Star Office 5.2 does a good job. It comes free with SuSE 7.0 and perhaps some
other Linux distributions.
StarOffice and Quatro Pro do most of what excel do except for the crashing.

Your locales seem to be screwed up. I had a worst local problem with SuSE 6.4 but it
got fixed with SuSE 7.0. It seemed to be a problem with the installer.
Which version are you running? The locales in Mandrake 7.0 worked great last I checked.

The file creation mode mask as set by umask or inherited from the
shell's parent
put the "umask ###" in each of the /home/user/.bash_profile, where ### is
the default attribute you are giving
same as the "chmod ###" if you execute it manually.

Subject: Sound & Exceed 6.2
Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 04:14:32 GMT
I have two machines I use constantly. My main machine is running win2k. I
use it to connect to the linux box with Hummingbird Exceed 6.2. I really
would like to be able to hear sounds from my linux machine. The linux
machine is running Redhat 7.0.
>From what I've read so far, it looks like esounds is the main sound server
for enlightenment and it is capable of exporting the sounds over the
network. However there isn't a windows client/server that can receive this
export from esounds.
My other option is to use the soundcard that is already in the linux
machine, hook some speakers up and have twice as many speakers on my desk.
I could live with this because I really need sound on both machines. I have
tried this, but it seems that when your connected via exceed, the linux box
will not play sounds. However when I use the linux box directly (ie move
all my keyboard, mouse and video cables) then the sound works. Yes I could
buy a KVM but I'm trying to figure out a way so that I don't have to do
that.
Anyhelp would be appreciated
Thanks.

Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 04:33:24 GMT
Hello everyone!
I just installed TurboLinux 6.0.4 OSE Workstation today, and I noticed
that it uses RPM. Well, I thought that is cool. So, i went to download
an rpm from freshmeat.net and install it. Well, I did a rpm -ihv
<package>, and it gave me this error:
only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of
RPM
Gah! Whats this mean? I tried it on like 5 different packages, and all
said the same thing.
I installed an rpm that came with the distrobution cd, and it installed
successfully.
Does anyone have any idea on what to do to fix this? I used tarballs on
some things (QT, Licq), but sometimes they are a pain in the arse. Any
ideas or fixes would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

And Adobe has *free* readers for just about all operating systems.
Adobe does not play the same games as MS -- this proably totally pisses
Mr. Bill off. Adobe is probably the only major software house to have
totally avoided being trashed on some level my MS.
Note: there is a page on Adobe's website listing all of the companies

Can you say 'Ignorance'? The 'majority of the corporate world' moved
from 'sectraries' to desktop PCs: i.e. from dictation to *typewriter*
jockies to 'smart' typewriters. Important documents in the past went
as typewriten *manuscripts* to a *professional* typesetter, who used
*natural* intelligence to *deduce* formatting issues from the
(basically *unformatted*) typewriten manuscripts. The corporate types
really had no clue what was going on except in a vague way. Since the
*professional* typesetters were (relatively) low paid (relative to
corp. execs.) and were (are?) considered a 'blue collar' crew (one rung
above the (ink stained) guys running the printing press itself). The
current corporate types think that they can replace these
*professionals* with some cheap software. The corporate types have not
every had any training in proper typesetting and have little or no
interest in taking the time to learn. And have a massive Eye Candy
"sweet tooth". They see a dancing paper-clip and think they are getting
an 'expert system' loaded with 'AI'. Hah! They are really getting a
worthless marketing gimmick and are totally conned by it.

I have found a useful tool: 'strings'. The strings command will
extract the essential 'content' of a word document:
% strings -n1 foo.doc | fmt | less -X
Yes, all of the formatting and random graphics are totally lost. As far
as *I* am concerned, if the words (text) do not convey what needs to be
conveyed, then the document is probably worthless.
