Generally userland binaries that aren't packaged for a distribution
belong in /usr/local or /opt. The directory /bin is reserved for
important binaries necessary to the system, while /usr/bin is
reserved for the binaries packaged for a particular distribution.
Of course, if you package them for a distribution, then they should
go in /usr/bin or /usr/X11R6/bin. You might want to look at the
Linux File System Standard on where things should live.

I use a Epson Stylus Color 600 (should be very similar to 500). I've been
configuring the printer for a couple of times, for RH4.0, 4.2, 5.0, 5.2,
6.0, FreeBSD, etc. I never had any problem (or pain) to make it work, and
I don't even
remember anything extra I need to do. Why not just go to control panel and
use
the printer configurator? May be u r a Linux guru, for me, after many
years of unix/linux experience, i still find the command you are using
intemidating.
good luck.

Hi,
make a telnet to port 119 (nntp). After the connect, you can

You could try something like

setserial /dev/ttySx uart 16550A port 0x378 irq 7

Where /dev/ttySx is an unused one of /dev/ttyS[0-3] on your system. Port
0x378 and irq 7 are for the parallel port.

Hi,

I am having some trouble connecting to my ISP with kppp. I've only recently
upgraded to RH 6.0, and the same configuration that worked perfectly in 5.2
doesn't seem to start pppd. It waits 30 seconds "starting pppd" and then
does a timeout. I've tried "xhost +" but even that didn't help. Really
appreciate anyone who could help. Thanks.

I use the editor jed which was supplied with Slackware. You can configure it
several different ways, mine of which is very like emacs. Another text
editor which might be more pleasing to you is joe. Both are small and fast.
With jed configured with emacs keystrokes it has many of the features and is
quite powerful and blazingly fast.

I am wondering if the following can be possiblydone in RPM (Anyone who
has ever installed an RPM package in a local directory, i.e. /home/local
will certainly like find the answer to this question):

Is it possible to have a separate rpm database in different directory
(i.e. /home/local/var/lib/rpm) for the locally installed rpm binary
packages so that an upgrade to or newly installation of the Linux
distribution will not destroy or damage the local rpm database?

How does linux (or maybe bash?) know which directories to look in for
library files when it loads up a program? On other systems it seems to be
done by setting the LD_LIBRARY_PATH enviroment variable but in linux this
has no effect. Surely I don't have to place new libraries in either /lib
or /usr/lib because these are the only ones it looks in and this can't be
changed?

I modified .slrnrc. Set the hostname and username. Then I set
editor_command to pine which is easier for me to use. I also set
save_posts and save_replies to News/My_Posts. I uncommented the line
about using sendmail.

I created a file called My_Post in my home News directory. This was after
I got the message that it couldn't save when I tried to post. duh!

Then use P to post or f to followup (reply to) a message. Write the
message. I had trouble using the default VIM because it wasn't wrapping.
I'm just not familiar with it. So write it, save it, and then you are
back to slrn and it asks if you want to post. Say yes and it posts.

I think that was it.

Also, I'm sorry I found out about alt.test too late. Lesson learned.

It looks like your trying to mix versions 6.4 with versions 6.5.
Bad idea. First remove all of that version 6.4 stuff and then
install the 6.5 items. Then read the docs for configuring it.

Whilst attempting to install a device driver module for an ISDN card
(eicon BRI 2M) the make modules part of the relevant Makefile generates
a rash of errors (...macro '_set_ver' used with just one arguement...).
Not having used loadable modules before I hadn't notice that the make
modules part of the kernel compilation also fails in the same way.

I have recently upgraded the kernel on my RedHat 5.2 to 2.2.9 (a
prerequisite for the ISDN driver apparently). I have also upgraded the
various packages required for 2.2.9 (
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/kernel-2.2/kernel2.2-upgrade-3.html )
and can confirm that these are installed.

I also get a rash of unresolved external when I run 'depmod -a 2.2.9'.

I don't really know what I'm doing here !

Any ideas ?

Thanks in anticipation

For NFS-mounted directories there is a nice little program called mirrordir.

I set up Red Hat Linux for my mom. She's learning it quite quickly and is
already a pro at some stuff.

My dad and girlfriend are both more Windows type people, but my dad hates
Microsoft. He tolerates Windows just because he's a programmer and is tied
to the platform.

My first computer was a Commodore 64. What an awesome computer. I still
bring it out and play with it sometimes. After that, I had various IBM
compatible systems, a C128, and an Amiga. Somewhere in there, I also had
an Apple IIe compatible computer called a Laser 128. I think it survived
a lawsuit from Apple, but I could be wrong. I even had a Panasonic XT
that was sooo IBM compatible, it got sued by IBM. Ah, the good old days
of dual 360K floppies and a 20 meg MFM hard drive...

Now, I'm running on a dual Pentium III 450 with SCSI3 drives and 256 megs
of memory. It only cost about $2500 to put together, too. 'Course, it
took me about a year to replace the Celeron 300A motherboard, cheap EIDE
drives, low end 15" monitor, and tiny mid-tower case.

Who needs a car when you've got a high end computer?
