I noticed that 'catch-22' behavior with every version of rpm since I
began using RH 5.0, then 5.1 (which came and went very quickly) followed
by 5.2 and then RH 6.0, which I ran at work. When I switched to SuSE
5.3 I noticed that rpm in that distro had the same problems, but YaST
bypasses it unless you install a package manually. Same with SuSE 6.1
and 6.2, which I now use. I replaced the RH 6.0 at work with SuSE 6.2.
YaST is a very nice system tool.

I have nearly a dozen distros setting on CDs in my desk drawer, but I've
settled on SuSE as the best one for me. I like the fact that they
tested the 1000+ apps on the 5 (now 6) cd and configured them to install
automatically on your system when you use YaST and select them from the
package list on the CD. All desktops (mainly fwwm, fwm95, KDE, GNOME
and some others) have the package on the menu and the environment is
setup with the appropriate variable assignments. When you uninstall a
package everything is appropriately undone for you. Very nice.

In my experience, nothing. It being detected -> it being assigned a device.

Well, the easiest way would be to put a data disk in the Yamaha and
try mounting it:

mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdr

where /dev/scd0 is my guess as to what device your cd-recorder is going
to be (scsi cd 0) and /mnt/cdr is the mount point. The cd-r may also
be at /dev/sr0. I'm running RedHat 5.2 upgraded to kernel 2.2.10, and
my teac cd-r56s is at /dev/scd0. When the mount succeeds and you can
see the data on the cd, you've found the right device. :)

One last bit of advice -- look into the excellent xcdroast package.
It is a front end to mkisofs, cdrecord, and a few other utilites and
makes mastering/copying/burning cd's very easy. Find it at freshmeat.net.

Good luck.

Running RedHat 6.0, I need to be able to compile and link the older a.out
executable format. I need to relink a proprietary app that I don't have
sources for.

The only option I have figured out is to build gcc to cross compile. I
have tried to do this but the build fails when the new gcc is used to
compile the libraries. (It can't find stdio.h and others, pointing it to
/usr/include moves on, but there are more problems later).

So, anyone have an idea how to do this? Is there an easier way? I'd be
glad to install any old/ancient distribution if I could find one that
would compile aout. I found an old Slakware that looked promising, but I
didn't get it to install in the first couple tries.

Thanks,
Shayne

Thanks for the reply Raymond - I resolved the problem only to find that
the images display in IE but not Netscape. The script searches a pre-
constructed text file (index.txt) and returns the result as HTML. I wanted
an image (gif or jpg) to appear at the end of each search hyperlinked
result line but kept getting the HTML showing the location as being the
scriptaliased cgi-bin and not displaying the image. I got it to display in
IE by putting a \ in front of file location in the img tag - <IMG
SRC=\myicon.gif>. Netscape displays the no image available icon and shows
its source as /cgi-bin/\myicon.gif (not the case with IE!) With Netscape
my error log says "script not found or unable to start" - the search
script is working ok apart from not displaying these images properly.
Any ideas?

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have a PC that's being used in a hospital running redhat linux 5.1.
At boot it launches tn5250 to connect to the as/400 on virtual terminal
1 as well as launching lynx on virtual terminal 2 to connect to a pager
gateway. The other day, I had to shutdown the paging daemon to
incorporate a change, and as the console is defined as tty1 the TN5250
session that is being used to admit patients was screwed up with the
messages printing to the console. How do I move the console to
somewhere harmless like tty4, so when I shutdown a daemon, I'm not
messing with a running session.

I'd appreciate any assistance.

Thanks,

All unlink(2) does is deallocate an inode from a filesystem.
This doesn't necessitate a disk write. My understanding is that
the device superblock is read into memory when its filesystem is
mounted and the freeing of the inode is done there. At some
point the superblock is locked and synced to disk, but I don't
know what criteria the kernel uses for that.

Ultimately the speed of an unlink probably depends on whether the inode
of the file to be unlinked is in the inode cache.

Kind regards,

Nicholas

An inode is just one resource associated with a file. There are also its
data blocks. These must be returned to a list of free blocks when
the file is removed.

Install Linux on G. Also LILO on G.

Boot Manager neither knows nor cares what OS is on that partition.

It should boot right up. Mine does.

Then you might want to change the title of G partition from OS2.

Oh, yeah--you have to mark the partition bootable.

If H was not booted before--but just held files, then you will need to
probably add an entry in boot manager when you put the system files on
and mark THAT partition bootable too.

If H was previously booted then just reverse ther references in my
advice.

I note that there is a module-info link pointing to
module-info-2.2.5-22 in my /boot directory.

Anyone know how much it matters, I'm in the process of trying out
2.2.12 and I was wondering if this is important.

I have the new kernel compiled, the modules are in the correct place,
the System.map file is where it should be and I just need to update
lilo.conf and run lilo. Is this module-info file important, or do I
just ignore it for now, it seems to be mainly text?

I think the important file is modules.dep which is created by a call to
depmod -a in one of the init scripts.

TIA

I have an xlib program that I compiled and ran under redhat 6.0.
In this program I have some code that allocates read/write colormaps
with:

  int status;
  status = XAllocColorCells(WindowMgr::display,
      WindowMgr::defaultColormap, False, aplaneList, PLANES,
      apixelList, PIXELS);

  cout << "status=" << status << endl;

Status is zero which is a failure. This call will not fail on Sun
Workstations running OpenLook. Why does it fail using the
Enlightenment and Window Maker window managers? Note that it will fail
on the OpenLook if Netscape is running. I don't have Netscape running
on the Linux box where it is failing. Something is hogging some X
resource that prevents the allocation.

Here is the crash:

status=0
X Error of failed request: BadAccess (attempt to access private
resource denied
Major opcode of failed request: 90 (X_StoreNamedColor)
Serial number of failed request: 12
Current serial number in output stream: 24

Eeeeek!
vi is so ancient, and hard to learn.
GXedit is very similar to windows notepad. You don't need gnome nor kde,
just need gtk libs to compile it. Binaries should be avail. for RedHat,
mandrake, perhaps for other distributions, too.

Yah, and InoculateIT made it to their list of top contributers.
Too bad InoculateIT is a robot, and can't appreciate the "honour". ;-)
