Jul 1999 14:30:54 GMT
I've got a Tekram DC 390 SCSI-II controller in my Linux box (using
the Tekram driver for Tekram DC390/Am 53c974, v2.0d).
There's a HP Colorado T4000s Travan streamer connected to it.
Before updating from SuSE Linux 5.2 (kernel 2.0.32 I believe)
to SuSE 6.1 (kernel 2.2.5) I had no problems using that streamer
for backups (using GNU tar).
After the update it didn't work anymore (I/O error). I even could not
read the tapes I've written before the update! Arrrghh...
Writing a tape also doesn't work anymore.
Then I tried to install kernel 2.0.36 which also didn't work.
Finally I managed to read my old tapes using kernel 2.0.32.
This is of real importance for me - does anyone of you know
if there were major changes in the Tekram or SCSI tape driver?
How could I work arouind this problem? I'd really like to do backups
again. Any hints?
Help would be greatly appreciated.
You can send me an email if you got an idea: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thanks in advance!

Use Rawrite under the DOSUTILS directory and create the boot images. Read

Essentially what I want to do is automatically login the
user; i.e., no entering user name or password, and place them
directly at a menu (after being authenticated of course).
This would be simpler for our customers, and also increase
security since there would be no login prompts to interrogate.
The only software I've seen along these lines is BBS software,
but that's overkill for what I want to do.

That's most often a memory error, sometimes it can be a swap problem, as in
my case, I kept getting this error and found that if I turned swap off it
disappeared. So I dumped the swap partition and installed 128 megs of ram
and -VIOLA- no more sig 11's. So if you have enough memory, try building
without the swap active and see if it will complete. Also CPU heating will
cause this. My wifes machine was getting sig 11's and I put in a new cpu fan
and again -VIOLA- no more sig 11's.
This is a tough problem to track down sometimes. But it's almost always a
hardware problem. And not always a (MEMORY chip) problem. Although the error
involves memory. Get it???
There are those who say it's always a memory chip problem, it ain't
necessarily so. Try the cheap stuff first. (:

Icewm is a good and simple window manager that is Gnome compliant. I installed
icewm but not enlightenment, and gnome-session defaulted to icewm automatically.

Buy more RAM and a faster CPU. (Forget about the video card, it does
not influence the speed of compiles.)
Assuming you are using `make' to control compilation, `make -j
<number>' for low numbers can help slightly, sometimes; use the `time'
command to see if it's doing you any good. You won't get more than a
few percent improvement at most this way though. Pick a too large
number and it will certainly make things worse.
(The effect of -j is to run multiple copies copies of the compiler in
parellel. Superficially you might not expect it to help - but if one
instance of the compiler can be using the CPU while the other is
waiting for the disc, the total elapsed time for a compilation can be
reduced slightly.)

Is SUN support really good? In the mid-80s I was system manager for a
site
with several SUNs (worth several 100K$ at the times!) I have unpleasant
memories of sending dozens
of bug reports and never receiving any acknowledgments, then reading the
release notes for the next release and seeing still nothing, then
installing
it, then seeing the bugs still there... Mind you, SUN are not the only
ones
with that fault. Nowadays I have the same troubles with SGI!

Hello. I've been having a difficult time syncronizing
a switched beowulf network of alpha's running redhat Linux 5.2.
The network is local, except for the master node which is the
gateway to the rest of our network.
I've been able to set the master node time to a timeserver
using "rdate -s timeserver". I'd now like to use the master
node as a timeserver for the other (local, switched network).
The binary "rdate" exists on all the nodes and is in the path
of root. However, when I try "rdate master_node" I get the error
message "rdate: No such file or directory". I don't know what
file the binary is looking for. Does "timed" need to be run
on the master/work nodes (it is not now)?
I've also tried xntpd without much success. I run
xntpd on the master node with an ntp.conf file that has the lines
driftfile /etc/ntp/drift
#multicastclient # listen on default 224.0.1.1
#broadcastdelay 0.008
and on the work nodes the ntp.conf file also has the line
server 10.0.0.10 # local clock
I don't get any errors in the any of the log files which register

This is becoming a major headache because Makefiles and such
are affected using NFS mounted directories.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

The DC120 uses a proprietary comms protocol to control the camera and
an undocumented file format (.kdc). A year or two ago I heard from a
guy who was "working on it", but haven't heard anything since then
so I don't know its status. If you want, contact me by private email
and I'll see if I can still find the guy's address for you.

You'll need XFree86-3.3.3.1. Work fine with that.

Mike, unless things have changed recently there's no free version of the
grap filter. Or any version of grap for Linux rather than Unix.
grap is a pic preprocessor, originally written at Bell Labs by Jon Bentley.
It's no doubt still distributed as part of the commercial Documenter's
Workbench package. (Check the comp.text FAQ for more details; these days
you would buy it from Lucent.)
Several years back a partial reimplementation of grap called `prag' was
written, but I don't believe it was released under GPL. The source code
for prag is available, though.
I'd be interested in seeing a free version of grap written; any takers?
The version of `pic' in my plotutils package (see below), called
`pic2plot', can parse pic input and produce output in numerous modern
graphics formats (PS/EPS, PCL 5, PNM, pseudo-GIF, Illustrator, etc.).
It would be good to have a version of grap to go with it.
