You have to recompile the kernel *without* any soundcard modules, but
*with* soundcard module support.

When recompiling the RH6.0 kernel, edit the Makefile and change
EXTRA_VERSION="-22" to EXTRA_VERSION="", otherwise the sblive
installation script wont work.

Do this change *after* running './configure' and *before* running 'make'.

Subject: How get X (gnome) on 2 screens?
Date: 6 Jul 1999 18:37:11 GMT

I am running a fairly generic installation of RH 6.0 and am using
gnome. I would like to have my system running X (gnome) on
virtual screens 2, 3 and 4 while the other virtual screens
have normal command line logins. I see X starts by "init" calling
"prefdm" but I have found no documentation on "prefdm". X itself
is linked to XWrapper which I also have found no documentation on.

I imagine the XServers file indicates where X is to run and
it has a line refering to ":0". It appears X starts on the first
"unused" virtual screen. I turned off "mingetty" on tty2, tty3,
and tty4 in "inittab" and reset XServers to start on ":0.3" but
it started on virtual screen 2. I also tried multiple entries
in XServers (for ":0.2" and ":0.3") but also just got the one
server on the first unused screen.

Does Linux only support having X on one virtual screen and not allow
one to specify which virtual screen to be used?

Hello everyone! I just installed Linux-Mandrake 6.0 and I have a SupraExpress 56i sp
internal modem configured as Com port 2 IRQ 3 (no pnp setting, jumper-configured, I
disabled COM2 in my bios setup) but it doesn't show under linux at all. I read the
how-to's but can't configure it! Can anyone help me step by step on how to make this
modem run under Linux? Thanks very much!

Periodically I'm running into an issue, where my system stops
responding. It usually happens when I'm quitting Pine 4.10 (my email
client) on my redhat 5.1 machine -- I have Pine set for quit without
prompting. What happens is that pine says that it's closing, but it
never really terminates. I'm at work now so I can't really check
whether my machine is hardlocked, but it's happened before where X
stops responding as well. I cannot do ctrl-alt-backspace to end X, I
cannot switch to a virtual terminal. I basically have to power down.
Now the situation I notice from work is that I use SSH to remotely
connect and I get a login prompt, and I can put in my user name and
password, but it will not authenticate me. The other time I had this
issue, I noticed that I could open a new Xterm, and when I tried to su,
I put in the password, but it wouldn't go any further. Shortly
afterwards X then stopped responding. So SSH is still working on port
22, but authentication seems to be broken. This is really starting to
cause some problems, but I've not yet seen any errors to indicate what
might be happening. I'd appreciate any clues as to what might be
causing this problem.

thanks,
Brian Seppanen

I have got a strange problem with bash and RedHat 6.0. I have installed
bash-1.14.7-16 (default with RedHat 6.0).

In my .bash_profile I got a line:
    set -o vi

But after I logon, bash will not accept any vi commands. (previous/next etc)
Even when I give the command "set -o vi" after the prompt bash is not
working correct.

After I start a new bash at the prompt and give the command "set -o vi" it
will accept vi commands.

Anyone knows the problem and solution?

Thanx in advance!

Hello,

Is it possible to have a DHCP server provide everything a linux system
requires (ie. hostname, ip number, gateways, dns servers) so that it
could be cloned using a product such as Ghost?

Is there anything likely to go wrong? We have 65 identical spec'd
computers and I would like to install Redhat 6 on all of them. If I
have to them individually I won't bother.

how about security! - if someone has access to sensitive

Hi all,

I have this interesting issue that is occuring here.

First let me say that the Linux box has two printers that it sees, one
directly on it's printer port (named dj690) and one with an IP
address. Both print fine. Now on to the problem.

I telnet to a Solaris machine and would like to print files from that
machine to the printer attached to the Linux box. The printer is
named in the printers.conf file on the Solaris box. However when I
try a lpr -Pdj690 test.ps I get the following error..

error transferring print job xxx
check queue for ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

where my.local.system.net is the name of my linux box...

Any clues as to how to fix this?

Thanks.

Maybe you guys should let go of your knee-jerk prejudices WRT the
intelligence and attitudes of U.S. posters, and try to think more
carefully about what you read before reacting to it.

Quite obviously the original comment meant that it wasn't a _world_
war until the U.S. declared war on Japan and Germany declared war on the
U.S. Before that, it was mainly a European war.

See if you have ppp-off on your system and use it in a shell.

ppp-on works well also, if you want a connection outside x.

I cannot print to my local Epson Stylus Color II printer. It worked fine
under RH5.2. When I upgraded to RH6.0 Hedwig (Cheapbytes CD) there was no
printer setup so I assumed it would use the existing printer configurations
- but it didn't. I tried using the "Printer Configuration Tool" in the
control-panel but I get a "Samba does not appear to be installed. ..." and
then "ncpfs does not appear to be installed. ..." Since I only have my PC
connected to a local printer I have not had to install these packages
before. What's going on?

Also, what happened to my fvwm window manager. I have now been switched to
Gnome, which is very nice but slows down the graphics capability of my
older P90 without any graphics accelerators.

Thanks.

Even though the Libraries are on the disk, that doesn't mean the compiler
can find them. Make sure that all the paths to the libraries are in the
/etc/ld.so.conf file, then as root run ldconfig. I don't think it would
hurt to put all your library paths in the /etc/profile in the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH either. I did both of these things and have had damned few
problems with failed dependencies in the past 2-3 years.

On the cooledit thing, if you are having trouble in the cooledit.o then you
need to go into the cooledit.c file and see what errors are referring to.
It's an easy bet that it can't find another library. I built cooledit
no-problem and it's a neat little editor.

good luck
