I can boot to all my hard drives from my bios. I just double checked after I
read your message. I was able to boot right to my 3rd drive that is on the
secondary master. I also just got back from Fry's and got SUSE Linux which
seems to have better 3D support. I'll see what I can do with this version of
Linux.

Wish me Luck

I am running linux mandrake 6.0 and having trouble configuring my sound card
which is Creative Labs sound Blaster PCI512. The card works fine under
win98. When I run sndconfig the auto prope does not detect the card
although it is PNP, I tried selecting from the supported cards such as the
SB16 but when ever the system tries to play a sound sample to test the card
I get a busy error. Any suggestion on how I can configure my sound card

Why use dump (or cpio or tar for that matter) when GNU's cp -a does

You must first run the install script as the user in order to set up a
bunch of files in your home directory. This assumes that you have set up

Help!

Prior to setting up my local network I used a script to connect my Linux machine to my
ISP. Now I have a

Linux and an NT box on a local network and used "linuxconfig" to configure "ppp0".
This works. Since

I don't need to stay connected all the time I would like to set-up dial on demand. I
think I am on the right

track, I have a diald.conf file which appears to work as diald is trying to connect
when it is supposed to. However,

there appears to be a problem with my chatscript.

Here is what's going on:

I am using the same chatscript I used prior to setting up my local network and diald
appears to hang. When I try to use

the chatscript by itself I get the following error message:

"""

The remote system is required to authenticate itself but I couldn't find any secret
(password) which would let it use

an IP address.

"""

I think I know what this means, basically my machine refused the connection, but I
have no clue what to do about it.

I am running RH6.1 distro, I have Samba running to share the printer and disk with the
NT box. All the other stuff

is standard, out of the box.

Where do I need to tweak to get this working?

Thanks,

Robert

Such reports tend to be worthless.
A good report does not give a paraphrase, but the symbol-for-symbol
content of the message.

The kernel boot messages tell us very precisely what happens.
Throwing that information away and subsequently wondering
what could be wrong is no use.

I am trying out Storm Linux, which is based on Debian Slink. All is
running well, apart from a screen corruption problem.

Storm has a graphical boot up which uses the frame-buffer options
compiled into the kernel to display a nice graphic around a central text
area which shows the boot-up messages - a nice compromise I think
between no messages and a full-blown text-mode boot-up. The relevant
part of my kernel config file is:

# Console drivers
#
CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_VIDEO_SELECT=y
# CONFIG_MDA_CONSOLE is not set
CONFIG_FB=y
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE=y
# CONFIG_FB_PM2 is not set
# CONFIG_FB_VESA is not set
CONFIG_FB_VGA16=y
CONFIG_VIDEO_SELECT=y
# CONFIG_FB_MATROX is not set
# CONFIG_FB_VIRTUAL is not set
CONFIG_FBCON_ADVANCED=y
# CONFIG_FBCON_MFB is not set
# CONFIG_FBCON_CFB2 is not set
CONFIG_FBCON_CFB4=y
# CONFIG_FBCON_CFB8 is not set
CONFIG_FBCON_CFB16=y
# CONFIG_FBCON_CFB24 is not set
CONFIG_FBCON_CFB32=y
# CONFIG_FBCON_AFB is not set
# CONFIG_FBCON_ILBM is not set
# CONFIG_FBCON_IPLAN2P2 is not set
# CONFIG_FBCON_IPLAN2P4 is not set
# CONFIG_FBCON_IPLAN2P8 is not set
# CONFIG_FBCON_MAC is not set
CONFIG_FBCON_VGA_PLANES=y
# CONFIG_FBCON_VGA is not set
# CONFIG_FBCON_FONTWIDTH8_ONLY is not set
CONFIG_FBCON_FONTS=y
CONFIG_FONT_8x8=y
# CONFIG_FONT_8x16 is not set
# CONFIG_FONT_SUN8x16 is not set
# CONFIG_FONT_SUN12x22 is not set
# CONFIG_FONT_6x11 is not set
CONFIG_FONT_PEARL_8x8=y
# CONFIG_FONT_ACORN_8x8 is not set

I have an ATI Xpert98 graphics card which uses the Mach 64 driver in X.

My problem is that when I go to shutdown my system from KDM as soon as I
get to the text screen there is screen corruption wherever the boot-up
graphic was on boot up. It is a mess of colours. If I do ctrl-alt F2
then ctrl-alt F1 the corruption disappears.

Is there a way to ensure I get a clean text screen after exiting X? I
have a feeling this is not specifically a Storm Linux issue.

Cheers.

Once you have re-created the Linux Lilo in the MBR, next time you use
Windows, go into Norton Disk Doctor (I believe that's the one that
fscked your old Lilo install) and under the options button, hit the
advanced tab, select skip boot and partition check. Then you can run
disk doctor to fix the fat filesystem and not have it mess up your
Linux partition or the MBR.

Otherwise, I have found NU to be harmless to Linux.

So, I donwloaded a copy of the driver source and compiled with no
problem. However, when I installed the driver under
/lib/modules/2.2.14-1 as a module and did a "depmod -a", I got all kind
of "Unresolved symbol" error messages. Then, I recompiled/installed the
kernel and the error messages still persist even after a reboot with the

But of course.

- Download the file that you would like, lets say to "C:\temp"
- Write down the real name somewhere, as DOS will mangle it, if the file is
gziped and tared that doesn't realy matter.
- Reboot your machine and start Linux.
- Mount the DOS C: drive to a mount point
- Copy the file from the DOS partition to your Linux partition.

There you go.

You might want to consider ripping yout winmodem out and throwing it away and
buy yourself a nice US Robotics modem with jumpers that you can use in Linux
and Windoze. You'll be happier in the long run.

Have fun.

Subject: Why module loads into kernel with compiled in driver?
Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2000 14:51:57 -0800

I compiled my kernel under Suse 6.2 with the serial driver built in.

Then, when the serial service script runs on my system, the serial
module loads. All sorts of bizarre data then gets reported by command
line invocations of setserial. The knowledge the built in kernel serial
driver possessed about my ports, gets lost. setserial thinks my ports
are unknown. I can configure them again, but then I wonder who is
driving the ports?

At this point, I am back to the stock Suse kernel with all modules.

But the system is much faster with a hand tuned kernel, so I want to use
that in a stable capacity eventually. But I wonder how to do this in
Suse.

I suspect I have to uninstall the Suse modules package, and then the
compiled kernel will behave properly.

I didn't uninstall the Suse modules last time. I assumed when I compile
a kernel, the compiled modules would overwrite the old ones.

Can anyone explain more about what goes on in this process?

Thanks.

Oh RedHat,

I am not sure, maybe it is me but lately I'm having a lot of trouble
with all kinds of stuff. I am strating to blame the distribution (RH
6.1).

Anyway, I have the following in my /etc/fstab file:

/dev/cdrom              /mnt/cdrom              iso9660 noauto,user,rw
0 0

The device is a CD-RW. So according to my logic I should be able to
mount the cdrom as a user but, well the computer disagrees as I get the
following error:

$ mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
mount: only root can do that

So where else do I need to set the permissions for this?

I am running RH6.1 with GNOME and Enlightenment.
