Ok, this seems to work. I used to have it in my own user account under the
setiathome directory, but I couldn't make it work under the subdirectory.
After creating a user account (seti) and placing all files in it's home
directory - all goes well. :>
Just one question;
What's this do:
2>&1
?? After the /dev/null redirection, I thought I was just to put a '&' to
start the program in the background.

Which linux applications won't it work with?
I believe I have sound working with that sound card in one
computer, but I get confused about the designations of the
cards.
The versions of realplayer that are available (without a
lot of special efforts) no longer work under RH6.0. They
either core dump or produce error messages.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I am new to linux. I am trying to print from my HP laser jet6i after
installing RH 6.0 but there is no printout. The light in the printer is
blinking. Since I installed RH 6.0 in the machine which Window98 is
already installed this may cause a problem while sharing the printer.
I used "printtool" and checked the pre-configuration. It was following:
Edit Local Printer Entry
Names: lp
Spool Directory: /var/spool/lpd/lp
File Limit in kb : 0
Printer Device: /dev/lp0
Input Filter : select: *auto* HP LajerPrint
I don't know what is wrong. When I test with the test command there's no
printout.
My second question is about Modem. Since I bought HP pavillion 6460
there is a HCF modem which is not compatible with Linux ( I was my fault
for didn't check it out before) I can't connect to school network.
Yesterday I bought another modem which says it supports linux but it is
not working either. I am wondering whether this modem is not compatible
with this machine. Is it possible to happen this? If this is the case
how can I get a new modem and make it connected to network? I am
worrying about a possibility that even if I bought a modem which can be
supported by linux it may not work with my other hardware. I am trying
to order AOpen's FM56-ITU/2. I spent almost three days to figure out
but it seems that I am on the verge of giving up using linux and go back
to this darn window98.
I will appreciate any advice.

By default, cron runs the commands in /etc/crontab which then runs the
commands
in /etc/cron.* where * refers to hourly, daily, weekly, etc. These are
usually run
at specified times in the middle of the night. You can tell when by looking
at
/etc/crontab. The updating under RH6.0 is done by the program slocate.cron
which is in the directory /etc/cron.daily. If your machine is not running
when
the specified time comes, the command will not be run. Also, shutting off your
machine while the command is running can cause problems.
updatedb is a link to slocate.
You should not run updatebd separately by putting an entry in roots crontab.
In fact, generally if you want root to run some cron job, it would be best to
put an entry in /etc/crontab or perhaps put a shell script in the appropriate
cron.* directory.
Even with things appropriately arranged, updatedb can get out of control.
This was always happening with our Suns. If something was not where it
was supposed to be, updatedb would continue to run and would have to be
killed or the machine would have to be rebooted. Look carefully at the
slocate shell script and make sure it only looks at directories which will
be available when it is being run. Also, leave out directories you don't
really need to look it.

And after mounting, you can not only read from the file system,
but (as root) you can write to it.

This seems quite puzzling. The first thought that comes to mind is that
there is some permission problem on the file /etc/passwd and/or if
you are using shadow passwords, the file /etc/shadow. For the former
the permissions should be
-rw-r--r--
and for the latter they should be
-r--------
Another possible explanation is that for
some reason the passwords you are giving are not what you think they
are. Try creating a user without a password and see if you can login
as that user. If the interface for adding a user won't let you do that,
enter any password and then edit the /etc/password file so the password
field is blank for that user. If you are using shadow passwords, the
password will be found instead in /etc/shadow, but you will have
to change the permissions on that file to edit it. (Remember to
change them back when you are done.)
You should also be aware that for some reason some passwords
are difficult to type correctly so the system recognizes them. Try
relatively straightforward passwords first. Of course when you
have resolved the problem make sure your passwords are sufficiently
complicated so they are secure. And don't use empy passwords
if you are ever going to be connected to the internet.
I hope someone has some other ideas because I don't believe I
have ever seen this.

In this case the & is not being used to run the program in the background.
Instead it is saying to direct both Standard Output and Standard Error to
/dev/null
It would be about the same (but longer) as:
command >/dev/null 2>/dev/null
If I am not mistaken....

I have two NIC's in my linux machine (one is 10base the other
100base). I'm trying to set it up so that I don't have to use 2 NIC's
on another machine (Windows 98/2000). I've been messing with routing
in netconf and here is the best I could get:
I can ping both NICs on the linux machine, but nothing else on the
10 base side (ie, the internet)
Here is my system information
Linux:
Mandrake 6.0
10base
IP 209.163.146.42
GW 209.163.146.1
NM 255.255.254.0
100base
IP 100.100.100.100
NM 255.255.255.0
I'm trying to set the 100base's GW to 209.163.146.42 and have it
forward to 209.163.146.1
Any information on what to use for this would be helpful.

Not sure... I rather sure I had seen a find listed in the top output,
but maybe there also was a locate which I didn't care about because I
didn't know it.

Maybe it's because I only have my box up when I'm at home working at it.

Subject: Memory not found past 64MB (AMD K6-3, AGP Video, M598 Super Socket 7)
Date: Sun, 11 Jul 1999 19:49:50 GMT
Just got a new computer, and having some issues. The specs are:
AMD K6-3 @ 450Mhz
128MB PC100 RAM (I have another 64M stick I put in at one time too.)
M598 Super Socket 7 Motherboard, with builtin SiS AGP 5595 Video. (8M of RAM)
Winbond w89c840 ethernet card
I first installed RH 6.0, which comes with the 2.2.5-15 kernel.
I also tried the latest 2.2.10 kernel.
The problem is that, while the BIOS seems to detect the memory just fine,
top never shows more than 64M being available. This remains the same,
whether or not I have just the 128MB RAM stick in, or both the 128 and the 64M
stick in.
I tried forcing the kernel to use 192 (with both sticks in) using a lilo.conf
that looks like this:
[greear@grok greear]$ more /etc/lilo.conf
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.5-15
label=orig
root=/dev/hda1
read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.10
label=dev
root=/dev/hda1
append="mem=192M"
read-only
[greear@grok greear]$
When I tried booting the 'dev' kernel with these options, I got a kernel dump
that completely froze the system (had to power cycle). If that printout would
be useful to anyone, I can copy it by hand and mail it to you...
I know the video is not supported by X yet, so I've been just using the text console,
or exporting the display back to another machine. However, I'm wondering if the
kernel is confused about which part of the RAM that the AGP card is taking?
So, does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Ben

UPDATE: After posting this, I took a long look at the BIOS, and it looks like it
takes the 8MB for the AGP video out for me. So, I went back in used
mem=120 for the lilo option (ie 128 - 8 for the video ==> 120).
top shows 120MB now, and things seem to be working fine!!

I have a SIIG SCSI card, with a INITIO chipset. I have viewed both
companys web pages
and initio has a driver for pre 2.0.35 kernels, but no driver for the
2.2.x kernel. If there is anyone
that could be of any help, please email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or

Thank you

Arrgh!
I'm finding that from time to time there is mail delivered to my
linux server, but that never makes it into my spoolfile.
I see entries for messages supposedly successfully delivered to me in
/var/log/maillog, but they don't exist in my spoolfile (or pine, or
Eudora downloading mail from the machine).
I'm not sure, but it seems to only happen when I get more than 900 or
so messages stored.
Any suggestions as to what the problem might be? Most frustrating.
MkLinux DR3 with GENERIC 7 kernel on a PowerMac 6100.
Thanks,
