I personally like xjed myself. EMACS-like interface (though isn't as
functional), but lacks most of the bloat. gvim is nice though too :)

I had the same problem....

Try setting the dead time to 0. Dead time will automatically disconnect
a samba connection after x minutes of inactivity, in your case 30..

Try that... :)

Hi.
I've downloaded and installed gcc 2.95.1
But when I try to compile groff it claims that my C++ compiler doesn't
work properly.
I wrote a "Hello world" program and compiled it with g++ , when I try to
run is says :
/a.out: error in loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

this library is in /usr/local/lib directory.

Options used to compile gcc :
--enable-threads
--enable-shared

Thanks in advance

I'm a newbie too.

Yep. Sounds like lilo overwrote the MBR. The first thing you need to to is
read the Linux-NT-miniHowto. In there you will find something like this.
Don't trust me 100%, read it for the details

Here goes:
Use (run) linux Fdisk to mark the linux partition as non-bootable and then
mark the NT partition (HPFS) as the bootable. Then (and this is the part
I'm not sure about) use the NT disketts to rebuild the partition table (I'm
not sure if you can use a Win98 boot disk and do a "fdisk /mbr").

Brad:

First, drop to xterm and try "kppp"...if that doesn't work, then you may
not have installed KDE. To be sure, logout, then check the "Select" or
"Options" button on the log-in screen...under "Session", you should be able
to select KDE, if not, we're looking at some reinstallation.

To do this, you can either boot to Windoze (if you still have it installed)
and run the AUTOBOOT file, or mount the CD in RH and install the packages
from there. For me, it's easier to run AUTOBOOT, but that's just me.

Finally, I'm sure there's some other way to do it, but I don't have the
slightest clue what it might be.

Hope this helps...

Make sure /usr/local/lib is in /etc/ld.so.conf, then
try running ldconfig to rebuild /etc/ld.so.cache

if that doesn't work, try mv'ing them to /usr/lib/.

But Opera for Windows is still ALOT faster than Netscape (or IE). One thing
that really bugs me in Netscape is that when you step back to a previously
loaded page (just previously loaded), it still takes a second or two for it
to pop up. Its not rechecking the site or anything, its just that Netscape
takes longer to render a page. This NEVER happens in Opera.

I have tried setting the memory and disk caches to 20 megs (each!) and
Netscape is still slow. This is true in both Windows and Linux, on a
450MHz PII with 128MB RAM.

Besides, I'd gladly take a LARGER Opera binary if it meant I could get the
same speed from it as it currently does in Windows.

I was at Best Buy this weekend, hoping to buy Quake for Linux. (I

I found a mid-isle display of Corel WordPerfect for Linux, but no

I asked a droid where I might find Quake for Linux. He said the RPG
game isle. I said right, I saw the Quake software there, but no Linux
version. He looked at me like "what the hell was I bothering him when
I already knew where it was." So I made him take me in hand, so to

This wasn't meant to be particularly humorous or relevant, just
another fine example of droid in software stores.

I have found xfsft to be reliable. You'll need to compile a library with it, and
get a utility that makes a fonts.dir in your TrueType directory. ttmkfdir,
I think it is.

I've seen reports that cp -a /home/* /newhome will work, but I use

cd /home; tar cvpf - * | ( cd /newhome; tar xvpf - )

This is after creating an ext2 file system on the partition using
mke2fs, doing

mkdir /newhome

and mounting the partition on /newhome. When you're satisfied that the
files under /newhome are OK, you can

rm -rf /home

and then

mv /newhome /home.

You will then want to add a line to /etc/fstab to mount /home on bootup.

Agreed! I've used both Red Hat and SuSE and I think they're both
excellent. I just bought SuSE 6.2 for one reason; price. It was $29US
as opposed to $79US for the equivalent RH release. The biggest *single*
complaint (well, more of an observation) I have with either of them is
their documentation. For example.. setting the run level (so that X
displays on login rather than the 'standard' prompt):

- RH: Tells you exactly *what* to do to make this work early on in the
install docs. It doesn't tell you *why* until a bit later (heck, I
don't think RH 5.1 even told you *why* it worked that way).

- SuSE: Goes into *wonderful* detail right away about *why* X is
configured in SuSE the way it is, about run levels ,etc.. And then
tells you the *wrong* steps when you configure the run level
(fortunately I'm not a total Linux newbie and was able to figure out
what the SuSE docs where trying to tell me to do).

