I have a Linux 2.0.33 email server. My SP also set it up as a web-server
& I have set-up a basic home-page.

I would like to create a password protected area on the server for company
staff, wherefrom they
can obtain information/documents/spreadsheets/downloadable files. What is
the easiest way to do this
& do I need to install any other software ?

Please email me - [EMAIL PROTECTED]

But how much free memory do you have when SO is open. Just 'cause your not
doing anything - there may be system activity which causes paging - on the other
hand I may just be mad.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

A cohort and I are thinking of starting an open-source project,
specifically a Java-based Home Automation system. I use a Linux-based
system for development, he uses a WinNT based system. Initially what
we'll need, at a minimum, is a CVS server. Unfortunately neither of us
has a static IP. Are there any resources like this available for
open-source projects from third parties?

We can't be the first people to deal with this, how do others handle
it? I'm aware of the linux-kernel model; everyone sends their diffs to
Linus and he puts them in, or doesn't, but that's too much of a
headache for what is now just a two-person project.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Is this happening from root or from another user account? If connecting from a
non-root account /usr/sbin/pppd must be assigned the appropriate permissions
for the non-root account to invoke it. Otherwise, kppp croaks with the 'ppp
died unexpectedly' error.

The main one I've seen is a tendency to use the newest features, which
are not supported in other compilers. Not much code written in C++ is
portable. (Using the newest features can be amusing, but if you want
people to port the code, it's not so amusing).

I also have had problems with the tulip driver for Mandrake Linux
6.0(which is based on RH 6.0). My system never recognizes it for my
DECchip PCI ethernet card. I have tried to get a driver from
http://www.bmen.tulane.edu/~siekas/tulip.html, but the file is corrupted.
You have to page through many pages, but about 70% of the way through the
file, the data is garbled for about a third of a page. I'm wondering if RH
used this when they put their distribution together, which naturally was
carried over to Mandrake Linux? Greg Siekas says this about this driver
site, "Entire site is offline while I make necessary changes. It will be
back once I have time to redo everything and test the latest drivers in
multiple configurations. Sorry for the inconvience."
I would say that our best bet at this time is just to purchase an
ethernet card that uses any other driver which is exactly what I plan to
do this weekend.

Best of Luck,
Doug Craig

Come on - you must admit - Tom has a point.

If the guy has enough knowledge to find the Linux newsgroups - he should be
able to find info on the net himself. Its not like Linux is hard to find -
over 365 thousand hits with a search for Linux on Infoseek.

Maybe he could have put it a little less sarcastic - but that's not the point
(besides there is always room for sarcasm and I found his reply most amusing).

As for calling him a d*ck for expressing his opinions..........Well I think
that speaks for itself. It takes time and energy to come up with amusing
sarcasm - how long did the d*ck comment take? ;->

I agree with your comments about getting both sides of the coin by getting
review from non geeks - however don't forget. If they are not geeks then they
don't really understand everything we are trying to do and often get the wrong
end of the stick :-)

Flame away - I'm in asbestos underwear.

The desired man page should be in /usr/local/man/man1, not in
/usr/local/man.

If so, what format is the ksh man page in? What does "file /path/to/ksh.1"
say? If it's human-readable, what does the beginning look like?

If file(1) says something like "troff or preprocessor input text", you
ought to be able to format it manually with a command something like
"man /path/to/ksh.1" or "man -l /path/to/ksh.1". Also, most nroff man
pages can be read with "nroff -man /path/to/ksh.1 | less -s".

You might want to make sure that the man index database is up-to-date.

I don't think so. (1) The need for /sbin/update came back in 2.2.9,
I believe. By 2.2.12 it had again gone away. (2) I don't know whether
the kernel hackers have actually nailed down this whole problem yet.

If your kernel doesn't need /sbin/update, then the daemon is just
supposed to exit more-or-less immediately. There should instead be a
kernel thread called "kupdate", I believe (with PID 3 or so).

Corrections welcome.

Are you sure your cradle is connected to serial port 1 (cua0)? If not,
try linking /dev/pilot to /dev/cua1 for serial port 2.

Hi all,

Here's a chance to air your views in print. I'm writing a feature
article for the first edition of Linux Answers, a new magazine about
to be launched in the UK by Future Publishing
(http://www.futurenet.co.uk). I've been a journalist for the past 18
years, and have spent the past four years as features editor of .net
magazine (www.netmag.co.uk), but I haven't used Linux.

The feature is an overview of the Red Hat IPO and the Linux
community's reaction to this. I've read a lot about it (well, I got
through 66 pages I printed out, and that seemed to only skim the
surface of these issues), and I've been asked to look for people on
both sides of the fence - happy and disgruntled. Anyway, I'll start
with a few basic questions and I'll reply to the people who give the
most interesting answers! (no lying!)

First, I'm going to have to cover some old ground and go from there.

1. Did you succeed in getting shares? Or were you sidelined by E
Trade's conditions?

2. Do you think you should have been given shares without having to
pay cash upfront?

3. Has Red Hat tried to compensate any disgruntled Linux users who
missed out?

4. Do you think Red Hat should exist at all? Why?

5. Do you think Red Hat does enough to keep a common standard
available, or does it dominate and have too much influence in saying
what the standard is?

6. Is Red Hat trying too hard to dominate the marketplace and keep
other players out?

7. (this is a basic one, but I'd like it answered in your own words)
Why is the concept of "Open Source" so important to Linux users?

Feel free to skip any questions you don't want to answer, and to add
extra comments you think are relevant. Could you please get back to me
within two working days?

Thanks all,
Cotton Ward

I am wondering if there is anyone out there that has
been succressful in getting Real Player (ver 5.0 or 5.2 Alpha)
to work in Caldera Opn Linux 2.2 ???

If so, may I ask how you configured it. I have tried several
Linux versions of Real Player all with negative results.

Any help will be most appreciated,
