I tried half a dozen distros, inclusing three you have mentioned.
IMHO it hardly matters which one you're using, but rather what you
can do with it. Distro is a starting point , what matters if where
you go from there.

Hi
Firstly, are you behind a firewall or proxy server ? If so have a read of
the README that's in the same directory as setiathome.
How's the rest of your internet connection, can you read:
http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/
can you ping anywhere, eg:
ping setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu

Xfree86 is a separate piece of software, not part of kernel. (except for
frambuffers) USB is being developed in current devel - 2.3.x kernel
tree.

I would really recommend to get a new kernel and newer distribution. I
remember
Linux Unverse and it's hardly my first choice. As for buying "Red Hats"
- you
can download it for free, or doanload Debian if you want to distance
yourself
from anything commercial.
You can install Linux Universe and upgrade it by hand to everything
newest and
greatest, but I think this would be more pain then it's worth.

I am running RH6.0 with kernel 2.2.5-15. If I upgraded to 2.2.5-22 will
there be support for the 3C575 cardbus network card? If not how would I go
about getting a driver for this without have to compile anything?

Grrr, another person compiling 2.3.x and not reading kernel-list. ;-)
As of 2.3.7 there was a mjor fs/caching rewrite. A lot of filesystems
are broken at the moment, including smb. If you want 2.3.x kernel and
smb support, go for 2.3.6.

Mutt has a steeper learning curve than Pine, but it's very flexible.
Mutt is to mail agents what Emacs is to editors (well, almost; it
doesn't have a built-in LISP interpreter yet). Slrn is great except
for some quirks (like the default key mapping).

Go back to your homes. You have nothing to fear. Everything will be OK.
OK, so you fear that Linux will become like windows, where one bad
OS/interface/tools suite fits all. This is not and will not be the case.
Because Linux is open source and infinitely configurable, there will
always be a number of smaller less well know distributions for the
technically savvy hackers.

At login only .bash_login is read by bash. Afterwards only .bashrc. Take
that into account, I suppose that's your trouble.
You could put the following into your .bash_profile to _always_ have
.bashrc evaluated:
# Get the aliases and functions

Perhaps, but "planned" doesn't need to mean 'socialist'. Any business
these days is planned to one degree or another. Second, Hayek shouldn't
be taken as a bible--he's written good books, but they're more intuitive
than 'scientific', in a sense that he's not using any data or specific
research to support his views. They seem convincing, but it's all
intuition. It's a bit like Belloc's books--interesting to read, massage
your brain and make you think. But not something cast in stone, just
another interesting opinion. And he's got a horrifying style, I want to

Subject: rsh creates a zombie
Date: 16 Jul 1999 23:14:01 GMT
On my local network one of the machines is connected to a modem
and that machine servers as a gateway, via ip masquerading, for
the other machines. I have a connection script, say pppstart, on
the gateway machine that consists of this:
startup stuff
pppd stuff &
ending stuff
exit
When I invoke the script on the gateway machine the prompt returns
and the pppd daemon is left running. If I invoke the script
from another machine on the lan, as:
rsh gateway pppstart
I do not get a prompt back on the machine as long as the daemon is
running. If I look at the processes running on gateway I see
pppstart as a zombie and pppd daemon both running. On the machine
that executed the rsh command I see the rsh command still running.
If I kill the rsh command via control/c or kill command on another
console, the daemon is killed as well.
Now particulars:
I only experience this behavior when the gateway machine is running
SuSE 6.1. If gateway is running either Slackware 4 or RedHat 6
there are no zombie processes and a prompt is returned after the
rsh command, and the pppd daemon is left running.
The behavior on gateway running SuSE is independent of the shell
since I have tried both the current and previous versions of bash
and csh.
I am at a loss to explain why the daemon remains tied to the rsh
process and the rsh is left connected to the zombie stub.
Any ideas at all?
BTW, if I execute the rsh command in the background as
rsh gateway pppstart &
I get a prompt back, of course, but when the ppp connection is
terminated on gateway a zombie rsh process is left on the original
machine.

How can you say something like that? What was so great about the Soviet
system before 'it became Stalinist'? It was a bunch of bullsh#t
ideologically and a bunch of butchery otherwise--from the very first
moment, forget Stalin. Stalin, if anything, stabilized all this crap.

I also think it's time to add '84 to the reading list <g>. As far as his
being a socialist, I think you're right, he was, but he always seemed to
me a disenchanted one. This is definitely a feeling that registers at
the end of his 'catalonia' book. There's no propaganda in his books.

That's reasonable. Pretty much all European countries are more or less

What is your modem? If you set it up correctly like I did, and still get

realized that the PCI modem that came with my machine won't work, because it

I hope for your sake it's not a PCI or winmodem.

Strictly speaking, I don't see why this is bad. In fact, this is
required in order to submit a proposal to OMG: there has to be a
working prototype of a product based on the proposed standard. Iow,
proposals should be minimally tested in the real world, and not just a
load of paper. So if that's what MS does, then it's fine.
