I'll check it out. My problem is I want to do my usual Mac stuff with MS
Word, and do development under Linux. On the same machine.
I've just discovered that some pretty good Linux's are available for Macs.
And I would not have to upgrade to the G3 I'd need for OS X, or buy a
Linux PC.
Plus it would let me boot Linux off of one HD, and Mac OS off another.
Thanks again,
Jim

Erp...I checked it out and am sorry I didn't make clear I'm currently a
Mac/Unix guy thinking about dumping my Mac for Linux (the Unix is our
supercomputer, which I am not allowed to take home).
Anyway, VMWare looks great for someone like me in Windows who needs Linux
too. But to me, anything related to Windows is as alien and welcome as
eating rocks. Not to say that some rocks don't taste good, it's just not
me, ya know...

Not always. The CodeWright programmer's editor, for example, defaults
to C:\CW32

Usually into /usr/bin and /usr/bin/man (for the documentation). You can
search for a program using
find / -name programname
and thus know for sure where it was installed. But you can install
them anywhere you want, as long as you have permission, and as long
as they are in tarballs, not rpms. Or so I surmise.

1) Gnome starts automatically with the file manager (which I never use)
and with xmms. I specified my own programs to start in control panel,
like a trustworthy person. They do start, but where do the first two
come from?
2) xv keeps drifting. Under RH6.2, a coomand like xv files*.ppm (with
all files of the exact same size) would display all images in the same
window. Now it keeps shifting.
3) I wrote a cd and I tried to read it. First, the mount command never
completed. I assume the system was trying to talk to the cdrom drive,
but an answer never came. I had to reboot. After reboot, at the console
(before startx) I mounted the cd again. It did mount, I did copy some
data to the disk, but sudenly
hdd: cdrom_decode_status: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdd: cdrom_decode_status: error=0xb4
hdd: cdrom_decode_status: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdd: cdrom_decode_status: error=0xb4
Then I tried to unmount it and the system said it was not mounted.
What's up with this?
Someone, please help! RedHat 7.0, stock kernel (2.2.16).

If it replies with the name of a file, see whether your system contains

I did not know there was a bzlilo option, I usually use bzImage. Why did
you move the System.map and vmliuz files to boot? They should already
have been there.

When I installed RH7.0 it installed both XF4.0 (which comes with ati_drv.o)
and the 3.3.6 driver for my card (XFree86-Mach64-3.3.6). You guessed, I have
an ATI card (Rage Pro). It was pretty hot a couple of years ago, but now
probably costs about $30 at pricewatch.com. Just 8 meg of memory, but it's
more than enough for me.
I think by default RH7.0 runs XF-3.3.6. I read somewhere (but can't remember
where, probably in some RH specific documents) what you need to do to make it
run X-4.0. In /etc/X11 there is a link X->../../usr/X11R6/XFree86-whatever.
This must be the 3.3.6 version. Change the link to
../../usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86. This is X-4.0. The configuration file it uses is
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4. If you make changes in this file you'll see them take
effect. If you want to stick to 3.3.6, make the changes in the usual
XF86Config. So you should not have to downgrade to RH6.2. X-3.3.6 is already
there (or you can install it from the RH7.0 cd).
Overall, I think RH7.0 is not quite ready yet. Hopefully 7.2 will be better.

Right, sorry, more details...
I'm using a Toshiba Tecra 730CDT, which has a built in pointer, which is
basically broken (but recognized during setup)...I have an external
serial mouse (COM 01, IRQ 04)...I just recently setup SuSE 7.0 which
works great except I cannot, for the life of me figure out how to get
the serial mouse recognized. I've tried setting this up in YaST and SaX
with no luck. I got close in SaX, I think, but when I rebooted my
system, well, I could not reboot my system after saving my changes
(perhaps I saved them in the wrong location? I used the default of
/etc/* under Selection it said /etc/XF86 Config)...If it's not obvious,
I have no idea what I'm doing.
Thanks for any advice,

In your opinion, of course. Others, like myself, have a contrary view.
I find SO equal to or exceeding the power of MS Word. With Bill's greed
reachig new bounds of impropriaty, more and more people may come to
apprecieate SO. And, when the OpenOffice.org project gets rolling I expect we
will see nifty "unbloated" wp, spreadsheets, etc. from that group.

I recently designed and created a table, data entry form, query, and and a
couple of reports. Easy. Nothing like that ability in MS unless you want to
add Access to the mix., but that is more bloat, extra bucks and a HUGE increase
in instability.

I understand that concept quite well.
I was referring to the fact that Steve had said to use the lilo map option
to point to a System.map, however lilo docs say the map defaults to
/boot/map, the lilo map file, not the System.map file....
Or does the map file refer to both?
