ESS (ensoniq) not to be confused with ESS Technologies in asia - who
manufacture a soundacard, but are in no way associated with ensoniq. It
had be baffled for months why the ensoniq drivers I had didnt work, until
I found out that ESS actually stoof for the latter mentioned manufacturer
;)

I could be going out on a limb here, but I would say that LINUX results
from a trimming of a powerfull O/S to fit a small space while MSwindows
results from the bloating of a less powerful O/S to fill all avaiable
space.

The /proc filesystem is created BY the system. It resides soley in RAM and
is there for the system to keep tabs on itself...
(In the early days of the 8 bits, all the computers had an area of RAM set
aside for system variables... This is the linux analogue of that, I think).

But SuSE 6.2 has just been released (which means it's currently the most up
to date distribution), and SuSE is very easy to install and has a far
superior manual covering much more than just the basic installation...
Also, SuSE is about half the price of Red Hat and has a LOT more software
included (currently 5 CDs worth, and one CD of source code)...

I never used it long enough to see any instability... It was just too

If you want a straight, simple text editor that runs as an X client application, you
can
try textedit or xedit. textedit uses GUI controls, while xedit uses a few simple
keystroke controls.

Hi!
It is maybe a stupid question, but i browsed the whole manpage an
didn't find a clue (maybe im blind):
How do I enter a character in "vi" by typing in its dec, hex or oct
value?
I want to add a formfeed (12, 0x0C, 014) to an ASCII-text - how can I?
Thank you in advance

I did just what you outline above, and just ignored module-info. All is
working just fine.

I think Nedit is a great text editor.

I'm running Linux PPC on a Blue and White Mac G3 and would be very hapy if I
could run a console on my small 14" and X on my 17"
I haven't seen anything on this anywhere but here, but could use a little
amplification.
Any ideas?

There isn't a "gnome" window manager to my knowledge.
You can start the gnome panel in any window manager by simply typing
"panel" (no quotes) in any x-term

Interesting. It's the same here: save something and Star Office
will consume all CPU time after it ...

... it saves well, it even works on, but producing maximum load
on the machine it isn't fun to work on :(( .
It's running under the SuSE 6.2 Distribution on a totaly reliable
machine (Kernel compilation runs through without any SIG-11
problems). Any idea?
So long,
Mark.

If you want to recompile your new kernel with the same options as an old
kernel, copy the .config file from the old kernel directory into
the new kernel directory.
Then instead of doing a make xconfig or a make menuconfig, do a
make oldconfig. The old options you had selected will automatically be
chosen. If there are new options, you will only be asked for those.
It's a major timesaver, you should try it.
And though you didn't specifically ask for it, when you find that you
have module problems with your new kernel, get a new modules package and
make sure you're not running kerneld.
