You should be able to find more information at
http://www.windows-nt.com/multiboot/directboot.html, although when I just
tried it, I got a "domain not found" error, so I don't know if that URL
still works. If not, check the Linux HOWTOs. There are several on booting
various combinations of OSs. Some of these may give instructions on using
LILO as the main loader, though; it's not clear if this would be
acceptable to you or not. Finally, I've got brief instructions on doing
this in my book, _The Multi-Boot Configuration Handbook_
(http://www.rodsbooks.com/multiboot/). Specifically, pp. 99-101 cover NT's
OS Loader and gives an example of using it to boot Linux. I wrote this
section using NT 4.0 as a guide, but AFAIK things haven't changed
substantially with Windows 2000.

Hi all,

so I bought myself a nifty new toy: an E-IDE Yamaha CD-RW (I don't know
which model, but I checked it, and it's supported).

Following the cd-writing-howto and the README.ATAPI from xcdroast, I
recompile the kernel with scsi-support and so on and try to reboot.
But the kernel panics andtells me it can't mount root:

request_module[block-major-8]: Root fs not mounted
Can't mount root on 3 00

or something like that.

Is there anybody out there who can enlighten me or direct me to further
reading?

TIA,

-Jan

Hi

What should I do to change my PS1 variable in a xterm window?

According the Bash-Prompt-HOWTO, PS1 string should be set in .bashrc. It's
dont work to me. I try also in .bash_profile and .xinitrc. However, if I
start another shell session from a xterm window the prompt is set
correctly to this second shell session.

Tried it, but didn't work ("another fetchmail job is running in foreground")

Allen: you expect an email server to do scheduling? That's hardly unix
philosophy. An email server like sendmail or qmail does just that, serve
email, and at least the second does an excellent job at it. Then if you
need scheduling use additional programs. I think there is calendar and
plan which work by either getting started when you log in or through cron
jobs. They can even send you email using the standard email server.

I assume from what you say that when you entered printtool, you
found /dev/lp0 was detected. Did you click on the select button
and choose the filter for your printer? (I think it is
there is one HP with a ...C there.)
If you run
/etc/rc.d/init.d/lpd status
does it show the lpd daemon running? If not do
/etc/rc.d/init.d/lpd start

Add the following line to your /etc/inittab file under the other getty
calls:

S0:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS0 DT19200 vt100

Like some others in this forum, it is not that I don't remember my
password, but that there is obviously a corrupted root password entry
in my OS (Linux-Mandrake 7.0). Logging in as "Linux single" is no
problem, but editing the "shadow file" to remove the passsword is, as
this is a "read only" file, something that the responses to "lost
passwords" haven't taken into account. How do I (or we) change vi to
read/write at the linux single level in order to repair the password
file?

If you put a new PS1 in .bashrc, .bash_profile, or .xinitrc, they don't
take effect in the current shell, only in newly spawned shells.

If you want a new PS1 for all logins, put it in /etc/bashrc.

Have you tried chmod +w on the file before using vi on it?
Or, use the "w!" command rather than "w" in vi to write it. If you are
running in single-user mode, you should be able to write it.

That was cruel. (GNU) Tar's man page is ludicrously inadequate, and

You might say "info tar" but the info tool is also ludicrously
