perhaps the problem is really that, in english, there are no rules for
pronouncing <full-stop>

> An 'i' can be soft ('ih') or hard ('eye') sounding. Not 'EE'.

sure it can. the name lisa for example. a whole truckload of words
ending in -ia. mania, lusitania, austria.

> I've always pronounced it with a soft 'i', resulting in 'lih-nooks'.

well, i've always pronounced it like linus does on his audio
sound-byte so there.

only for swedish-speaking finish values of norwegian. you realize
that saying he's norwegian is kind of like saying a francophone
quebecer is a yankee.

> As the saying goes; "You say 'to-may-toe', I say 'to-mah-toe'..."

and being a canuck, you probably say aboot when you mean about ;-)

I just setup my 3dfx card in Linux. I have a small problem.

I downloaded the glide control program, and it`s saving the profile
where it should, but the problem is that no matter what I choose for the
settings, GLQuake is still dark, and I mean pitch black, all you can see
are explosions and the text on startup.

I`ve tried various options and can`t think of anything else, so if I can
help PLEASE HELP!

Subject: custom kernel hangs at "configuring modules" during floppy bootup
Date: Wed, 07 Jul 1999 22:41:13 GMT

Hi all,

I compiled a 2.2.5-15 custom kernel onto a floppy with 'make zdisk'.
Now, since this is the same kernel that came with the distribution
(RH6.0), I assume there is no need to rebuild the modules, or to mess
around with the System.map file. Or is there? --Thanks.

My poor brain (of course it cant be compared with yours) comes to the
connclusion because somebody here propably did the same I need because
he/she downloaded RedHat LINUX and created his/him own CD.
If I had Linux running here you could be sure I did not ask anything.

I did a fresh install of MDK 6.0
Installed the sox and esound RPM updates
ran sndconfig
all worked fine.

Then I did another install and trimmed out some seemingly unrelated
daemons and it bombed

I did another custom/"everything" install and all was OK again

You didn't really want to go there...less than 5% of the US population
are farmers. Out of a population of roughly 270 million, 5% works out
to just under 14 million. India and China must have several times that
number.

Ed,
I'm hoping you have the answer by now. I had problems in 5.2 and now in 6.0.
My display is 1/2" larger than the monitor. When I use "xvidtune" I can get
the corrected numbers, but where do they go?
Actually it is " /usr/X11R6/bin/xvidtune" Exactly. I don't think there is
any "Xvidtune". It works, but like I said, I dont know what makes it
permanent. I'm running GNOME. I like it and it was the first thing that came
up.

Actually, in Windoze you can access file and directory names containing
whitespace from a command prompt within a DOS window. You just need to
put the filespec in quotes. (Such as "C:\My Documents" in this case.)

Whenever I've wanted to make changes with Xvidtune and have them
stick, I do it by running XF86Setup (as root), clicking done, then
clicking the "Run Xvidtune" button that comes up, then make my
changes, then once I'm done, I quit out of Xvidtune, and click the
Save Changes button. You can do this either from the command line, or
in X.
