Hmmm, strange.
I've been using wvdial on SuSE 6.2 for ages with no problem.
According to the signal manpage, 10 is a signal used on alpha and sparc to
denote a bus error, but on Linux isn't used...

Subject: Sniffing Serial Port Data?
Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 16:41:00 GMT

I have a Windows application that I run in VMWare. It sends data to the
serial port, and works fine. I want to look at the serial data. Since
VMWare is running on top of Linux, is there anything I can do within
Linux to see the data?

One thought I had was perhaps telling VMWare to use a different device.
Then, in Linux, I could perhaps use a pipe or tee to connect that device
to the real serial device, and be able to get the data out at the same
time. But, I've no idea how to do that.

Any other ideas?

Gerry

Subject: 2.4.0-test and lack of shared memory
Date: 4 Oct 2000 15:21:52 GMT

I've been tinkering with the 2.4.0-test series and end up with shared
memory not being used. For example:

#:free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 126872 98580 28292 0 2732 58756
-/+ buffers/cache: 37092 89780
Swap: 267260 0 267260

Shared is ALWAYS 0. This is making my system VERY slow at times.

Any kernel gurus know what I'm missing in configuring the kernel? Or is
this a new 'feature'?

Thanks.

I have RH6.2 and win98 on same machine. Win98 decided to puke and had
to be reinstalled. It also destroyed the boot sector. I have Partition
Magic and it shows all my linux partitions but I can't access them.
I had a boot disk but it got lost somewhere (because you never use them
with good old stable linux). So, here I am with all my partitions there
and no way to get to all my wonderful data. HELP!
I figure there must be some way to get the data. There are lots of
creative ideas that have come to mind but I need to find someone who

PCI cards are not supposed to step on other cards' IRQs or I/O ports,
and isapnp is for ISA cards, as the name implies. There are some
motherboards that assign IRQs to PCI cards based on the slots they are
inserted into; try plugging the sound card into a different PCI slot.
PCI cards can also share interrupts, so if the other card is also PCI,
there is a strange problem here. It might help if you could post the
exact error message(s) you receive when trying to load the module for
the sound card, as well as the output of "dmesg ; cat /proc/ioports
/proc/interrupts".

Most likely, your boot floppy had a bad sector on it. You can pretty
easily make another one even if you can't boot to Linux; use RAWRITE.EXE
(in the DOSUTILS directory of your distro's first CD) and the disk
images in the IMAGES directory to create a boot disk from DOS. You may
have to boot the system like so from the floppy:

LILO: linux root=/dev/sda3

...until you can make a proper boot disk and install LILO on your hard
drive. (DO THAT! It's faster and more reliable.)

It could be that the win98 sends the passwords encrypted, while your
samba expects the passwords as plain text. Look in the samba
documentation for encrypted passwords.

http://www.toms.net/rb/ has a very nice bootable rescue system
available. You can build it under DOS or Linux, and you really should
keep one of them around. Or, every distro CD should be able to boot an
installed system--if your BIOS can boot from a CD-ROM, try that, and
instead of "Start Installation" in the menu you get after the CD boots,
select "Boot Installed System". You may have to tell the thing which
partition your root filesystem is on, but after that, you can rerun LILO
and be able to boot Linux from the hard drive. HTH,

Add this line to /etc/fstab :
none /var/shm shm exec,dev,suid,rw 0 0

Then "mkdir /var/shm" if it doesn't exist already, and "mount /var/shm".
This is a Feature; everything in Unix is a file, now including the
shared memory system. I forget exactly why they did this, but the
Kernel Traffic page has details on the change if you go back about 3
months.

Subject: Strange printing problem
Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 20:23:19 +0200

I have changed from Suse 6.3 to Debian a few weeks ago, but I was not
able to get my printer to work.

I have a Canon BJC-2000 (on LPT1) . Under Suse (Kernel 2.2.13, printing
and parport support compiled as modules) the printer works fine.

Now I can't even do a
cat samplefile.txt > /dev/lp0
nothing happens

I get NO errormessage like "device not configured". I get this
errormessage when I want to access lp1,lp2, but this is clear because I
have only one printer port.
The device file exist:

crw-rw---- 1 root lp 6, 0 Jul 5 19:44 /dev/lp0
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 6, 1 Jul 5 19:44 /dev/lp1
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 6, 2 Jul 5 19:44 /dev/lp2

When I send strings to lp0 the printer does nothing (this worked under
Suse).
I have loaded the modules correctly:

parport_pc 7560 1 (autoclean)
lp 5476 0 (autoclean)
parport 7456 1 (autoclean) [parport_pc lp]

/var/log/messages tell me that they are loaded correctly to, too:

Oct 4 18:25:10 Meditation kernel: parport0: PC-style at 0x378, irq 7
[SPP,PS2]
Oct 4 18:25:10 Meditation kernel: lp0: using parport0
(interrupt-driven).
What does PS2 at the end of the log mean, is there a conflict with my
PS2 mouse?
But my PS2 port is on IRQ 12.

I have tried with interupts and without ,and with SPP or EPP enabled in
the BIOS.
I although tried different IO-Ports in the Bios: 0x378, 0x3bc.
But nothing happens.

This is really strange.

Hope someone con help me

ciao

Excellent! Having done 1--3, I can now boot Linux from a diskette, and,
I can boot NT.

Is there anything wrong with booting Linux from a diskette? -- if not,
I'd stick with that. In spite of the fact that I've been using Linux
since 1993, you will note from my approach that I'm relatively lazy and
unadventurous towards it!

Another thing. In order to create a boot floppy, I had to read up on it
in Running Linux (Welsh, Dalheimer and Kaufman). That caused me to find
out why all previous attempts failed -- incorrect pointer to Linux root
filesystem; i.e. 'rdev' had to be used. I'd imagine that's a pretty
common mistake.

Many thanks,

Jon C.
