I'm running Slackware Linux. I'm having problems with dump. When I run it
it gives me:

I use the same command on a RedHat box and hove no problems.

Done; thanks to your pointing me at the right log file, /var/log/secure
listed the very telling entries:
Aug 31 08:49:59 knrq in.telnetd[787]: connect from 127.0.0.1
Aug 31 08:49:59 knrq in.telnetd[787]: error: cannot
execute /usr/sbin/in.telnetd: No such file or directory
...which just leaves me wondering, how did in.telnetd get misplaced or
blown away? hack? careless whispers?
at any rate, I'm not sure what to move around/reinstall to rectify
this. /usr/sbin shows the tcpd binary, but not the in.telnetd service.
Should telnetd be in that directory? or is this some virtual file
mapping scheme that I haven't picked up on yet?
A thousand thanks for getting me this far, Stu

I saw a similar problem on a DC21143-based NIC when used with the Tulip
driver (in my case, the ping time was 1-2 seconds). Switching to the
De4x5 driver seemed to avoid the problem.

Red Hat (and perhaps Mandrake) puts the gnome/enlightenment commands
in .Xclients. I believe the Afterstep commands end up in .xinit or
something like that. This file is evaluated after .Xclients so if
there's anything in it, it overrides .Xclients commands.
Try deleting the later file.

Grep understands word boundaries. The ``-w'' option to grep causes
it to only match entire words. From the GNU grep man page:
-w, --word-regexp
Select only those lines containing matches that
form whole words. The test is that the matching
substring must either be at the beginning of the
line, or preceded by a non-word constituent charac-
ter. Similarly, it must be either at the end of
the line or followed by a non-word constituent
character. Word-constituent characters are let-
ters, digits, and the underscore.
The loop isn't necessary, since grep will happily search for
multiple patterns. One way is to place each word in a file
on a line by itself and then use ``grep -f file files_to_search''

Craig

Right. I imagine that when you print, it will be OK. The
ApplixWords program doesn't have a PostScript rendering machine
built-in, so it can't show you the image unless the file also
includes a bitmap. MS-Word has the same problem. (I generally
use LaTeX/xdvi and it knows how to preview PostScript.)
There is a utility called ps2epsi included with the ghostscript
package that will take a PostScript file, render it to a bitmap
using ghostscript and add the bitmap to the eps file (thus
making it an epsi file that can be previewed inside programs
like ApplixWords).
I haven't tried ps2epsi it yet, since I don't really have
anything that uses the preview image. But, the newest version
of ps2pdf that comes with Ghostscript 5.50 is much improved
over the one that came with 4.x. Since it now compresses
bitmap images, the size of the last PDF document I worked on
dropped from 700K to 30K with the new ps2pdf.
\begin{ObEditorial}
I'm more convinced that ever that LaTeX/xdvi/dvips/ps2pdf is
the easiest and fastest way to product the best looking
documents. (Though I'm still surprised when I send somebody a
PDF file and they don't know what to do with it.) Just remember
to use the [times] package -- pdf files generated with CMR
fonts will work, but the reader won't be able to scale the
fonts, so they'll look crappy. If you use standard Adobe
fonts, the viewers will do a much nicer job, and I was happy
to find out that it wasn't the Adobe fonts that make MS-Word
output look crappy, it was MS-Word!

Subject: kernel NULL pointer on old 486
Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1999 15:22:35 GMT
Please beat me over the head if this is obvious -- but I'm running
Linux on an old 486 (AMD-120, PCI motherboard) and experiencing
periodic faults in user processes. I'm using it mainly as a NAT box
for ADSL, and it works fine in that capacity. When it screws up is
when I log in and attempt to run programs -- it'll give me periodic seg
faults, and eventually hang the kernel. Rebooting seems to clear it
up, for a while.
I have RedHat 5.0, kernel 2.0.36-3, latest libc, glibc & ld-so from
redhat/updates.
Could it be bad RAM/cache? Is there any way to test or diagnose this?
Or should I blow $60 and get a new 486?

The directories that appear empty on your NFS client are probably
separate file systems. The Solaris NFS server (like knfsd on Linux) does
not allow you to cross server mount points. You will have to mount these
file systems separately.

Do I need a special set of drivers to make use of this acceleration on

I had a similar problem on my 486 when I tried to install a second HD. The
HD turned out to be defective. I ended up going on eBay and buying a HD of
about 500+ meg (the largest you can use on a 486 with the older BIOS that
most have). This worked fine and only cost me about $40. I'd suggest you
try to do the same thing (unless it turns out to be a controller problem,
which I would know nothing about). You will need at least 500 meg to get
the full enjoyment out of Linux on a 486 anyway.
Good luck!

I had something similar that turned out to be my machine entering

I don't know exactly how to do it, but I can tell you where to start.
First, if you change a passwd as superuser, I don't think it applies those
constraints. I.e., superuser can set whatever passwd he wants. Second, PAM
is what checks the password. Look at the PAM docs. It's probably as simple
as editing a few files in /etc/pam.d .

This may seem like a stupid answer to you, but look for one called

There's one way to do this: returning a local variable by reference from
a function. On the other hand, it is possible to point a pointer to
a variable that goes out of scope within a function while the pointer
is still valid.
The solution is simple: never return a local variable by reference from
a function.

Assuming that all words in file[uniquewords] are
one per line with no spaces or tabs at the end of each
line ... you couldtry:
if [ ! `grep '^'$i'$' uniquewords` ]
There must be a simpler method though .....
Can anyone explain when you would use a double quote
and when a single one?

grep " $i " uniquewords
Notice how I have the space before and after what I'm grepping for.
Will this work?
Or, if your list of words is a file with each word on a separate line,
this would work:
grep "$i " uniquewords.
In short, try using spaces.
