Must not have any software installed on those Windows machines.
EDS's UNIX support for 15,000 Unix workstations spread all over
Michigan and the US is done by 20 administrators in ONE ROOM.
Conversely, a facility with a mere 1,000 Windows users on site
requires AT LEAST 20 Microsoft admins on site.

The "1>/dev/null" diverts "standard output" to /dev/null.
The "2>&1" diverts "standard error" to "standard output" which
is already being sent to /dev/null by the previous note.
By doing this ALL "output" and "errors" are sent to /dev/null.
The "()" groups the whole command and I/O diverts into a "job".
The ending "&" places that job in the background.

Yep. I've been using ReiserFS for all of my partitions except /boot for
a couple of weeks now on my laptop, no problems. (/boot is a special
case - see <URL:http://www.namesys.com/faq.html> for details.)
It's been shut down accidentally several times, and each time it

Also try linux -s at the LILO prompt. Should get you booted in single user
without a password.

Subject: Where's my memory?!
Crossposted-To: linux.redhat.misc

I have 128MB RAM in this Linux RH7.0 box. When I first bootup 'top' shows
that there is 47MB used already! That is without x windows.
After I run X for a while, with KDE, or sometimes just TWM ... 'top'
shows all 128MB is used!
I did a 'ps -aux' for both cases above and added up all the resident
memory and in both cases it doesn't wash out. Can someone tell me why?
Also, is that amount of memory being used on bootup normal? 47MB? Here is
a listing of all the processes running (via ps -aux) when my machine
boots up. What things do I not need?

I'm running slackware 7.1 using gnome and the sawfish window manager.
When you drag the selection loop in the root window, it leaves
behind bits of the selection lines. This doesn't happen when not
using gnome on the same X server setup. The graphics card in an
NVida Riva TNT Model 64. Has anyone else seen this? I can get rid
of them by just moving another window on top of the area and then
back off making it redraw that section of the root window.

It might.
Kppp is NOT the only way to connect using linux.
Personally, I use wvdial. This is a damned good dialer/ppp program.

I *think* wvdial will do that kind of stuff automatically...
Worth a try anyway.

I don't know if ** GNOME vs KDE ** is an age-old debate, but is there an
"official" web site or soure where I can learn about the differences
between GNOME & KDE? I have RedHat 7, so GNOME is the only thing I'm
used to, and I'm very happy with GNOME, but I'd like to explore other
options, out of curiosity. Before trying out KDE, I want to be an
informed user.
Where can I get some *objective* evaluation of both GNOME and KDE? An
objective analysys,... Have there been any magazine articles? Web
sites? etc,...

For Linux, there's the JPilot, which is better than the KPilot that
comes in KDE.
I personally have RedHat Linux 7, and I run VMWare 2 for Linux. I run
virtual Win98 within the VMWare virtual computer, and I sync using the
Windows version of Palm desktop.
If you don't have VMWare for Linux, then JPilot is a very good alternative.

There is a script, install-sendmail-5.3.1
that does basic setup. If you have mail queued, it sounds good-
do sendmail -q to send the queue.

I don't have a DNS server, I am connecting to the cable modem via DHCP on
the external interface. Is it why it caused the problem?

I have been running reiserfs on my laptop for a long time. I use SuSE which
(I think) funds reiser development and includes reiserfs patches in their
kernels and gives it as an option during install.
I use a small (32M) EXT2 /boot partition as I have had problems getting
Lilo to boot off of reiser.
My tests and experience show that reiserfs is about as fast and about as
space efficient as ext2. I have not had problems with data corruption.
Reboot times from a shutdown and a power-off vary by about 10 seconds on a
32G hard drive. The only fsck is on the tiny 32M /boot. (hey don't spell
check fsck in Knode if you are easily offended!). I wouldn't run my laptop
without it.
I have found problems reading/writing reiser NFS exported files on a
Solaris computer. I would not recommend using reiser (yet) in that role.
My advice and worth what it cost.

Subject: Netscape 4.76 Bus Error
Date: Fri, 05 Jan 2001 23:02:31 -0500
Greetings,
I'm trying to install Netscape Communicator 4.76 on a RH 6.1. I've
created the dorectory /usr/local/netscape and when I try to initialize
./netscape from my user account I get a "bus error" message. I try the
same thing as root and Netscape fires right up....any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
H.
