This isn't a lilo problem, it's a BIOS problem. Others make believe they
don't get bitten by it by silently installing the OS first, i.e., before
the limit.

This patch depends on a feature not al BIOSes have.

Subject: RH-6.0 lesstif RPM fails to install libXm.so & libMrm.so
Date: 15 Jul 1999 23:07:00 GMT
I recently upgraded three machines to RH-6.0. Only one of them, the NFS
server, recieved all the lesstif RPMs, that is, the base plus the two
development; the other two machines only recieved the lesstif-0.88.0 RPM.
Since RH-6.0 has a new glibc, I decided it would be a good time to rebuild
xmgrace, on the server machine. After the rebuild, it worked on the other
two machines, so I figured all was well.
Recently, I built RPMs for lesstif-0.88.9 using the RedHat spec. I modified
it slightly to use an older version of libtool, and thus produce shared
objects that were of the form lib__.so.x.x rather than lib__.so.x.0.x.
Anyway, after I built them and installed them on one client machine I
noticed that four files that should have been installed (they appear for
'rpm -qpil ...'),
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXm.so.2
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXm.so.2.0
/usr/X11R6/lib/libMrm.so.2
/usr/X11R6/lib/libMrm.so.2.0
weren't there. In fact, I checked the other client machine prior to
installing the RPM I built, and they also weren't there. IE, the RH-built
RPM apparently failed to install these shared objects.
Then I thought, why is xmgrace running? Well, after a hasty rebuild of it
I noticed it was statically linking to libXm.a; after linking libXm.so to
libXm.so.2.0, and running ldconfig, dynamic link was formed.
So I have two problems, am I the only one?
1) the RH lesstiff-0.88.0 RPM fails to install shared objects on my
machine
2) the RH 2.0-devel RPM doesn't create libXm.so and libMrm.so links, so
the compiler thinks I only have the archive object.
Any hopes for a fix?

If they're not a commercial entity, then it would make a whole lot more
sense to be <http://www.linuxppc.org> or <http://www.linuxppc.net>,
rather than <http://www.linuxppc.com>.
They sell CDs, and make money doing it, ergo they are a "commercial"
organization. I don't know if they're incorporated; if they are, I
seriously doubt that they are arranged as a not-for-profit corporation,
which would be necessary in order to not be considered a "commercial
company."

I searched deja for answers on this issue, but couldn't find any,
perhaps i missed it....?
I recently Redhat 5.2 upgraded to 6.0
Now HP Deskjet 660C (postscript capable) is unable to print.
I only have one printer port on my home pc.
This simple function shouldn't break when upgrading...this worked
without any problems in Redhat 5.2.
Using printtool in control-panel i ensured that device is /dev/lp0
( my understanding is this is a change from rh5.2 which was lp1)
also ps ax shows lpd is running
All I get when printing are blank pages.
Any assistance appreciated to get HP660C back online..

Subject: RH install fails during HDD format

Hello all-
I am trying to install rh6.0 onto a slightly older intel machine. I
have tried 3 hdd in the install but they all fail when install is
creating the file system on the HD. The last HDD I used (and failed)
was a 3 gig western digital. However I put that dirve into the current
system I am using now and I was able to install without a problem. The
installation hang occurs specifically during the "writting inodes table
xx/xxx".
I can still move around to the different screens but even after 20
minutes the install does not resume. Also I have tested all the HD's for
bad blocks or sectors but they are all fine.
I don't know much about the hardware in the machine that does not work
but here is what I was able to find out,
motherboard is Hot557 v1.5 made by Spacewalker.
the chipset is intel i430vx. I think the board was made back in 96.
I have a pentium 133 in there and 16 meg of memory. There is also a 36x
max cd.
I have exhausted all information resources I know. Any help is greatly
appreciated.

Up there at the top. At least respect the intelligence
of others enough to *delete* these things before denying them.
Unless you are talking about magical engineering efforts
which incurred no costs, it is ludicrous to claim clones
cheaper because they didn't pay for their own engineering.
Clone companies jumped at the opportunity to develop new
advanced hardware for their machines. I was particularly
fond of the sudden burst of parallelism we saw in DayStar's
MP 604 machines.
Hey, speaking of Apple-Be relations, you _are_ aware that
the BeBox was dropped (and PowerMac embraced) partially
because of the existence of adequate parallel PowerMac
hardware, yes? Be figured, why make a competing platform
when the tech is already out there? Be had already fallen
prey to Apple's moves long before any G3 confusion.
The move to Intel means a world where makers of quad-CPU
machines aren't quashed. I like the PowerPC architecture,
but I don't want an environment where hardware advancements
are not permitted to exceed those of one slow company.
The MacIntosh was born out of love for technology; its
subsequent religion seems opposed to it.

Howdy,
I am installing Debian GNU/Linux on a fairly new machine. It
has a 6 gig hard drive which I partitioned into 1 gig for the
system directory, and 2 gig for the user directory, etc, etc.
When I was partitioning the hard drive, I did a bad sector check
and that hung the system a couple of times. I finally got it
to work and it found several bad sectors. I thought at that
point I was home free. However, the Debian install program
froze, and I wasn't able to install the system. Now, when
I try to run dselect, I keep getting general protection
errors and I can't get the install to complete.
Any ideas on what I can do (if anything?)
Thanks,
Matt

Don't really know since I have not used it.

The names of at least half the cities in Europe are pronounced very
differently by English speakers than by their inhabitants. Are you
saying this is wrong? OF COURSE NAMES ARE PRONOUNCED DIFFERENTLY BY
SPEAKERS OF DIFFERENT LANGUAGES!!! Personally I think pronouncing
"Linux" to rhyme with with the name "Linus" makes the most sense and
sounds most natural in English. Rhyming it with "cynics" is OK too I
guess, although it really doesn't sound right to me. But affecting a
Swedish accent and saying "Lee-nooks" is just ridiculous, even if
that's the way Linus says it himself. Linus can get away with it
because he really does have an accent, but I would feel completely
silly introducing Linux to someone and having to pronounce it that
way.

Hi there,
I am running Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 and I recently installed Word Perfect
8, and the HTML editor Amaya. In both of these programs, all graphics
look horrible, being reduced to a series of pinkish or greyish set of
vertical lines. Do I need some package to have them work properly (I
downloaded Amaya through dselect, and there was no dependency problem).
I have also a graphical annoyance when using Netscape since the button
graphics appears monochrome (although the web page renderings are
faultless). Any reason for this.
Thanks in advance for your help:
