ATZ> didn't want to say it is not.

        Well no its not.

Its a job which does require a highly skilled labour force,
but this is probably different from the way that professional is
normally defined. In my country we had several major centres of
shipbuilding, which dominated several areas of the country. They have
all gone now. Partly because ships require large amounts of steel, and
energy, and much of the coal, and iron ore in this country has gone,
but mostly because our govt decided that the free market was a good
way to go, when many of the other countries building ships were very
protectionist. The result? It was easier to build ships elsewhere, and
cheaper to sack workers in the UK because of the lack of social
legislation. This is still happening now. We are loosing the skilled
jobs and instead gaining crisp packet factories. This is the result of
a having a free market govt.

Of course the industrial areas of britian are all in the north
or even worse Northern ireland, wheras the areas with silly salaries
are in all the south. In otherwords the tax cuts all went to the
south, whilst large sections of the north were decimated. Of course
the govt at that time didnt give a time because no one in the north
voted for them anyway. The current govt has also gone for the centre
right ground because people to the left have no one else to vote for
so dont matter anyway. And still we have large scale deprevation. Our
child mortality rates are rising, and TB is on the increase. If you
know anything at all public health concerns you will know that both of
these conditions are diseases of poverty, and nothing else.

The decline of shipbuilding (like so many other industries)
has left a sad trail across my country. And the skills that were in
those industries have been lost, and in many cases the communities
that went with them. We've instead turned into a mobile work force,
being flexible. Only problem is now that there are all the jobs have
moved into the south of the country, where the houses are too
expensive to buy or even rent (I have a reasonable job with a salary a
little above the average, so quite a lot above the average for my age,
and over half of my pay check, before other bills, or food goes out on
rent, for which I get a shoebox in a inner city ghetto). Wheras in the
north of the country you can buy a house for 1 pound (about the cost
of two loaves of bread) but cant get a job.

Hmm. Sorry I didnt mean to wax lyrical. I get distressed and
demoralised at times by the insanity of it all. I should warn you that
if this goes on my longer I shall pick up my guitar and start to sing
folk songs badly.

        Phil

When I was configuring my 2.2.10 kernel I came upon this option.
I sometimes use my machine as a ip masquerade proxy for my cable modem
and
sometimes use it as a normal host. While it says this is required for ip
masq
The help also says Never say Y for a normal host.

Do I need to say yes or no? I selected no but have not tried the masq
feature yet since
the kernel re-compile.

This might not be the problem but you really should not run fsck on a live
filesystem. If possible boot off a floppy and check it.

I don't see why not, i don't use Debian, I use SlackWare :-\\
I would still try to run fsck this disk when its not in use.

Hi All;

Thats a terrible looking subject line but I hope it gets my request
across.

I have looked several times in the past and I still can't seem to find
such a beast. Any one else have any success?

What I am looking for is a "program" that can be run on
Win3.1,95,98,NT, Mac, Linux, etc. that will allow an audio "chat" or
"talk" session to be initiated between internet connected computers.

I would prefer one which doesn't require a centralized service but
that can be initiated by any party ... much like the current UNIX
"talk" service.

I guess the key points are audio chat and cross platform.

Any one have any luck or experience? Thanks in advance.

You have not been replacing any hardware in the case where you might have
pulled the cable out that connects the cd-rom to the sound card have you?

There is a separate volume control for cd-rom input that is configurable.
I don't think I have ever seen it get stuck on off before but if you
happen to have windows running you might want to double click on the
little volume control in your task bar and see what the cd-rom volume
control is set to. Or under Linux use some type of audio mixer app to
check this, I don't remember which one I use as I am not at my Linux box
right now.

I just got this working, and my ISP uses the same 3Com device. I don't
remember the exact config files (and I'm at work where I'm safe from Linux)
but I believe they are these in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/:
pap-secrets
chat-ppp0
ifcfg-ppp0

If you use netcfg from within X-windows, go to the Communications tab and
make sure there are NO Send or Expect strings. Then go to the PAP or CHAP or
CHAT tab (memory again) and enter your username and password there. For
PAP/CHAP authentication to work, the transaction goes on in binary, not as a
text exchange.

Sorry, forgot to include, that yes, my soundcard is otherwise
functional and working. There are no problems playing wavs, mp3s,
even doing full duplex operations with SLab.

Thanks again!

<newsgroups trimmed> please post in the one newsgroup
that is best for the answer sought.

The A3D cards are not yet supported in linux, at least
as far as open source is concerned. The manufacturer
requires NDA agreements, and this is not compatible with
open source, so the manufacturer has not released the
specifications that would allow a driver to be written more
easily. More info on this is at www.alsa-project.org

http://www.opensound.com/osshw.html has some development
at the beta release stage for some A3D cards, but this
may be a commercial venture.

The short solution for sound in linux is to use a supported
sound card.

Yes, several:

        NFS (read the NFS-HOWTO)
rsh (ssh) + tar or rsync -- rsh & tar should already be there.
See http://rsync.samba.org/ for Rsync info. rsync is
real useful to 'sync' directory trees -- only needed files are copied.
Rsync can use rsh, ssh, or nfs or its own server protocol.

If one box is MS-Windows (or MacOS) only, consider Samba
(netatalk) on the Linux box.

Get the glibc version that is the default libs for RH 6.0, however it
supports the older libs, libc5, as well so either one should work. some
may not have both sets of libaries installed, especially if you build
your own system.

Now! but if you would have followed the thread you would have noticed
that people don't seem to know that egcs is replacing GCC.

Whenever people talk about GCC they are not talking about egcs as
they want to install the old buggy GCC on their system.

Soon we will have to get used to call egcs GCC but the old GCC is
still around.

It would be interesting to know who is the moron that started the
rumor. I have G2 on my system and it works. Get a life!

"program not registered" probably means either mountd or nfsd isn't
running on the server-side. From the client, try: rpcinfo -p
and see if it shows nfs and mountd.

You can use the mtools utility, copy the text file to a dos floppy and
the translation is automatic.

As several people have suggested, you may be using a shadow
passwords so the passwords are in /etc/shadow, in which case
you have to remove the password entry from it. But that file is
read-only and you have to change its permissions in order to
write to it. You can tell if you are using shadow passwords if
/etc/passwd has an 'x' in each password field.

In using the method you described, you have to be extremely
careful. Certainly before beginning you should make
copies of /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow, so if worse comes to
worst you can copy them back. You should still be able to fix things by
being very careful about your editing the passwd or shadow
file.

However, there is a good chance you can avoid all that
trouble and instead just boot as single user by doing
linux single
at the lilo prompt. On most systems, one has to make a special
effort to have the system prompt you for a password when booting
single user. If you can boot single user without a password,
then without having to fiddle with rescue disks,
you should be able to repair the password file and/or shadow file.
If you don't have a shadow file, you probably put some garbage
in passwd. If you do have a shadow file, you should put the
'x' back in root's password field, which you probably deleted.

Hi Joe

Your best bet for a Linux reference book is the administration book from
O'Reilly. I'm using the "Using Linux" book from Que, and it's just too basic.
Even a newbie outgrows this book pretty quickly. I've never heard any
complaints about the O'Reilly series.