So there's my $0.02 on it... :-)

Hi,

I just installed Red Hat 6.0. I recompiled the kernel
trying to get the sound card running. It turned out
that there is a program that enables the sound card, so
the recompilation was unnecessary. However, when I tried
to run vi, I got the following:

  BUG IN DYNAMIC LINKER ld.so: dynamic-link.h: 57: elf_get_dynamic_info:
Assertion `! "bad dynamic tag"' failed!

This could be unrelated to the recompilation of the kernel.
Anyway, sounds like a serious problem to me. Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot.

The other advice you got is right.

Just a further aside: you don't mean automounting. You mean
you want the filesystem to be mounted when booting. Automounting
is a system whereby a filesystem is mounted only when needed.
It is used with remote filesystems and sometimes with floppies
or CDs.

Subject: SOLUTION: Personal LaserWriter NT on serial port
Date: Tue, 07 Sep 1999 22:02:45 GMT

I've got my Personal LaserWriter NT working on Redhat 5.1 via
serial port. Here's how to do this:

1. Connect a null-modem cable between the /dev/ttyS3 port and
the DB25 serial port on the printer.

2. Set the printer select wheel on the back to 6 to set the
printer to use RS422/RS232 9600 baud binary mode PostScript.

3. Power on the printer and the computer.

4. Use /usr/bin/printtool to add a printer with these attributes:

    Names: lp0|lw|Personal LaserWriter NT
    Spool Dir.: /var/spool/lpd/lp0
    File Limit: 0
    Printer Device: /dev/ttyS3
    Input Filter: *auto* - PostScript
    Suppress Headers: off

5. Click "Select" in the Input Filter section and make these
selections in the "Configure Filter" window:

    Printer Type: PostScript printer
    Resolution: 300x300
    Paper Size: letter
Printing Options: "Send EOF after job..." on
                        "pages per output..." 1
                        "Fix stair-stepping..." off

6. After saving and exiting printtool, you'll see this has been
    added to /etc/printcap

##PRINTTOOL3## LOCAL POSTSCRIPT 300x300 letter {} PostScript Default {}
lp0|lw|Personal LaserWriter NT:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp0:\
        :mx#0:\
        :lp=/dev/ttyS3:\
        :if=/var/spool/lpd/lp0/filter:

Well, all that works for me. I hope it works for you too.

Cheers....

How is it Microsoft's problem? Manufacturers have discovered a way to
sell modems for serious profit. They are to blame, not Microsoft.

If this system is for your playground system, you don't need more than 1 Linux
native partition. My personal Linux system just has 1 linux partition, 1 swap
partition and 1 windoze partition.

Subject: SCSI (sym53c416) & Afterstep help, etc.
Date: Tue, 07 Sep 1999 20:13:05 -0500

I recently installed COL 2.2 on my home PC as stand-alone desktop PC. I
have a Symbios 53c416 SCSI card which I removed prior to install to
assure no conflicts. I assumed it would not be supported. I see a
kernel module for the sym53c416 SCSI. Would I need to install card
first, reboot, then module, or reverse order or what?

Next: I'd like to try Afterstep or Windowmaker. If I wanted either of
these, where could I download them with the assurance I'd be getting
EVERY lib file, etc., that I need to install & run it successfully? Can
anyone help with this?

Still next (:p): Could anyone recommend a really good newsreader? The
KDE default one here isn't too stable for me, and I don't tremendously
like Netscape. In NT, I always use FreeAgent.

Thanks much for all your help.

Subject: Re: help:MS Proxy Client
Date: Tue, 07 Sep 1999 21:12:12 -0400

It's been over a year since I had to run my Linux box through a
MS Proxy Server (have since just run an extra cable to connect my
box to the other side of the firewall... fuck 'em!). I don't
remember what all went into it... but I DO remember that 95% of
my hassles were configuring the MS Proxy Server end rather than
my Linux client (if you don't have access/permission to touch the
MS machine, you're probably just screwed).

There seemed like a ton of stuff I had to do... but basically
what it all boiled down to was that SOCKS has to be running on
the NT machine. Not only WINSOCKS (or whatever MS calls it's own
little bastarized thing), but SOCKS. You must then configure
SOCKS in Netscape with the appropriate settings. Any app that
doesn't support SOCKS as a proxy protocol is probably going to be
unusable for you.

        Good luck!

Have you thought about my offer to pay you twice what you paid if
you don't like "The inmates are running the asylum"? You will find
a description of a typical software engineer that almost exactly
matches what you are saying above. I know. I felt the same way.
Finding a better way to relate to nontechnical users was. for me,
much like discovering structured top down programming after being
buried in my own spaghetti code; it made so much sense that I *had*
to change my ways. You really need this book. Double your money
back if you don't agree!
