Hi,
Well, you can download the sources and compile them for yourself, but if
you are new to Linux I wouldn't recommend it. The distributions have
precompiled binaries for easy upgrading. Which distribution do you use?

The way I understand it is that the XFree86 server currently included in
most linux distributions does not support the Trident Cyber9525. However,
the latest version - 3.3.4, released on 7/21/99 and available at
www.xfree86.org , does.

DSL router would work as any other router, and there is nothing to configure

Many happy greetings,
I downloaded a whole bunch of stuff (using the LAN @ work), including
Slackware 4.0 and burned it onto a CD-R using Win98 and Adaptec's software
to create an ISO9660 disc w/ Joliet extensions. The burn seemed to come out
fine, but when I view the contents on my Linux machine, all of the files
without file extensions (such as README) have a dot appended to the end. Of
course the dots don't show up on a Windows machine. Is there a bug in this
kernel that makes the dots show up on CD's with Joliet extensions? Besides
being annoying, it renders Slackware's setup program unable to read the
tagfiles to install the packages.
On a related note, when I mount this CD at boot-time, I get the message:
"Unable to load NLS charset ISO8859-1 (nls_iso8859-1)"
That's all I have for now. I'd like to know the answer before I go through
the hassle of compiling a new kernel or recreating the CD.
Thanks

Bad example. There's a CERT Advisory against wu-ftpd-2.4.2,
dated this March. If Nike knew what they were doing they would
have upgraded to 2.5.0.
This FTPd was shipped all over. It was in Red hat and Debian.
Washington U stopped maintaining it and their final release was
buggy, and they didn't tell their mirror sites.
See ftp://ftp.wu-ftpd.org/ for the current version.
I don't use Sendmail nor certain other things, so it's been the
only daemon I've had to replace due to security concerns.

I have been trying to get CD burning software running on my RedHat 6.0
box. I have compiled and installed XCDRoast without any problems. My
burner is an ATAPI BTC 2x6x2. I only run IDE drives. I have looked at
many documents and have seen references to disabling Generic IDE Support
and Enabling SCSI Host emulation. Sometimes documents say I can use
SCSI host emulation and leave Generic IDE Support other statements
conflict with that.
I have at this point entered a line in linux.conf of...
hdc=ide-scsi
My original problem remained unchanged. The software works fine but it
does not see my writer as a writer it sees at as a reader.
I should mention that when I installed linux did not add the writer to
fstab automagically. I added the line to fstab of...
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrw iso9660 noauto 0,0
I appreciate any feedback...

I took a computer architecture course where the tenured professor
gave a handwaving mathematical proof by notation that it is impossible
to build a CPU supporting nested interrupts in a way that the ISRs
are oblivious to one another. (I.e., all CPUs must be like Intel's, where
each ISR must save processor state before doing any useful work.)
I'd just come back from an internship where I'd implemented a CPU
where, at the machine language level, each interrupt level had a register
set to itself. We'd done what the learned professor had proved impossible.
I made the mistake of arguing with this phony expert
in class. Aced all the exams and got a C in the course.
Don't argue when your professor teaches bullshit; graduate and make
more money than he does by your second year out.

He can cheat by dropping a few vowels and using a three letter extension.
If he or she has space left over, they might even throw in the digits

unpleasantly
can be quite succinctly expressed as
unplsn32.tly
The 32 is needed as reassurance that this isn't 16 bit DOS or Windows anymore.

Probably there is something preventing the kdm or xdm from starting up.
Look in the log files to see if there is any indication or try starting
it manually with
/etc/init.d/kdm start
and seeing what it complains about.

The problem is that most consumers use MS Windows and get ``free'' drivers with

availability of which affects only users of operating systems they don't even

Goto http://www.xfree86.org for a mirror (or the main site) then uncompress
all 3 source files which will make a directory called "xc". Then run:

then run xf86config to make the config file

You use the code, you have to GPL, you link, you can use whatever
license you want.
So, I grab libguile source and hack it up. If I distribute, gotta GPL
it, without or without the exception. If I write a web server and
want to link against libguile to support server side scripting, I can
do that and release the webserver under whatever license I please.
That is my understanding of it, and the only thing that is foggy there
is wether or not I have to have the exception in my "work based on
guile". As far as my "work using/linking guile" I have no
restrictions.

The unix interface to serial communications devices is weird but
well documented. Start with the Linux Programmer's Manual chapter 3

man termios
Also look at the manual entry for setserial.

Check the "drive geometry" reported by BIOS, Win-98 FDISK, Win-NT FDISK,
and Linux fdisk of cfdisk. This kind of thing can happen if they do not
match exactly. *ALL FOUR SYSTEMS MUST AGREE* on the number of heads,
cylinders, and sectors per track.
Red Hat Disk Druid has been reported to get a different "drive geometry"
than the other three systems. If your system is like that, do not
let Disk Druid create a partition table or "initialize" partitions.
Instead, use a Linux Rescue Disk, a commercial partition tool such as
Partition Magic or System Commander, or Microsoft FDISK, to create the
partitions where you will install Linux. *Then* boot Red Hat's
installation, and tell it to install on the partitions you have already
prepared.
You may be able to use the Red Hat boot diskette for a Rescue Disk.
Instead of letting their "user friendly" install program run, get a
shell and run cfdisk or fdisk.

The last time I pulled an SDRAM sheet down from Micron
(http://www.micron.com/ mti/msp/html/datasheet.html or something like
that) they didn't list anything *slower* than 100 MHz. However the app
notes for a development board I've been using claim you ought to use
a faster grade than you calculated if it's up on a DIMM, due to the
signal flight times. I wouldn't bet money on your particular case,
but in general faster RAM than you need will always work.
(That's because logic designers cannot count on chip delays; sometimes
no slow chips come out of the factory so they mark some fast ones slower
than they really are just to make the orders and preserve the price
premium on the fast ones. A circuit designed for 7 ns RAM had better
work with 5 ns RAM because it might be all you can get...) Just make
sure everything else about it (supply voltage? buffered?) matches.

Depends. Pentium 2 comes with a big, industrial looking fan
shroud assembly and a cool diffraction picture ("hologram")
on the cover. AMD is in a dumpy looking pin grid array
covered up by a very ordinary-looking heat sink and fan.
So stick with Intel if you care a lot what the thing looks like.

What's easier under Linux I can't help with. But I would caution you that
if you are to far from the Telco for DSL then you are probably too far for
a relaible v.90 connect. It will connect slow or drop you. It may
sometimes connect at an ok rate (45333) but then give you SH*T for
throughput.
In your kind of environment if you choose modems stay away from the Lucent
chip. It is more likely to fail the connect near the max distance. On the
otherhanda Rockwell will connect at a higher speed but then throughput will
suck. If you do anything try a USR/3COM.
I hate 56k technology it really sucks!

Try lowering the refresh frequency. It sounds like Quake is
overloading your video card, which is extremely bad because it can a)
damage the card or b) blow up your monitor. Also try turning off the
power saving feature. For some reason Quake may be tripping that.
