Hi,
I have a Segate 18GB Ultra2 SCSI HD, after I "fdisk" it and write the
partition to disk. It work fine without any error message, but the
problem is that when I quit fdisk and enter fdisk again, the partition
table does not change as I modify before.
what's the problem?? Harddisk problem or fdisk problem? It have also
use "cfdisk", but with the same result.
Help!!

What linux distribution are you running? If debian, read
'man update-alternatives', and take action. It looks like it
can be changed on redhat by editing /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients.
I don't know about the other ~ 1E5 distributions.

If so, you need to uncomment the line in /etc/inetd.conf what causes the
talk daemon to start. Then restart inetd.
If you're not running inetd, then have you started the talkd daemon?
If not, start it.

Check to see whether you have the sbpcd module installed on your hard disk.
If it is, edit conf.modules (or modules.conf) and add
options sbpcd sbpcd=0x230,1
Then try
modprobe sbpcd
If it fails, you may need to change 0x230,1 to 0x230,0. (or some other
number?)
Another thing you may need (I have a soundblaster CDROM in an old 486) is to
initialise the card with a DOS boot disk before starting linux.

I am in a similar situation, except that:
* I already have a Linux box working, with an FTP server installed (and
apparently, working)
* I'm using a Mandrake 7.0 boot disk (made from the CD), but it sounds like
it's identical.
* I'm using a Genius PCMCIA network card, which is compatible with the
pcnet_cs linux driver
* I'm not asked for a "driver disk" when I boot, it just asks me where to
install from
Like Liam, I have a problem, as the Genius card is not listed. I have the
correct driver on my Linux box, but I have no opportunity to load it.

Once you've made your dialup connection, you need to do the following:
route -delete default
route -add default gw a.b.c.d
Where a.b.c.d is the IP address of the gateway machine assigned to you
by your dialip ISP. When you hang up, you need to run the above two
commands again, but replace a.b.c.d with the IP address of your LAN
gateway.
The only twist that makes this a little bit complex is that route must
be run as root, which might complicate scripting this task to automate
it a bit.
Cheers.

Isn't Apache's standard configuration to treat hostname/~user as a link
to ~user/public_html? If not, it can be set in the Apache configuration
files. That's a much less messy way to do it. Users can then create a
directory called "public_html", set the permisions to least 644, and
they're set.
However, that doesn't solve the problem of giving CGI access. You need
to configure Apache to allow users to run CGI scripts from their own
directories. I haven't done this, but it should be somewhere in the
Apache configuration files too. However, this isn't a good idea, because
scripts run with the permission of the Web server (which is root, if
you've configured Apache badly, or some dedicated user like www if
you've done it right.) In either case, it means that a user's CGI script
can potentially damage files not belonging to the user.
Instead, you should install cgiwrap, which allows the Web server to run
CGI scripts with the UID of the user who owns them. This means that, at
worst, a user's badly-designed CGI program could wipe out, reveal or
otherise compromise the user's own files but not those of anyone else.
In general, you should keep tight control over who can write programs
that the Web server can execute. CGi programs need to be carefully
security-checked, because they can be run by anonymous outside users,
and they *don't* have to be invoked by submitting a Web form -- they can
be directly supplied with any kind of data that the user wants.

I have an old computer for which i recently bought a new 8 gig HD. Tried to
install it on the Primary IDE channel but it wouldnt boot (eventhough its
reconised in the BIOS setup), though after booting from the original 500mb
HD and running fdisk in DOS it shows the 2nd drive and partitions but you
cant use them (or even use "D:", it wont even do that). Yet when I boot
Win95 I can use them.
The linux installation (Mandrake 7.2 beta, going to try debian next just
incase thats the prob which seems very unlikely) wont run from HD without
booting from a floppy 'cause as mentioned above its inaccessable or
non-existent to DOS it seems. All goes well untill I try to make a linux
partition and write the changes made to the disk, error message
"device/resource is busy".

You might check out this URL:

Star currently handles files up to a size of 2 GB and
archives up to 2000000 TB. The maximum file size limitation
of 2 GB may easily be expanded to 8 GB. With a non standard
extension star will handle files up to 200000000 TB.
