Hi all,
I wonder if someone might know what the solution for my problem could
be. I know some other people that had the same problem, but no one knew
how to solve it.
I had installed both Linux Mandrake 7.0 and the Win98 on the same hard
disk, when I decided to defragment the disk under Windoze. I thought
that this should not be a problem, because Windows was not able to 'see'
the Linux partitions. It has however destroyed the LILO, so it is not
possible to boot up neither Linux nor Windoze.
Someone told me that it might be possible to recover the system by
reinstalling the linux as an upgrade, and that it would recover the
LILO, but it was not possible to reinstall it, because it seems that it
has also destroyed the partition system of Linux.
Does anyone know if it is possible to recover the system after this
problem, or any idea how to defrag the hard disk without destroying the
Linux?
Cheers,
Unai

usually xdvi tries this in /var/tmp , so make sure that this directory

Hi,
i want to move from M$ to Corel Linux (but also KEEP Win98 for now) and
have a few questions:
1. i want to install paralell onto a win98 drive (C:\windows\ +
C:\Linux\ - all Fat32). will this ruin my win98 installation?
2. if i decide to later install Linux onto its own partition with its
own file system, how do i delete linux from my fat32 C: drive without
disturbing my win98 installation?
3. are there any benefits to the linux file system?
4. could you give me some examples of these benefits?
5. if linux is on my C: drive (fat32) with windows, can linux
wordperfect red my win wordperfect documents, and vica-versa?
6. if linux is on its own partition with its own file system, can linux
WP then still read my win WP documents on my C: drive (fat32)?
7. any suggestions on how to best share files between the two system
during my (long) transition period between linux and windows 98?

Assuming a perfect connection from them to you a 56K (kilobits/second)
means they get 7K (kiloBytes/second). Of course the realities of the
line with squash that at bit, probably right to your 5K limit.

There is no need to crosspost this much. This is a standard operation
that every half decent linux user can answer, you don't need to ask
everyone all over the world.
f'up to comp.os.linux.misc.
And btw, do a dmesg | more.

Well, so what? Put it back. Get out your rescue diskette or

Probably not, but doing a partitionless loopback install has its own
problems. Linux will run much more slowly since it has to go from the
raw disk through the FAT filesystem driver through a loopback interface
through the ext2 driver, instead of directly from the raw disk to the
ext2 driver. If you have a reasonable amount of free space on the disk
(at least 1.5G) then partition the disk and do a real Linux install.

Just delete the (very large) file the partitionless install creates on
your disk.
>3. are there any benefits to the linux file system?
>4. could you give me some examples of these benefits?
Security and access control through UID/GIDs, plus no need to run
DEFRAG.EXE every few weeks. Also Linux can read/write to ext2 more
quickly than it can read/write to FAT.

Yes.

Linux can read and write FAT32 without problems. Lose9x can read and
write ext2 filesystems using the explore2fs utility--it's not really
transparent, but it works. For maximum ease of use, keep as much of
your data as possible on the FAT32 partition.

One option is if you made a boot floppy during your install. If you did,
then this is easy: Just put it in and boot the system. Your system will come
up into Linux and you will not have any problems running lilo and putting
lilo in your master boot record.
there is another solution, if the above boot floppy was never made:
under dos, do:
fdisk /MBR
to get rid of whatever crap is in your master boot record
Get tom's root/boot linux (http://www.toms.net)
put it on floppy (it's made for a floppy)
stick it in your floppy drive and boot the computer
once booted, use it to mount all your partitions both linux & FAT16/32 (NOT
your swap partition)
locate the file called "lilo.conf" on your linux partition (if you mounted
linux under a directory called "linux", then it will pro'lly be in
/linux/etc/lilo.conf).
then do:
/sbin/lilo -C /linux/etc/lilo.conf
read the man pages for lilo to understand
Now you should have your system setup with lilo again

Nope. The block size is wrong there, and the "count" is severely wrong.
You'll get I/O errors out the wazoo. The "readcd" utility that comes
with recent cdrecord releases is supposed to do the right thing, but I
never got it to work. I've done it like so:
mount /cdrom
df
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hdc 476504 476504 0 100% /cdrom
Now divide that "476504" number by 2, giving 238252. Then just
dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/tmp/cdimage.raw bs=2k count=238252
The bs=2k is there because data sectors on a CD-ROM are supposed to be
2048 bytes in size. You can actually leave the "count=" off, but you'll
get I/O errors when dd tries to read past the end of the CD, and you may
have to manually Ctrl-C to stop dd. Either way, when dd is finished,
just do the cdrecord command with a blank CD-R(W) in the drive.
This will not work with audio CDs, naturally--use cdparanoia for that...

But it does not seem to be only that. The partition table seems to be
damaged too. Should that recover it also?

Sounds like you just need to set up a "listserv" and enter a cron job to go
and check/compare file date/time stamps on files in the usual places, then
any changes can be looked up and appropreately mailed a notice on the
listserv. Simplistic but sometimes, simple is better.

I'm using an ethernet connection and can boot from a kernel image
copied to a floppy. The module for my NIC, eth0, is locate on the
hard-disk; so it is possible. Maybe you aren't loading the correct
module version for you NIC.

Well, if Win98 starts, then DOS does. Win98 runs DOS first (autoexec.bat,
config.sys, etc. and you can use this to clean up things before windows
touches them - used by install routines to access files that windows has
in use - the old "you must restart your computer to finish this
installation"). Did you check:
1: When Windows booting, pressing F8 (I guess) should give you a menu
Can you start DOS clean here (is the problem only "restarting" in DOS
or "starting" DOS)?
2: Have you checked config.sys, autoexec.bat (for starting) and config.win
dosstart.bat (for restarting)?
3: Is there a copy of command.com in the root directory?
To get by for now, you should be able to start DOS with a boot floppy
(will have to set path, etc. and include config.sys CD drivers, etc.).

Just a guess--been a long time since I worked with RedHat--I'd look at
/etc/X11 and its subdirectories for symlinks that point back and forth
at each other.
Usually there are system default versions of Xsession and Xinitrc that
test for a ~/.xsession and branch accordingly. Look at the branches
that execute if ~/.xsession is found. You'll probably find an infinite
loop somewhere.
