If you log in as root, and configure the login details - you have a option
to login graphically or through a Linux prompt screen. If you select the
graphics screen, the next time you log on, you should have the option to
select which environment you want to run.

Subject: Any advice on alternate character set over telnet?
Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 15:00:21 GMT
My workstation is Linux running RedHat 6.0. To read my mail I telnet to
a Solaris workstation where I run Zmail which uses alternate character
set to draw the dialog boxes and such. When I was sitting directly on
Solaris box, it worked fine. However, over telnet alternate character
set doesn't work and all I see are 'p' and 's' letters. After I telnet
in TERM is set to 'xterm'.
Now, I know this is all related to TERM env variable and
termcap/terminfo database. But, which machine should be adjusted,
Solaris one or my Linux workstation? And also, how should I go about
figuring out how to fix this alternate character set problem?

This is normal behavior in the sense that it can be set in
the file /etc/security/console.perms. You can read about this
by doing
man console.perms
or you can just look at the file. This is something new in
RH6.0 I believe. Probably the devices you mention have entries
in this file. You can change them if you want, but unless there
is a problem, you are probably better off leaving well
enough alone.

Assuming that Linux sees your ditto drive, I think you should
be able to use simple tar commands.
tar cvzf /dev/Your_ditto_device directories
But you probably won't be able to put both Windows and Linux
backups on the same tape.

Subject: Q: Dialup-Networking
Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 15:47:21 +0200
Hi,
gotta question and dont know where to look for an answer:
Once I start up my box the network on my Suse 6.1 (ISDN Dialup, sendmail,
fetchmail, leafnode) is set to offline (if I understand that correctly).
As soon as I log on to my provider (University of Cologne) and ippp0 hangs
up afterwards, the system does not go back into that state. That means that
mails are not deliverd to sendmail quickly but take about 1 minute or so
until I get the message "mail sent to .." from elm or KMail.
I dont know exactly what that is, but I guess the isdn-network does not set
back into offline-mode once I hang up. I come to that conclusion because
before the first log-on "of the day" mails are delivered directly into the
sendmail queue. I thought about an DNS-Lookup problem ...
So, does anybody have a hint? What could be the problem? What information do
you guys need to have, where can I check for a solution?
Thanx alot everyone!

Subject: Need to reset root console account? help...
Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 16:12:07 GMT
Can you kindly share your experience with me?
The root console account is locked, how can it be reset?
On day the server DEC UNIX server crashed in my company and someone
tried to login as root at the console. They didn't know the correct
password and as a result, UNIX security locked the root console account.
Beacuse I have superuser priviledges on the system, I can still telnet
to my account and invoke the SU command.
Typically, when a customer encounters this problem, its because they
tried to telnet to their account unsuccessully a number of times. That
is exactly what happend to the root console login.
Whenever accounts get locked, I typically do the following:
# cd /tcb/files/auth/[first letter of UserID]
# cp customer_userid customer_userid.bak
emacs customer_userid
Delete the unsuccessful login attempts field, "u_numunsuclog".
The root account, however, has additional fields in its auth file
compared to a normal unpriviledged user. If the above procedure is
followed, I still can't unlock the root console account.
The old sysadmin quit and I am a newbie sysadmin trying to fill his
shoes at the company. Any tips, suggestions or comments are welcome.
Please advise. Thank you.

I will be leaving the country--US-- for several months. While
gone I would like to learn Linux. I need ONE book I can take that will
include a CD with the operating system and teach how not only to setup
but to use linux. Dosen't have to make me a pro, just get me started.
Once gone it will be very difficult to find a book in English. Can
anyone help me out. A book called Linux:The Complete Reference, third
ed. looks good but may be too advanced or not. don't know. Linux from
Red Hat comes with some type of book but don't know if that is
detailed enough to learn once setup is completed. I also have a book
called teach yourself Unix in a week but don't know if this would be
good for learning Linux...and so on and so on....<G> Any
recommendations? I know NOTHING about Unix or Linux.
