Hi,

Forget the previous posting, it was my fault:
I stripped the modules and 'cause of that they didn't worked any more.

Hallo,

Beim Upload geht's schnell.

Hello everybody,

I have some problems using the gnu tar program on RedHat linux 6.2 with the --exclude
directive and
with --new-volume-script directive as well
It does not do what I want.

For the first directive (--exclude) I want to exclude a whole directory ; so I write
--exclude=/exclude/this/one but It does not work !! I had a look in the man pages and
in the info
pages but I dont understand quite well.
Could someone give me an example for excluding an entire directory like
/this/is/a/directory/I/want/to/exclude.

For the --new-volume-script, tar seems to not execute my script. Has someone ever used
this tar
directive and how ?
An example would be very useful for me.

Thanks

But some Linux users also work with other flavors of unix too, and
anyone who has ever used a find command that does not default to
the -print option will develop the habit of typing out the -print
every time.

It is not a bad habit to have.

I ran into this problem with RedHat7 after I recompiled the kernel, even
though I didn't touch anything having to do with file systems. My vfat
partition mounted fine via /etc/fstab before I recompiled but after I
recompiled, it wouldn't mount, complaining about wrong major or minor
numbers.

I was never able to get an answer, so I went back to the default kernel
and it works.

emacsclient is a program that lets you connect to a running emacs to
edit a file. you have to start emacs first and put it into server
mode by typing (gnuserv-start) in the lisp interaction buffer or
putting it into your .emacs file

did you find emacs itself?

I don't even know if the default kernel support my USB-Mouse...and
SCSI-emulation...and my Matrox G400....the console looks much better
when I enable my G400 goodies

BTW: I'm using kernel 2.4.0. test9

OK, This I can help with as I use it *all* the time.. You just need to adjust
your syntax a bit.. This is what I use for my full system backup - it will
show you a working syntax:

tar czvf /dev/st0 / --exclude /proc --exclude /mnt --exclude /dev

That example uses tar to create a zipped archive file on my tape drive
(/dev/st0) from the root directory onward skipping all information in /dev
/proc and /mnt..

Hope this helps!

Date: 26 Dec 2000 20:18:27 GMT

Hi all,

I am trying to establish a SSH session from my windows machine (win98 Second
Edition) by using F-Secure SSH client version 1.0 from F-secure to a
RedHat Linux server version 6.1 running kernel version 2.2.18. The SSH server
running on the linux box is also from F-secure (datafellows 2.0.13). Everything
is properly configured on the server. However, I just can NOT connect to the
linux box (with password authentication). I can connect to the linux server
using ssh client from SecureCRT and a trial version of F-secure client version
4.3. In the sshd2_config file on the linux box, I set ssh to be compatible with
both ssh1 and ssh2. I kill the ssh daemon and restart the process but it does
not work.

Any ideas????
Many thanks.

Because that's not a kernel problem per se. It's your incomplete

If you want to use a projector, you will have the best luck using the
Framebuffer server, rather than the server designed for your chipset. The
framebuffer server uses Vesa DDC specs to generate the most appropriate
modelines, and as such is will work with any vesa compliant device,
including projectors. So, if your graphics chipset and the projector is
vesa compliant, then it will work. It is unnacellerated, and therefore
slow, however it does the job.

the framebuffer server for x3.3.x is called FBDev
the framebuffer driver for x4.0.x is called fbdev

X4.0.2 has introduced a new vesa driver that is supposed to be faster than
the fbdev driver, but I haven't tried it yet.

good luck

Also, if the list of excludes becomes cumbersome, you can do something like this:

tar -cvvf /dev/nst0 / -X /home/rj/nobackup
and then create a file named "nobackup" that contains the files and/or
directories to be excluded:
/proc/*
/dos/*
/usr/lib/*
/usr/share/*

As far as I know, this is not a kernel recompilation issue. What this
program does is forking (duplicating) itself an unlimited number of times,
allocating huge amounts of memory, file descriptors and so on.

If the system running this program doesn't implement resource limitation
based on users, limiting allocated memory, file descriptors, or maximun
user processes, many things can happen depending on the systems
configuration and physical/swap memoryavailable.

It would be helpful to know what you meant when you said "can't handle" in
your original post. It can mean a kernel crash, unability to carry any
other user process due to resource starvation, etc.
