I recently upgraded a staff memebers computer from redhat 5.0 to redhat
6.0 and a few things have been causing problems...

1) Can't start modem

This is the biggie. suexecing /usr/sbin/pppd and then trying it gives an
error that the user does not have permission to access /dev/ttyS2.
suexecing /dev/ttyS2 gives an error that the user doesn't have
permission to use /usr/sbin/pppd. A nice circle, and I can't figure out
how to break out of it...

2) Can't shutdown w/o password

I have been unable to find a way to let a user shutdown the machine
without entering their password. I've put the user in the root group,
the wheel group, the shutdown group, and I've enabled all the privilage
options in linuxconf, all to no avail.

3) rm no longer asks for confirmation

He wants this back, so when he deletes something, it will ask "Are you
sure you want to delete file" I have no idea how to change it...

Well, couldn't you hold an environment variable? Call it XTERM_Number or
something, put the number one or zero in it to start, then exec each xterm
from a shell script that increments the variable by one. Use said
environment variable in the title.

Date: Mon, 26 Jul 1999 01:31:15 GMT

My modem works well in Windoze98 on COM2,IRQ3,0x2F8.
Whats the trick to getting this thing working in Caldera Open Linux 2.2
I can open kppp but when I try to query my modem (using all the ttyS
entries{0-3) all I get are two different messages. One says "cannot open
the modem" and the other says " the modem is busy". I get the "...busy"
message on ttyS1 which I figure is where it should work.
When the kernal is booting I can see all four serial ports are loading
using default values for IRQ and I/O, etc.
I have run <ln -s ttyS1 /dev/modem> but no difference. I tried setting up
the rest of kppp with my names server ips, ISP phone number and all but
still no go.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. TIA
Jim

best answer for your question.

Don't run anything as root. create a user and USE IT!

The worst that can happen is that you loose your local stuff but your
system
will still work. That's why you do backups though.

Running full time as root is the first and biggest newbie mistake.

Hello,

I am planning to get myself a laptop. Many people recomended the Think
Pad 390. Has anyone had any experience using this model in Linux? Do
all the systems work (audio? video? cdrom?)? I'd like to get in contact
with a Think Pad 390 user who has sucessfully used this model in Linux.
Please follow up on this post or contact be through my private e-mail

Thanks.

Hmmm... I'm currently in win98 and out of curiosity checked the
details on my connection to earthlink.net. It shows CHAP, but when I
set up SlackWare using pppsetup I used a simple script and it worked
just fine. Guess CHAP's not really an issue. (There was also an option
to set it up as CHAP)

I use EarthLink with SlackWare as well as WinDoze.. You can get
the dns numbers etc from their tech support and use that info for the
pppsetup script in slak, or with other distros I'd recommend searching
for EzPPP..
It's an X windows program and is really easy to use. Be sure to
read the docs though. You'll need to set a few permissions etc. Don't
remember the address offhand but there's a link on my home page.

I have been trying to send messages with Leafnode. but no one
seems to be replying to them. I am on a Domain name Service called
dhis.org. my news-server is on my ISP (actually they are outsourcing
it) my isp is ctol.net. I just set the hostname = ctol.net in my
/etc/leafnode/config I am running a beta of it called leafnode 1.10b2
which has been working here. I also need some one to reply to this so
I can see if my email address of [EMAIL PROTECTED] is working
also as my uplink had a crash about a week ago and I am not totally
sure all is quite right yet. emails from my [EMAIL PROTECTED] arive
here. and mails to [EMAIL PROTECTED] do show up when getpop3 goes to
get them from ctol.net
I also have been awaiting a response to my questions in
alt.linux.slackware reguaring bash 2.03 which also have not even seen
a reply.
btw, if you are interested in dhis.org their website is
http://www.dhis.org The website for my isp is http://www.ctol.net One
of the few remaining ISP's that have shell accounts.

Unfortunately you may problems with both the video (SiS 5587) and sound

It you really want no worries, then you should disable the integrated stuff

You could write a quick-and-dirty shell script to `ps a | grep xterm |
wc -l` to get the number of xterms running, add one to it, and set the
title of the launced xterm to that. That is, of course, assuming that you
aren't sharing the machine with people running remote xterms. In that
case, you'd have to do a `ps au | grep yourrloginname etc...`.

Actually, I haven't switched to Linux, but I *have* gone to a dual-boot
system (Win98 and Caldera 2.2). This is my first real encounter into
Linux. I am using it as a second desktop OS, but I am currently having
problems with it (#1: it won't recognize my HSP MicroModem 56K that
came with my new emachines PC; #2: I can't seem to find a driver for my
Canon BJC-4400 so I can print -- BTW, if anyone can help me with this,
please e-mail me!). If and when I can overcome these two problems,
Linux will very likely become my primary OS (I have to use Win98 at work
- I'm an IS Manager), and when Linux supports USB (if it does now, I'm
not aware of it), I will likely use Win98 very little.

In short, wasted money...that isn't a real modem, it's a phone-jack on a board,
all the real work is done by a Windows-only driver.

The HSP (Host signal Processing) modem is a lost cause, but the printer may
be doable.

It supports USB, but not very well...it's getting better.

If you really feel that strongly about it, put your money where your
