Have a look at the manpage for whatever server you're using. If it's wu-ftpd,
check /etc/ftpaccess, which there is also a man page for.
A note: You don't want to allow people to do this though. Some of the exploits
for various servers involve the need to create a large enough path to overflow
the buffer, which you will be allowing them to do...

I like KPPP from KDE. I found it easy to setup, and easy to
use. I use it under Redhat 6.0 and the Gnome environment.

Hi,
I've got a laptop (Travel Mate 313T from Acer) installed with win98 and
linux (RedHat 6.0).
I'm trying to get the network to work: I've got the above adapter, which
works under Win98 (can ping to/from other linux machines).
I've set up all the network information (name, domain, ip address, mask,
gateway, DNS...) both using linuxconf and in /etc/pcmcia/network.opt.
When I insert the card (or when booting with the card inside), the card
is recognized correctly and the link light on the transceiver is up. But
I cannot use the network (no ping in neither directions).
I've tried different irq (3,5,10,11,15 (15 is the one win98 uses)) but
nothing help.
What else can be the problem?
Thanks,
Ilan

Hi, didn't get that far - but I do have a similar system except that my hard
drive is a Fujitsu 13 Gb - and I had no other hard drive in the machine.
I was booting from Red Hat 6, and tried from SuSE 6.1 but neither could
detect the ATA66 - so thanks for the tip re: 2.3.12
(my system also fried itself - why is unknown yet - but eventually I'll be
ready to try again)
Anyway - please keep me informed as to how you get on at email

Yes, I agree. I guess a better way would be
umount /home
Make sure that it is unmounted (eg run mount to see if it is still there.)
mv /home /oldhm
mkdir /home
chmod a+rwx /home
mount /home
rm -r /oldhm

Subject: Please look at these kernel error messages..!
Date: Thu, 05 Aug 1999 12:53:51 +0300
Hi,
After my 3.2GB disk crashed, I had it replaced with a 6.4GB new one.
I reinstalled RH5.1, and the kernel started giving error messages (in
/var/adm/messages..)
I installed RH6 (on different partitions) and got the same errors.
(1) - I would like to get pointers to UPDATED literature on the limitations
about
boot partitions, lilo, etc. Many people are posting related questions...
(2) - How do I check if my boot partition is below cylinder 1024? Should I do
it?
(3) - Now to the messages: (I copied them by hand via piece of paper, so they
are not
precise...)
hda: lost interrupt
hda: status error: status=0x58 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest}
hda: drive not ready for command
ide0: reset: success
----
hda: lost interrupt
hda: read_intr: status=0x50 {DriveReady SeekComplete}
----
hda: irq timeout: status=0x58 { blah blah }
ide0: reset: success
----
hda: status error: status=0xff {Busy}
hda: drive not ready for command
ide0: reset: success
The messages appear randomly but quite often (every now and then, not
constantly)
They seem to cause damage to the computation, since some software (a theorem
prover)
reinstalled after the crash is not working properly.
Also, after properly shutting down, there are "slow" (fsck-needing) boots,
which shouldn't be.
I will greatly appreciate any of the following info:
- directions to another relevant info source
- any diagnostic, like "Your new disk is broken!" or "check this and that
jumper/connection"
- etc etc
Many thanks,
Marcelo Glusman

To my knowledge, this is a kernel compile-time parameter (MAX_PROC or
MAX_TASK), but I can't tell you where.
Alternavitely, on a per-user basis there is also a limit (man ulimit),
that you can set upto MAX_TASK through ulimit (bash) or limit (*csh)

Hello,
I need some help with glimpse.
I want to index our local newsgroups. The newsgroups entries have a
large header with informations, which should not be indexed. Now, there
is a file called .glimpse_filters where you can tell glimpseindex not to
index those lines of a file written in .glimpse_filters.
I was searching the web for example configurations of .glimpse_filters
and could not find anything. Does anybody know, how to configure this?
Thank,

Hello,
my problem is: I have a 17 GB harddisk, partitioned like this:
hda1: 60 MB Swap
hda2: 1GB Suse Linux
hda3: 1GB Redhat Linux
hda4: 14,... the rest
I would like to be able to switch remote between these two operating
systems, because this PC is administered remote and does not have a
floppy or keyboard. If Suse is booted it is no Problem to edit the
lilo.conf that way, that Redhat is booted. If I then booted Rehat and
try to write lilo taht way, that Suse is booted again, I always get to
message, that lilo is not able to be written because of the 1024
cylinder limit, although I put the redhat kernel on the Suse partition.
One solution is a course to create one kernel for both, btu there has to
be another solution.
Someone told me that there is the possibility to tell lilo, which system
is booted the next time, but I can't find this.
I hope that someone can help me.

There is a C++ grammar, as well as lexical conventions, in Appendix A of
Bjarne Stroustrup's "The C++ Programming Language" Third Edition,
published by Addison Wesley. ISBN 0-201-88954-4
There is an SQL grammar in the Lex and Yacc book by Oreilly.

Hi,
I want to learn something more about web servers/ftp servers etc. I have a cable
modem with a static IP, installed a pop server (not for sure) a web server and
an anonymous ftp server, and I want any user to receive mail, like
john@[ip-address]. I use RH6.0, Netscape and my hosts file looks like:
127.0.0.1 localhost
194.85.238.82 local.domain mail.domain local
Is this the correct way to do such a think? Should I use a DNS server,
and how? I already read the howto's like NET-3, ethernetcard, etc., but they
where not of much help.
My apache web server and the ftp server worked already after installation. Very
simple! Only my mail isn't working (yet). I installed the imap*.rpm package, and
I uncommented the pop and imap lines from /etc/services. The ipop3d and imapd
files are available in /usr/sbin.
I've done a telnet mail.domain 110 and the message was OK... ready.
What's the next step?
Surfing on the web isn't a problem either.
Should I setup Netscape with a POP server or with a IMAP server? Where is the
incoming mail located? Should I provide Netscape with this info? Can I send
messages with my own mail server?
Sorry for such a newbie question, but we all have to learn it!
Cheers,
Newbie Jan from Holland

I've found the best solution is to use a TV/video capture card, which
can capture (with the right software) up to 30 frames a second 640x480
resolution. This is good enough for editing and putting back to tape
(if you have a large enough hard disk).
