It was a joke, son. Linus has gone on record repeatedly as an advocate of
choice who wants people to be able to walk into a store and get Windows,
MacOS, Linux, or whatever.

No, it's a lilo option. It disables the execution of the HLT
instruction when the system is idle. That would definitely make the
CPU run hotter, but since Win95 (I think) doesn't use the HLT
instruction it shouldn't run any hotter than that.

I'm a proud owner of a Magic Mercury3D TGA accelerator card from
Skywell featuring the rendition V2200 chipset :(
Unfortunately this card/chipset does not appear to be supported by X!
Although I can get Xserver VGA16 to work, but I need truecolour or at

First video: Generic VGA (or unknown SVGA)
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, you'll have to re-install at this point to do a proper multi-user
install, but when you do run the setup as root with the /net option.
This does a network install. At this point, log on as the user you plan
to have running StarOffice(make sure that user has registered and
recieved a key first) and run the setup program. That's the nickel
overview, there is a .pdf file that explains the whole process but
remember that you want to do a network installation and then
workstation(?) installations for each user. This is the way I've done
it, even though I'm the only one using it because it lets you keep the
software out of the /home directory tree, and it works great!
Enjoy!

I Had the same problem with the compiler warning message with printk.
I have "set version information on all symbols for modules" turned on
in the kernel. (you probably do too)
check CONFIG_MODVERSIONS in /usr/include/linux/autoconf.h it will be
#define'd and set to 1
1.) you can turn "set version information" off and recompile the kernel
(not the easiest choice).
2.) make sure you have <kernel.h> included AFTER includeing <module.h>
and <modversions.h>, since kernel.h
has the prototype for printk(), and the compiler or pre compiler
doesn't know do do any thing with version
information on symbols for modules until it reads module.h, here
is what I mean:
#include <linux/module.h>
#if CONFIG_MODVERSIONS==1
#define MODVERSIONS
#include <linux/modversions.h>
#endif
/* now include kernel.h */
#include <linux/kernel.h>

Are you sure the error wasn't:

| or too many mounted file systems
Is /mnt a valid mount point that nothing else is using?

I too had a problem with a no-name brand SiS6326 card until I saw question
D4 in the xfree86 FAQ which reported the exact problem I was having. None
of the suggested solutions worked for me. (I'm running caldera openlinux
2.2) I ditched the 6326 card and got a used S3 Trio 64V+ based card with
2MB of memory for $10 and problem was solved.
Philip
I've reproduced the question from the FAQ below:
===================================================================
Q.D4- Why do I get a mostly black screen with my Diamond Speedstar A50 (SiS
6326)?
If you have a card with 8MB of video memory, first try telling the X server
that there is only 4MB present by adding the
following line to the Device section of your config file:
Videoram 4096
If you have a 4MB card, or if the above line doesn't help, try adding the
following line to the Device section:
Option "nolinear"
A drawback with this option is that colour depths higher than 8bpp can't be
used, but that is better than nothing.
If you see problems when moving windows with KDE, try the following:
Option "no_pixmap_cache"
These problems should be fixed in the next release.

There are a number of solutions to this (many previously posted) but my
question is this: is an ISP that either lies to you or doesn't seem to
understand the very basics of DNS one that you really want to be doing
business with? Tell them you think they're incompetent and go somewhere
else.

Subject: Re: Another WM is running
Date: Wed, 11 Aug 1999 04:30:48 GMT
I'd just like to get this straight right now. You've got the X server
running on NT, and you're just remotely connected to the linux box via a
telnet session or something. X servers on non-*nix boxes tend to have their
own window managers, so you won't need to start up a new window manager
from the linux box if you're just sitting at your NT computer. All you need
to do is make sure your DISPLAY environment variable on your linux box,
when you log on, is set to your NT X server. If you're using bash as your
shell (csh, tcsh, etc. are all a little different), just do this:
export DISPLAY=nt.box.ip.add:0.0
In your telnet session, you can just do this to check your display
settings:
echo $DISPLAY
that should output you NT server's X display. Now, if your display
environment variable isn't set up properly, you'll actually be starting X
and your window manager on the linux box, but things won't display on your
NT server. You can still run a window manager from your linux box and have
it display on your NT terminal, but you've got to make sure that your NT X
server doesn't already have its own window manager running. That's probably
where you're running into the core dump.
Once you've logged into the linux box from NT and your environment
variable for your display is set, you should be able to run an xterm from
the terminal you're logged in from and it will display on your NT
workstation. Hope this helps a little, I'm a bit confused about the problem
you've stated here, but at least this is a bit o' info...
The important thing to remember about X is that it was designed to run
apps both locally and on remote displays, and that window managers just
make the things look pretty. Everything you run from the terminal is just a
client app to your X server, and that X server can be located anywhere in
the world, theorectically...

They rag on LiNUX as being made by a beer-guzzling Fin, while they

If you don't click into directories, etc, but just insert the directory
location in front of the file name, you should have no problems. Just
takes a little practice/getting used to.

It's a kernel module, but, no longer distributed in the main kernel
tarball. You'll have to locate it and patch the kernel. Make sure you
read the documentation that should come with it.

I would have to buy a SCSI card too.
How can I guarantee that a SCSI scanner I pick will work with the SCSI card I
pick?
I have had difficulties getting an HP scanner to work with an Adaptec 2940.
It works fine with the HP card.
I don't want to have to install a different SCSI card for each device.
