After you ungzipped the file you should have a directory of uncompressed
files. Look at these files -- especially those labelled "README" or
"INSTALL" or something similar. Further directions will be found there.

Remember QuickDir for DOS? You could tag files for multiple operations, execute
predefined programs on files with certain suffixes, get a good view of your
Tree. It was small, fast and slick. I kind of wish there was something similar
for Linux runlevel 3 use. Anyone know of such a utility? Perhaps Mr. Olsen
could 'port QD!

I configured an Oracle network listener to prestart processes, and I guess I
started too many. The disk churned for a few minutes, and then just hung.
I could't CTRL-C out of it. I tried connecting via another telnet sessioln
(from Windows), but I couldn't get a prompt. I ended up powering down the
box (which doesn't have a monitor attached).

I won't try that again. But if I get myself in a jam like this again, is
there a way out?

I've had no trouble if I access the floppy as /dev/fd0, and the LS-120
as /dev/hd? . To Linux the LS-120 is actually an ide drive.

Though I have no idea about the virus problems I would like to ask for more
information about your mouse, do you know what port it's plugged into? PS/2
or Serial? And what kind of mouse is it? (ie. name brand and model)

I had a similar problem with my Microsoft IntelliMouse PS/2, I finally
figured out that in XF86Setup there are two listings for Intellimouse,
"Intellimouse" and "IMPS/2" after finding that second setting for my mouse I
can use it no problem, and I can use the wheel in a few of X's windows! BTW
in XF86Setup the only way to get that set is to use the "tab" key and
'enter' through all the settings then select "apply", after that I was able
to use the mouse to change the rest of the settings in XF86Setup.

A question from a System V administrator:

Is that possible to make Total Memory Dumps under Linux?
Are there any programs to analyze TMDs (i.e. crash)?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Subject: Java applet on RH6.0
Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 02:43:51 GMT

Hi, there,

Met a problem with Java's appletviewer on RedHat6.0. Not sure what is
the reason.

I just jumped into Java and tried to run a Java Applet from a book. It
is a flying banner. I first put the <applet>...</applet> stuffs within
the source codes and then launch appletviewer to run it. The machine
just sat there and seems running. But nothing happened after almost 2
minutes. I had to Ctrl-C to abort this process. I then tried to put the
<applet>...</applet> stuffs into another file ending with .html and then
used appletviewer again to run this html file. But the same thing
happened again. Finally, I opened the Netscape run that html file and
got the flying banner.

I tried another much easier applet which just shows a line of
characters. It worked well, in either of the above three ways.

For that flying banner, should I just simply waitting for its running
although it took me more than 2 mins on P-II 300 without anything? Or is
there anything wrong with the appletviewer in RH6.0?

Any advice?

Thanks,

Davis,

That's because root does not have authorization to access the X server.
There are a lot of ways to fix this (some of which not recommendable), but
by far the simplest is to copy your ~/.Xauthority file to /root. You'll
have to do this once for each new X session, but once it's done for a given
session, you can su and exit and su again without hassle.

Where is a good place where I can find out how to set up my soundcard,

I did the modprobe thing for my SB 16 but it doesn't work.

Wow, good thing I am only experimenting because of all the Linux fuss. This

Hi-

Well, if anyone's interested, here's how
to do it:

The command below gets rid of all
the kview sessions, so I just put this in
after I was done with the pictures.

       kill (ps --no-header -o "%p" -Ckview)

A similar attempt to get rid of netscape
wouldn't work for some reason.

The solution there was to put a
       trap '' EXIT

just before the part of the script that waited
for user entry.

It is an authentication scheme. The requesting party must send the X a
magic number ( a long random string) or else it will not display. This
is to prevent Sig Akurst in Mongolia from connecting to your X display
and showing you porno pictures on your screen without your permission.
Make a little file
/root/bin/rpermit
#!/bin/csh
if ( "$1" == "" ) then
echo "Usage rpermit username"; exit
endif
if ( "$?argv[2]" == "1" ) then
setenv XHOST $2
else
setenv XHOST `hostname`
endif
xauth -f ~$1/.Xauthority extract - ${XHOST}/unix:0 | xauth merge -

Make this file executable, and then as root, do
rpermit username
to allow root to display on an X screen owned by username.

They say the minimum is a 386 with 4M of RAM and 80M of hard drive space.
I'd suggest something a little more powerful... say, a 486 at 66MHz with
32M and a 1G disk. Linux should be happy with that, and the more RAM you
have, the faster your stuff will compile...

gcc and g++ are standard with every distro in existence. If you want
something like Visual C++, you can pay for CodeWarrior or download
kdevelop for free.

There are more FAQs than you can shake a stick at. Enter "Linux FAQ" into
any search engine and see what happens. Failing that, try:

http://www.linuxnewbie.org http://www.linuxdoc.org
http://www.redhat.com http://www.suse.com http://www.slackware.com
http://www.linux-mandrake.com http://www.debian.org

I reccommend finding out if there's a LUG (Linux User Group) in your area
and asking them for help... failing that, find some local Linux user and
ask him/her for help... failing that, buy a boxed set like SuSE 6.3 and
dive in fully prepared to learn a *lot* of stuff. Bonne chance.

You may have filled up swap, which is not a good idea.
You could have tried alt-ctrl-del (if it has a keyboard) but with a full

You probably need to create the correct /dev/fd*. See the devices.txt in
kernel source Documentation directory.

Just to clarify
Windows 2000 has potentially 63000 bugs. This number was generated by a program
auto-scanning the source code which also included 10000 lines of code that was not
used in the final release-
I am by no means a Microsoft supporter but the distribution of FUD is
counter-productive.
Linux will eventually surpass Microsoft in the server market based on it's own
merits, not propoganda. The way it should be

To avoid duplicating work that other people are already doing, check out
