How do you change a system's timezone in RH6 (EST->GMT)? I've heard from previous
versions to use /usr/lib/timeinfo or something, but I have no such directory on my
system.

Also, is there a manner which will not require a reboot?

Try Xchat, its pretty good, and similar to Mirc. Tho I must admit I still

Subject: linux backup facility?
Date: 28 Jul 1999 12:31:18 GMT

I recently had to re-install linux (redhat 6.0) on a blank disk.
My original plan had been to generate a tape backup of the entire disk
starting at / using tar, install linux from the cd distribution,
and then untar the tape to recreate my configuration. This
attempt failed. Tar stopped at the tape device in the /dev directory,
and when I attempted to untar the tape ignoring the /dev
directory, the restore left me with an unbootable system (even
lilo stopped working). Clearly my backup strategy was not useful.

On other unix systems (like SGI, IBM etc.) there is usually a
backup and restore script. When restoring from such a script,
a minimal system is read into the machine either from a floppy
or a cd. The minimal system includes the restore script, which
is able to reconstruct the disk to its situation at the time of
the last backup. Windows also has such facilities. My question
is: does such a backup/restore facility exist for linux?

Errr..I'm trying to compile with the gcc from the egcs package, that is
the whole point of this thread. The g++ was merely a vain symlink
attempt to gcc because 'g++' is what the KDE app expected and there is
no g++ on my system. This got me thru 'configure' but when I did the
make it barked about __null, not having a clue what it was (this is at
compiling stage). This made me think I might need 'g++' as a separate
program.

I would love to use egcs or any fuckin compiler if I could compile the
following major C++ app under Suse 6.1:

>>>>
#include <iostream.h>
#include <stdio.h>    // or <stddef.h>

char *p=NULL;
>>>>>

without getting errors on gcc -c:

> Can't find iostream.h
> __null is not defined

So permit me to remain sceptical that the egcs in Suse 6.1 specifically
is kind of lacking something. I know it might boil down to a package I
haven't installed but I did a full dependency check in Yast and it
didn't say I was missing anything required for egcs.

Try compiling latest kppp (or any KDE app) on Suse 6.1 with egcs 1.1.2
(i think - whatever egcs came with Suse 6.1).

rpm -qfi `which gcc` -> egcs

Sorry if I bang on about 'Suse 6.1' too much it's just that I'm sure
that if this _IS_ a real problem then it's something to do with how
Suse was packaged up and not Linux in general. I've seen someone else
on a linux forum complain about c++ going missing from the std install
on suse 6.1 and the inability to compile KDE apps with this system. I
can't find anything in the Suse support archives however.

Hello,

Im trying to make a cgi program who can be used to change, using net
browser,
passwords. With this solution, I can change unix and smb password to
sync. them.

Well, I need to use smbpasswd programm like this :
        > smbpasswd <username> <new_passwd>

So I think I could use exec functions to do that :

char *smbargs[] = { "smbpasswd", NULL, NULL, NULL };
smbargs[1] = login;
smbargs[2] = newpass;

if (fork() == 0)
        execv ("/usr/bin/smbpasswd",  smbargs);

or smthing like :

if (fork() == 0)
        execl ("/usr/bin/smbpasswd", "smbpasswd", login, newpass,
(char*) 0);

But my smbpasswd dont change... ???

If I make this little programm :

lilsoft.c:
void main() {
        execl ("/usr/bin/smbpasswd", "smbpasswd", "toto", "tata", 0);
}

and use ./lilsoft, it's running !!

My cgi script use root owner and group and perhaps my exec function dont
use the
same user and group ?!?

Can you help me ?

Thanks,

Hello guys,

I have a big problem on my hands!

I think I've crashed my Linux system. I was running some applications
in the background, and all of a sudden the system froze. I know that
doesn't make sense, but that's what happened!

I tried to login remotely, but didn't get anywhere. So I hit the reset
button on the computer. Now the system won't boot up!!

As it is doing its initial boot up it says the following:

Checking root filesystem
/dev/hda6 contains a file system with errors, check forced

                                               [FAILED]

/dev/hda6: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENSY; RUN fsck MANUALLY
                (ie, without -a or -p options)

*** An error occurred during the file system check
*** Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
*** when you leave the shell.

Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D for normal startup):

Do you have any clue as to what the problem might be or even how to fix
it/get around it??? I'm afraid I might have to re-format!!

Thanks
K.Kal

I had this problem once due to a cooling fan failure. The heat caused
some errors on the disk. To solve the problem, just do as the message
says: Give root password. You will be dumped into a shell where you
do as the message says: RUN fsck MANUALLY (ie, without -a or -p
options).

fsck /dev/hda6

The fsck program will ask you questions about how to correct all of the
problems it has. In my case, the problem files were netscape cache
files so it didn't matter what happened. Your mileage may vary...

Good luck!

To the best of my knowledge there has never been good documentation
for any system because of the individual factor. For instance, old
docs for electronic maintenance used to be so anal most people ignored
them while say win3.11 docs were too vague. It's a hit and miss kind
of thing. There are many good FAQ's for Linux - you just have to look
for them.

Uuuuh - the fact that there is useful information on 1500 pages is
amazing. UNIX is best understood in parts. There are separate books
for all different aspects of UNIX, each one at LEAST 300 pages long.
It just isn't that easy.

Well, your "UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY" message
is a direct result of your hitting the reset button. Linux didn't
get the chance to ensure that it's disk buffers were flushed (a controlled
shutdown does this), so some critical data wasn't written to the disk when
you rebooted. This in turn left the filesystem in an inconsistant state,
where some information on it indicates that data exists, but other info
indicates that data doesn't exist. Follow the instructions given on the screen;
login in single user mode, run fsck on the drive, and repair the inconsistancies.

As to your original problem (linux freezing), we'll need more information in order
to determine the cause and cure.
