The other day my window manager decided to
lock up and had to be killed. After restarting the
session, all my shells opened to the /usr/bin directory.
instead of $HOME.
Does anyone know where bash stores its default
directory and/or how to fix this problem? Many

Check your login script to make sure syntax is correct, if this is coming up

This is most likely a configuration problem, I have tried to read all of
the man pages faqs (could not find a postfix howto).
I have a script that uses fetchmail to download all of my mail from
assorted pop3 servers 'round the net and load them to my local machine.
It seems to work, but the mail never seems to get delivered to the
correct user's local mailbox. I have found it residing in postfix's
deferred queues, but can't seem to get them out to the local mailboxes.
Any ideas on what the problem might be.
The system is Mandrake 6.0 complete install (all packages) updated with

Huh, huh... I read last answers to the initial question and I was not
waiting these chain reaction... these newsgroups are really dangerous!
First of all, I want to say that I love standards and an unified syntax
for all the commands and utilities of an operating system (Unix or
another OS). New tars will not be necessary if all tar implementations
follow some standards like ustar (POSIX 1003.1). When I collaborated with
Franois Pinard I wanted to do a better GNU tar implementation for all
Unix-like operating systems.
I cannot understand why Franois Pinard listen to me when Joerg Schilling
is really more important than me on computer sciences. I do not work with
the Technical University of Berlin or Fokus (a great company on ATM
research). I am sorry to read that Mr. Pinard ignored you when you
sent this information _before me_.
Now, Unix programs can use some library functions like getopt() that make
easy to develop syntax-compatible utilities. I think it is useful, mainly
for end-users, and I decided to use it a lot of time ago.
About star I want to say it is a _great_ tar implementation. It works
really fine and we have it installed on our workstations for a lot of
time. But it have a problem... a really hard syntax and we prefer to
use tar (on Solaris or HP-UX) or GNU tar (on our Linux boxes). We have
star to untar some tar archives that cannot be untarred with other tar
releases but our end-users do not want to learn a new tar syntax and I
can understand it.
We are working too with cdrecord, it is a great product too and Joerg
Schilling is one of the best programmers I know as I said some time
ago on alt.solaris.x86.
Finally, I think star is a great program, but we think that users
will not migrate to it quickly because its syntax is really different.
I think that star has a lot of advantages over GNU tar, but syntax is
not one of this.
BTW: Leslie, now Linux ps implementation is avoiding the - on the
options. I think as you it is an error (I understand you want to say
it) and a better syntax is not a simplified syntax. I think that
the - must not be omited.

It's not clear why you'd want to dump AIX in favor of Linux. Linux
has been ported to PowerPC, and if your "aging RS6000s" are based on
PowerPC, there's a possibility there.
However, you can get AIX versions of much of the software that runs
on Linux at ftp://aixpdslibs.seas.ucla.edu, either source or binaries.
So why would you want to give up SMIT and LVM?

Subject: Booting QNX with Linux LILO
I am trying to get my system to boot from Linux/DOS/QNX.
On my first hard drive, /dev/hda, I have:
/dev/hda1 DOS
/dev/hda2 Linux swap
/dev/hda3 Linux native
So I edit /etc/lilo.conf for this and I can boot either Linux or DOS. It
works, no problem.
I add a second disk, /dev/hdb that is all QNX on /dev/hdb1
I add the following entry into lilo.conf
# QNX Bootable on /dev/hdb1
other = /dev/hdb1
label = qnx
table = /dev/hdb
# QNX bootable partition config ends
However, when I run lilo I get the following error after it reports
adding linux and DOS:
Device 0x340: Invalid partition table, 1st entry
3d address: 0/0/0 (-1)
linear address: 1/0/0/0
The QNX disk is one I have been using as standalone so I know it is good
and bootable.
Any answers????

David,
You might want to look into more ram. Linux needs at least 32mb to run
at a reasonable speed - 64mb would make a big difference.

Just more questions. What does fdisk -l say? Does its geometry match
what BIOS reports about the drive?
Is there a "BIOS overlay" (such as OnTrack Disk Manager) on the drive?
Does /dev/hdb1 end in the first 1023 cylinders?

Agreed. I still type the - on ps options to Linux and just
ignore the silly complaint it makes about not needing it.
Otherwise my fingers will forget it on the machines where it

LOL. I think, you are kidding. KDE ist the last thing I would install on
a system with less than 64meg RAM. The most of Qt-stuff and KDE seem to
need more and more memory in the newer versions.
On the other hand, GNOME is modular. You can use a small&fast windowmanager
like icewm or windowmaker with this and disable/uninstall some parts if
you don't use them and want to use the memory otherwise (ie. gmc).

ROTFL. Did you ever tried to run KDE on a 16MB-System - it has to swap

Hi,
I've got a USR PCI 56K pnp modem (not winmodem) which is not
automatically detected by linux (I'm using a mandrake distribution).
Under Win it is connected on the com4, adr 0x2e8, irq 10. I runned
setserial to configure it like that, but when I try minicom the modem
is always detected online and I cannot type any AT commands. It is the
same under kppp or other dialers. I don't have any communication's
program resident. I tried isapnpdump and got one file '.conf' but I
don't know where to put it, and don't even know if it's usefull in my
case. Do I really need to change my modem in order to have a phone
connexion under linux ? :/
Another problem : I'm using an S3 3d video card which is not detected
by XFsetup, but the only resolution I can get is 640x480x16. I try to
use the frame buffer with the kernel 2.2.5 but I cannot get better than
800*600*16. Is there any solution for that ?
Thank you for all your suggestions.
