With a range of 0-60 minutes, did it ever occur to you that a setting of
zero would not make much sense and likely disables it? OK, so I am
guessing, but 0 often means false.

Please help!
I am trying to install my 3COM network card in Linux redhat 6.1 (It works
fine in Win98/Win2000), but for some reason it doesn't work. After reading
the documentation available in the "How to" and Red hat help I followed the
steps to load the modules in the kernel, with the IRQ 5 and IO=0x300 (as
found in the DOS utility program), and then I stop the network services and
fire them up again, but when it tryies to bring up the eth0 interface
(associated to this network card) it just come with [FAILED] , which is
****ing annoying (sorry, but I have been trying for hours ;-D).
I checked that the PNP feature in the NIC was disabled, and tried with
different IOs, but again [FAILED].
please...what can I do?...

Hi. I'm having a rather strange network printing problem. We have
several linux boxes configued to print over the network to an hp2100.
All work fine except one which queues the jobs by creating queue files
in /var/spool/lpd/hp2100 but never prints them. I found the following
each time in /var/log/messages:
Jun 5 12:29:59 animalcracker lpd[26427]: hp2100: lost connection
The weird thing is that all the configuration files for this machine and
the others which work seem to be the same. printcap and the files in
the spool directory are the same. Maybe there's a problem with the lpd
daemon? It seems to be running correctly. Thanks for any suggestions.

ftp.redhat.com was just an example. What I meant was that I can't connect to any
FTP sites at all using gmc. In fact, as far as I can tell, it doesn't even try.
Any suggestions?

Right. However, to get gnuserv/gnuclient to work with GNU Emacs I presumably
have to install different versions to the ones that came with Xemacs, right? Its
not that that is a problem, I know where to find them etc., I was just wondering
to what extent that would break Xemacs ... (not that I actually use Xemacs, I'm
just being overcautious).

Here are some HOWTOs that may help: (forgive me if you've already been
through them):
Ethernet-HOWTO (Duh! I'm sure you've been through this one!)
Firewall-HOWTO (don't miss this one!)
IP-Masquerade-HOWTO (very important!)
IPCHAINS-HOWTO (More firewall stuff)
Home-Network-mini-HOWTO
Probably the easiest (and safest, and most secure) way to get it all
working is to download and install the "pmfirewall" package on your
server. Run this as root, and it'll ask you all kinds of questions
about your network, then it'll install the proper ipchains rules
(hopefully, if you answered all the questions correctly).
Good luck!

I've just noticed a different thread on gnu.emacs.help in which it is stated
that, unlike on NT, gnuclient doesn't automatically start Emacs and gnuserv if
they are not already running. Given that my only dissatisfaction with
emacsclient is that very thing, if the above is true then there is no point in
my trying to insall gnuclient/gnuserv (and thereby breaking Xemacs, if indeed it
will, and even though I don't use it).
So: does gnuclient automatically start GNU Emacs and gnuserv on linux if they
are not already running?
Thanks for all the help,

The CMOS clock calendar has nothing to do with the real time clock. The
real time clock (rtc) is a precise timer.

--directisa is only for Alpha cpu and not for Intel like yours.
Instead you want to set your system 'date' properly and then run
'hwclock --systohc' (or 'setclock' in RedHat).
The easiest way to set your system time accurately before doing that is
with 'ntpdate -b timeserver' from the 'xntp' package.

Argh, I've "forgotten" the VNC X Server. If you want to use this one you
have launch it instead of the normal X server. Perhaps you should link
/var/X11R6/bin/X to Xvnc so it's started as "normal" X Server... but you'll
still have to alter /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers to pass the
parameters...

It doesn't break XEmacs if you don't blindly overwrite its
gnuserv/gnuclient/etc. with those from the gnuserv package for
Emacs. You mentioned that you installed gnuserv from rpm package
so in that case it's up to how that package has been made (I don't
know; I don't use mandrake which I assume you are using based on
the alt.os.linux.mandrake group). For example, in Debian GNU/Linux
gnuserv for Emacs can live just fine (ignoring one glitch that
doesn't matter to me in practice and that could be fixed if I just
bothered to report it as a bug) alongside XEmacs' gnuserv, because
XEmacs 21's gnuclient, for example, is actually called
gnuclient.xemacs21. If that rpm doesn't name those files that way,
perhaps you can rename XEmacs' versions before installing that
package or install it manually (i.e. not from that rpm but from its
original distribution tarball). Or something.
Followups limited to gnu.emacs.help. Also, please try to write a
little shorter lines.

No, but it's trivial to write a script that uses either gnuclient
or emacsclient when gnuserv or emacsserver is running (and thus
Emacs too) and starts Emacs plus gnuserv or emacsserver otherwise.
I even recall seeing such a script in some of the emacs newsgroups
recently.

Yes, I do. FTP works just fine from both machines. I do have to use
the passive command on the laptop because it uses a non-routable IP
address, but otherwise FTP works just fine.
The weird thing is, cvs will work for a while and then stall. I can
see that the last ack has been sent with tcpdump. I just stop
receiving updates.
As a temporary work around, I am now collecting the source files into
on directory on the routing computer and then updating from there.
This is far less pleasant to do. There are enough files in KDE that
brute force copying them all takes longer than I would like.
I guess I will have to learn how to mirror a CVS repository on that
machine.
Anyone care to give me a hint?
