I can say that Linux can live with EZ-Drive. I have 2 systems which
have large disks that came with EZ-Drive software. When I installed
the new disk on the first machine, I repartitioned it with the software
that came with the disk (which installed EZ drive). Apparently EZ Drive
installs the remapping software in the boot sector, and moves the boot
loader and partition table to the second sector. When booting Linux,
it recognizes this and indicates in the boot messages. It then uses
the relocated partition table, and apparently installs lilo in the
relocated sector. (However, this does result in the logical addresses
being "scrambled" to the point that if EZ Drive is not installed,
nothing makes "sense", and the drive is not recognized.) In order
to boot from diskette, you have to let the EZ Drive load from the disk
first, and then you can interrupt the booting to switch to the floppy.
Nonetheless, I've had trouble booting from floppy...
On my other system, I never could get EZ Drive to install (would have
been helpful, as the motherboard would not accept greater than 1024
cylinders). So I ended up just using Win98 and Linux without EZ
Drive. (Win 95 wouldn't install.) Linux shows the bios parameters,
but you can reset them on the "expert" menu, to utilize the
higher cylinders.

I once had such an incident and solved it by going into CMOS and shutting
off any BIOS shadowing. This may not solve the problem, but it may.

Speaking of user interface - just choose the one you like best out of 10
to 15 alternatives (KDE, Gnome, AfterStep, twm, ...).
IPC is also there, so...

Are you trying to run crond yourself, or just using crontab to instantiate

Another question may be "What is hanging updated?". Have you yanked any

Subject: HELP! - Strange message when running preinst.sh, for installing Xfree86
3.3.3.1
Date: Sun, 11 Jul 1999 13:18:13 GMT
Hi guys,
Hopefully any of you has some idea about what I could do to get rid of a
really sickening error message I get when trying to install the version
3.3.3.1 of the XFree86. (BTW - I am trying to do that because I am
having a video card supported just in the new release of XFree86).
Well, I am running the preinst.sh script, yet, I get a message saying
that it looks like I am using glibc, and I should check whether I use
"the right Linux-ix386-glibc dist". It is correct, I am using glibc,
since I am running Red Hat Linux 6.0, yet, the preinst.sh, and all the
rest of files needed for the upgrade of the X are the right ones - for
glibc.
As well, the error message continues with stuff like:
"integer expression expected before -gt
integer expression expected before -gt
"integer expression expected before -ge"
As well I should make sure that I have an ld.so higher than ver. 1.7.4.
WELL, ALL IS FINE ! I do respect all that. I do have the latest ld.so
(coming with the OS) - I really double-checked it, and the proper
upgrade files. So, what's the matter ?
Can anybody help ?
Please send me your ideas.
Thank you very much.

I am not sure what "regenerated" means, but sometimes files have to
exist before the actual logging is done. So you should "touch" all
relevant logfiles (check permissions!).
And perhaps you have to restart syslogd, apache etc. because they are
still writing to the non-existent files.

LILO and lilo are oblivious to EZ-Drive. The Linux kernel has had a
workaround in it for EZ-Drive since early in 1.3.xx.
The workaround in the kernel fools lilo into working correctly on an
EZ-Drive infected hard drive, and LILO is oblivious to the whole mess.
So you can use EZ-Drive if you need it for other things, such as an old BIOS
or if you installed Linux before learning about LBA and made your first
partition more than 1024 cylinders. EZ-Drive won't get in the way,
but you usually won't need it either.

If by invasion you're talking about the German invasion in 1941 you have to
go back farther than that. 20 years (or more) before this Russia was "bled
dry" by the likes of Lenin and the bunch in charge when they forcibly took
grain from places like the Ukraine and sold it. Russia was exporting grain
(if I remember correctly) while people were starving to death. They bled
themselves dry and were already in a much weakened state by the time the
Germans invaded (particularly since by then Stalin had killed most of his
experienced generals; their army was essentially leaderless).

You can take a look at the following area on Red Hat's site:

Specifically, look at the PPP Client Tips section, which includes

After upgrading my work computer from RH 5.2 to 6.0 I feel that the

partitions from a SGI server and the Linux box is running AMD, KNFSD and
NIS. I am also using KDE 1.1.1. In "/var/log/messages" I find a few of
these:
Jul 15 12:29:34 ojt amd[515]: jupiter:/jupiter/home2 referenced fstype

but I do not know if it is the source of the problem. I'm also using
StarOffice 5.1 and it is really slow compared to StarOffice 5.0. I have
compared them on the same system as SO 5.0 doesn't run on RedHat 6.0.
Do anybody have any of these problems and maybe a fix????
Please email as well as post to the NG.

This fellow seems convinced BBnPlanet and the Nuie Registry are not going
to bother him any. Please ask [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] what
is going on.

Glitch - the reason is that news servers aren't always bang up to date.
People on slower servers will not see that replies have been written,
and write their own.
Mark.

Subject: Can't telnet to localhost
Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 10:27:57 GMT
Hi,
All of a sudden, I can't telnet to localhost on my RedHat 5.2 system.
When I try to telnet to localhost or 127.0.0.1, I get this:
[root@localhost network-scripts]# telnet 127.0.0.1
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Network is unreachable
[root@localhost network-scripts]# telnet localhost
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Network is unreachable
However, after dialing in to my ISP with ifup ppp0 -dial. and THEN trying
to telnet to localhost, instead of getting my own machine, I get some
machine in my ISP's network!
I must have broken something, but I don't know what. It was working
perfectly before.
The details:
[root@localhost network-scripts]# more /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
[root@localhost network-scripts]# more ifup-lo
DEVICE=lo
IPADDR=127.0.0.1
NETMASK=255.0.0.0
NETWORK=127.0.0.0
BROADCAST=127.255.255.255
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=none
When I'm dialed in to my ISP:
[root@localhost network-scripts]# netstat -rn
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface
10.65.70.12 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 1006 0 0 ppp0
0.0.0.0 10.65.70.12 0.0.0.0 UG 1006 0 0 ppp0
When I'm not dialed into my ISP, the routing table is empty.
When I try to add 127.0.0.1 to the routing table:
[root@localhost /root]# route add 127.0.0.1
SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable
Does anyone know what the problem is and how I could fix this?
Thanks,
Dan
