Unfortunately the only way to be sure that you have a clean system is to
repartition and reinstall.
Also visit Red Hat's website and check for security updates for RH 6.2.
http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/rh62-errata-security.html
You should visit: http://www.linuxsecurity.com for some tips on how to
secure your box.

I have always found XEmacs to be an easy compile for Linux/Unix and
always compile from source.

The uugetty trailing options order is important.
I used to use ~/sbin/uugetty ttyS1 9600 vt100
If not in that order, respawning would occur.

2.2.* kernels do not work with the (never-released) gcc-2.96 shipped by Red
Hat. Reportedly they want you to use an older one, which they call "kgcc".

"man gcc" is likely to provide beneficial information; if you have
Emacs around, or Info, you might look for GCC documentation there,
which will very likely provide relevant information.

For better or worse, the GCC options do not appear to include anything
targeting AMD features specifically. (For a possible exception to
this, see <http://www.amd.com/news/corppr/20152.html>; not relevant
just yet...)
<http://gcc.gnu.org/news.html> indicates that:
September 2, 1999
Richard Henderson has finished merging the ia32 backend rewrite
into the mainline GCC sources. The rewrite is designed to improve
optimization opportunities for the Pentium II target, but also
provides a cleaner way to optimize for the Pentium III, AMD-K7
and other high end ia32 targets as they appear.
But note that phrase "as they appear." K7 has not appeared as a
visible "target" the way that, for instance, the Pentium Pro is a
"visible target."
[You can't buy Pentium Pro hardware new these days, which suggests
that the importance of the difference is a bit dubious...]
The only way I'd think it of _great_ importance to care about this
would be if it became "standard practice" to, instead of downloading
prepackaged binary updates, download source code patches, and compile
and install them locally. The BSD "Ports" system does provide that
sort of functionality, and one might look at "Source RPMs" or at
"Source .debs" to allow this; it's not something commonly done.

Personally, I use a cron job that updates .signature periodically (as
well as setting up some MH message templates); this isn't something
that forcibly needs to be managed inside the news client. (After all,
you wouldn't want to wind up with something bloated like, oh, um,
Emacs^H^H^H^H^HNetscape, would you?)

If you do, don't make the mistake I did: With RH 6.1, you didn't need
disk 2 to install/upgrade. With 7.0 you do.
I only downloaded and burned disk 1 at first, and hosed myself.
Fortunately, I wasn't so stupid as to not make a backup just before I

Hi all,
I have been thrust into the world of Linux!
I have installed BIND 8.2.2 on my Red Hat 6.2 install.
I need to find a step by step guide in order to set-up the machine to act as

You've got several choices. If you're running Perl 5, replace your regexp
with
(http:.*?)"
to specify minimal matching.
An alternative to that is to use
(http:[^"]+)"
to specify "http:, followed by one or more occurences of anything except a
", followed by a quote".

It serves no purpose if you have a small drive.
If you have a bigger drive like mine then you can play games.
As you see I have several swap partitions
The basic idea to have several partitions is that if you want a clean install
it is much easier as you don't have to wipe out all your apps. If you only use
RPM you can still be slave of the system but if you install tars or compile your
own without RPM this becomes an attractive idea to put all your apps on
/usr/local
There are lotsa ways to split the partitions but I don't think it is very usefull
if the drive is tiny like yours.
/dev/hda1 /win98 vfat noauto,user 0 2
/dev/hdf1 /fat1 vfat noauto,user 0 2
/dev/hde5 swap swap defaults 0 2
/dev/hde6 swap swap defaults 0 2
/dev/hde7 swap swap defaults 0 2
/dev/hde8 swap swap defaults 0 2
