I am adding and IP address to the masq file in /etc/rc.d/init.d/in order
to allow that machine to access the web thru our network. After adding
the IP address access to the net is still denied. Any ideas why and how
to correct? Thanks.

Hello,
Solaris can handle a Double Long Word of users and while that is
platform independant, it is a large number nonetheless (a lot more than
500,000 or even 5,000,000 users) the limitation is a BSD and Linux
limitation and not really a big problem because if you have that many users,
you should invest in another machine for them anyhow.

On this note, Communigate Pro is one of the best MTA's that I have seen, it
could run that many users (it does not use OS accounts and therefore the
system limit is not an issue.) and it comes with an LDAP server built in
that can also be configured to proxy to a main LDAP environment. Also the
scalability is there because it includes the ability to cluster (of course
you have to pay for it.)

Check out Hard Hat Linux:
  http://www.mvista.com/

You also might want to see EDN magazine. They had a special issue
on Linux and embedded systems:
  http://www.ednmag.com/

Don't know if these will address the issue you raised; but they
should be a start.

That's a pretty brazen statement "most reliable OS in embedded field",
and therefore suspect. This sounds like vendor's propaganda. Any OS
requires applications to be usable, and overall reliability can be no
better than the weakest link. Personally, I prefer the term robust.

What if you run '/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart' after editing
'/etc/sysconfig/network'?

Note: '/etc/sysconfig/network' is sourced by the above rc-file:
  if [ ! -f /etc/sysconfig/network ]; then
...
  echo "Usage: network {start|stop|restart|reload|status|probe}"

Hello,

I use an ADi MicroScan 6P Monitor, and a Microtek ScanMaker E3. The monitor
has been brightness/contrast (black-point/white-point) calibrated as per the
procedures given here:

http://www.aim-dtp.net/aim/index.htm

In answer to your question (reply):

The problem is not with my scanner, it is with my printer. The scanned input -
on screen - of the printed page from my inkjet printer looks very, very much
(almost exactly) like the printed page itself.

I have found a new "control image." I have also printed it out, and scanned it
back in. Perhaps these are better examples:

Set #3:

3A.) Source Graphic (Control Image):
     http://www.netdotcom.com/kadams/photo/screen-color-mix.gif

3B.) Printed Graphic (Scanned Image):
     http://www.netdotcom.com/kadams/photo/screen-color-mix-print.gif

Adjust your monitor so the Red, Green, and Blue areas in the Source Graphic
actually look red, green, and blue.

Then take a look at the Printed Graphic. Notice how the Red area actually
looks orange. The Green area appears a dark green, and the Blue area is a dark
blue. If I take the Source Graphic and print it, that is what it looks like...

I want to make the output from my printer match, as closely as possible, the
Source Graphic.

What is the cause? Too much yellow? Too much black? Not enough Magenta?
Etc...?

Thank You and Best Regards,
Kevin Adams

I can't get umask to work correctly on my RedHat
7.0 system. It's on an ext2 filesystem.

I enter the command umask 000. This should allow
me to create files with default permissions of
777, right? Well it doesn't; I get new files
with default permissions of 666.

What am I missing? Thanks.

The same as for every other user not having '.' in their $PATH:
Security risk. Read section 2.13 of the Unix FAQ at

big
problems trying to get it work. My computer has two network cards 3com
3c509x on eth0 and linksys (tulip.o ) on eth1. I tried to probe the card
with modprobe tulip.o and i get device or resource busy error. I tried to
compile the new tulip.c file (v 0.92) for scyld.com with the necessary
pciscan.c and other files now the error is very big and starts with " In
file included from /usr/include/linux/string.h:37 from tulip.c:143 /usr
include/asm/string.h:39:parse error before `size_t`". Then the error goes
for close to two pages. I did download the files under linux.
I would really appreciate any help provided

Hi,
I hve some problems with the automount. I'm using the actual 2.2.17
kernel (but had same problem with older kernels too) and the actual
utilities. I use this tool for mounting home directories from an NFS
server per user sub driectory (so I have several hundred mounts and
umounts a day).
Some times the aoutmount does not umount all directories, so some of
them left in the end of day. I umount them manually (script) and then
try to restart automount. But often some old mount entries seems to
hang, even if the are not visible:

s11:/home/users # ls
ls: s194688: No such file or directory
. ..

This prefents autofs to restart correctly :-(

Any ideas?

So long,
