Are you sure LILO toasted the NT boot loader, instead of just overwriting the MBR?
If you have a disk with the NT boot partition as /dev/hda1, you can point LILO
to /dev/hda1 using the 'other' directive.
Your actual situation depends on what the user instructed the installer to do. I think
that it recommends installing to the MBR, in which case the above should work.
Otherwise,
the repair disk would be a good bet, if it's updated. If not, try backing everything up
with the NT backup tool (from another machine perhaps?), format the partition using the
NT format tools, and restore the backup. Any partition formatted by NT looks for the
ntldr
file.

After what I thought was a good install of Linux and Xconfigurator the
system asked me if I wanted to start Xwindows automatically after booting. I
said yes.
The system shut down correctly after "sending termination" messages etc. It
went through the normal machine initialization, accessed the harddrive and
displayed LI on the screen with the cursor flasning after the I
and the system is hung. Any ideas?

Parallel port is not been detected in RH6.1, what can i do to resolve this
problem, what I've done so far is created a line in the /ect/conf.modules
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc. this has made no difference to the
printtool util.
what is needed to get the parallel port to be recognized

After installing exmh, all my mail folders appear in the display with
a plus sign in front of them, e.g., `+in.procmail' or `+infobeat'.
Clicking on these produces the error message `Folder +infobeat does
not exist.' Naturally, it doesn't exist; there are no folders that
begin with a plus. Anyone seen this before? Any idea where it's
getting these folder names? As it stands, only inbox is available for
usage.

Usually you'll get a rousing zap or plink with a monitor dying. Check the cables
thoroughly, you might have just had a pin go bad on the db9 connector.

Hello!
If I download an ISO image (say FreeBSD / Linux) how do I burn that onto the
CD in WinNT?
The software I have (CeQuadrat) merely shows me the file ( redhat6_2.iso) if
I drag and drop it in. I tried Nero
too but it doesn't know how to handle it.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong......
I know I could extract it using winimage and then burn it, but then I'm
probably going to lose the bootable
nature of the image.
Pl. advise.

Just fyi... I tried www.dishnetwork.com today with the new preview release of
Netscape V6.0. No crashes, but the url "hot spots" (or whatever you call them)
didn't necessarily line up with the graphics.
I didn't see that problem on any other site.

the very begining that
a wave sound is being palyed. This could happen for many situations: CD

I noticed that when running a multi-threaded program (using
POSIX threads) under Linux that it spawns multiple processes
(via ps -ef). Is it really doing that? Are threads
implemented or are they somehow "faked" by using multiple
processed? What's going on with threads?
(When I compile and run the same program under Solaris, it only
shows up once in the process list.)

Hi, there,
I have one network configuration problem maybe someone could
help me out:
I just installed RedHat 6.0 on my system which has Ethenet card
on the machine. I have already setup the network configuration stuffs
such as IP address etc by using linuxconf and/or control-panel. It
seems that the system can detect the hardware and it activates the
driver for the Ethenet card. I started network related daemons. But
network does not work. I used "ping" to check the network and it
stalked and gave me no response. I donot know what is wrong with
this.
Could you anyone help me and give me some hints to debug it? Thanks.

There is (or was) a POSIX subsystem in NT. However, I don't think
anyone uses it. If you target Win32, you are definitely _not_ using
it. If an application is not POSIX compliant, then what is the point
of POSIX?
It stands to reason that if you are to require a POSIX system, all the
software you run should also run in a POSIX system. If you don't
require the software to run in a POSIX system, you aren't requiring
POSIX.

' What do you think ``file a class action law suit'' means? There's
' no class action law suit fairy who will wave magic pixie dust and
' make things all better; the only reason class action law suits work
' is because Big Brother(I am presuming you mean the government when

It is a bit different from asking the DOJ to do it. And the Court is
really not supposed to be a part of the government per se. If the
court is part of the government, then the prosecution is playing with
a stacked deck.
Oh. I see your point.
OK. Why don't we grab our guns and attack Microsoft in a truly
effective way?
I think Microsoft is going to do themselves in. Free Software (in the
GNU sense) exists because of sufficient annoyance with proprietary
software. I think that in time, people and businesses will become
sufficiently annoyed with Microsoft to look at the alternative, eg
Free Software. With luck, this will include the hardware vendors who
we really need on our side. It takes software to make hardware work,
and that software should be Free.
I think we will also find a need for Free Hardware Standards. Not
that I have anything against Intel, but how are we to move on from the
80's PC architecture if we don't?
