Hi
I am using Suse 6.3 / Samba 20.06 on our file/prinserver. Recently we
changed fron the BSD-printspooler to LPRNG because we had performance
problems.
Now, when a user starts several printjobs ion a short time, only the
first one is printed, the rest is just lost!
What causes this, anyone has the same problems?
How can this be solved?

I started using my computer this morning, to find it was running very
slowly.
When I ran top, I found the load average was 30 and it was running loads

Is this a bug in SuSE6.4? I've recently upgraded from SuSE6.0, and I've never had
this problem before.
Is there a fix for this, apart from "kill -9"?

Dear all,
I just want my linux box as the collector which will collect the routers
and switchs messages. As I know, all the routers and switchs will use the
local_7 as their default facility. But according to the linux man page about
syslog.conf, linux it's self will use the local_7 as the system use only. So
If I want to collect the router's messages in my linux box, how can I do?

Most people using SCSI (such as myself) tend to opt for the 'many
partitions' method -- for servers and high-end workstations, it makes
things easier, *aside from lilo/BIOS limits* to have a small root
partition, thpically 64meg. This makes things easier to deal with
things like recovery in the case of various sorts of disasters. With a
64meg root file system at the start of the disk, it is virtually certain
that this partition will be way under the 1024 cyclinder.

Don't do that then.
You have to use a new address book format for 4.72, as I recall.
Create it from scratch and transfer a few addresses across by hand.
In any case, try starting from scratch (i.e. mv .netscape .netscape.old)
just to see where the problem is.

I used to have a corrupted address book that crashed my NS4.61. The only
way to solve this seemed to be deleting the abook and restoring from a

You need to tell kppp or the Red Hat Dialer whether you want it to use
script-based login or PAP/CHAP style authentication. By default, the
Red Hat dialer (which actually calls wvdial) will attempt to use the
former unless you check the advanced option `let pppd do all
authentication'. Kppp requires you to choose between PAP, CHAP, and
script.
On the other hand, it's possible that you have been authenticated
(have a look in /var/log/messages - if there's a record of your
machine being allocated a local IP address then you _are_
authenticated) but you are unable to contact to any machines because
you have specified no name server. You do need to enter DNS IP
numbers in the appropriate boxes, or else you will only be able to
contact other machines by IP number.

Subject: Linking directories and NFS

I have a network of diskless workstations. Everithing runs fine (...)
but now on the server I have a FULL copy of each directory tree
wich is than mounted on the workstations, which is not the most
elegant solution.
My goal is to save server disk space by making a shared use of
the /lib /sbin and /bin directories.
I tried 2 solutions:
1) linking the /lib /sbin /bin directories in the WS tree to the
server /lib /sbin /bin
- doesn't seem to be possible (even with the ln -d and ln -F commands)
and I get "Operation not permitted"
- if I use ln -s I can make the linkings on the server but
when I mount the / directory on the Workstation I can't
see /sbin and /lib and /bin
2) mount separately on the WS the /lib /sbin /bin exported by the
server
- the problem here is that during the boot process the WS
can't obviously fint the init program and execute it.
- how can I make a minimal system in order to run init which
is than "over-mounted" by the real /lib /sbin and /bin dirs ??
Any contribution will be highly appreciated.

I too had this problem..
I found some info at the redhat site looking in the errata mail list.
The bad news is it seems to be a problem related to the AMD K6-2 400
or 450 processor (per the redhat site). Some people have upgraded their
bios and have had no problems.. Other people have had no problems what
so ever. Me, I upgraded my bios, no good, changed cpus, no good.
changed to a pentium 133, not one problem yet.. except for speed :(
Read the RH errata list maybe by now somebody has come up with a fix

I did an install on jakarta-tomcat to work on some java server pages.
However, the documentation says that tomcat as a stand alone web server
is much slower than apache. There is a way to integrate it with apache,
and I managed to follow the documentation up to a certain point. Does
anybody know how to check to see if it's working with apache? If so,
where should I begin to troubleshoot (documentation is scarce on this).

I dont' think session info saves things like windows metrics, only what apps
or windows were open when you shut down and environmental stuff.
What you want to do is right click on the title bar of a window, click on
Attributes from the popup menu, and from there you'll have your selection of
all, position, size, etc.
That will save attributes for that window.
It would be nice if I knew how to do that in KDE tho ;-)

Slackware 3.2 & 4.0 and it always gave this message. As the documentation
advises, simply create a file named me in the control directory, mine is in
/var/qmail/control/me. It needs only one line, that is your canonical name
which you gave to your computer upon setup and is the same as found in
/etc/hosts file. Mine, for example, is ejohnson.elj.org.
Incidentally the faqs file has lots of information in it, but you may have
to also use the man files (simply look at them in that directory) for some
items. Feel free to email me if you need any more information on my setup.
Won't promise I can answer :), but will tell you about my computer.

Subject: Problem setting up NTP server

We're trying to set up an RH6.2 NTP timesync server here at work, and we get
the NTPd running, but exactly how would we go about getting it to
specifically look at COM1 for the incoming timesync signal ?

In fact, every time I run rm it just hangs there consuming my cpu until
I zap the process.

First off, make sure your font color is not set to your background color.
Second, if you have "transparent" background set to on, turn it off. (not
sure konsole supports this, but it can cause problems with gnome)

Have you compared this to vmware, and if so, do you like win4lin better ?
