Subject: yamaha cdrw problem
Date: Wed, 01 Mar 2000 12:06:20 GMT

I just installed redhat 6.1, and I get HD accesses every seconds, until
I put a cd in my yamaha cdrw 6420 ide drive! When I remove the cd, the
hd accesses restart!

When I go back to the shell, I can see an error message repeating avery
seconds, saying "error atapi device hdd ...." it seems to be my cdrw
drive's fault.

How can I get rid of this errors?
Thanks

Hi.

I am running RedHat Intel Linux 6.1. Does a free version of dBase
exist for same?

Thanks.

Subject: Modem say BUSY when it isn't!!!
Date: Wed, 01 Mar 2000 13:13:00 GMT

I've built a fax server based around Linux. I'm using 2 Comtrol
RockertPort serial cards with 8 RS232 serial ports on each card and
I've created a bunch of scripts to automatically listen for faxes
via 'efax' and update our Intranet on the fly. This works absolutely
fine.
The main problem I'm having is that when I send faxes it works
intermittently which has left me completely confused!!!

When I send a fax to a number, the modem (Askey Magic Express 56k/V.90
external voice/fax/data modem) dials correctly but hangs up
and reports the line as "BUSY" after a couple of rings. The length of
time that it rings varies from about 10 seconds to 50 seconds sometimes
but as long as the target fax machine answers in time, I get a
delivered fax.

On one particular line that I call, the modem is programmed to answer
after 4 rings but the modem always seems to report busy
before it can answer. One thing I have noted is that the faxes
generally go through the first time after I boot up the PC so it leads
me to believe
that the software is possibly not configured correctly.

I've tested it by calling standard phone lines with 'fax send' and it
still reports busy for landlines or mobiles. However, when I call my
mobile
manually by using ATDTxxxxxxx, it doesn't show a false busy so the
hardware appears to be OK.

I'm using efax 0.9a using its standard generic modem commands but these
can be changed.

I've looked at the commands in the manual but only one appears to state
how long the phone waits before a carrier but this reports
'NO ANSWER' instead of busy. Has anyone got any ideas about what is
causing this? Any ideas will be warmly appreciated!!!

AFAIK, the latest version of Pine has filtering builtin. Check out
ver. 4.21.

On your ext2 filesystem you have file permissions (rwxrwxrwx) that could not
be set on your DOS/WIN/FAT16 partition. Those filesystems do not know
anything about file permissions and ownership.

Nope, it's RH 6.1's fault. The automounter is trying to access the CD-RW
drive every few seconds and coming up with an error because there's
no media there. I fixed the problem by compiling a new kernel without
automount (amd) support; there is probably a better way but I can't
remember it off the top of my head. Try commenting out the "automount"
line in /etc/nsswitch.conf? Can't say for sure, I always found the
automounter annoying...

This is a FAQ and probably addressed in the RH manual that came with your
distro. I suggest you take the time to read both; it'll save you a lot of
headaches in the long run.

At boot time, the kernel uses the BIOS to determine how much memory there
is. Some BIOSes can return a maximum value of 64M, even if there's more
memory there. The fix is to tell the kernel how much memory there is at
boot time. At the LILO prompt, enter "linux mem=128M" and watch all the
memory get detected. Read the LILO documentation to find out how to
automate this process upon bootup...

Several possibilities; see URL below...

Note that "true" dBase may soon be available for Linux, albeit not too
likely at no cost...

The oss website offers their drivers for two different series of kernels. I
don't remember, but it seems the 1.xxx series and 2.xxx series. Make sure
you have downloaded the correct one. Remember the 6.1 has _nothing_ to do
with the kernel version for it is simply a distribution version for RH.

I am trying to setup apache. Here's a hypothetical question that should
answer my problem.

Example
I want John and Carol to both be able to read, write and look through
the "webpages" directory.

So I create a group called "webwriters"
I put John and Carol in that group.
Under root I allow webwriters to own the "webpages" directory.
I set the permissions on the directory "webpages" for the webwriters
group to read, write and execute.

Am I forgetting something? (I haven't tried it yet). The difficult
thing is: how many groups is an individual allowed to be a member of?
If I allow John to be a member of "webwriters" group, is that going to
cause him to get punted out of some other group.

# man clock
# man hwclock
# man date
will all provide documentation relevant to setting your clock by hand.

It may be an interesting idea to install ntp, which is available as a
Red Hat Linux package:

<http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/contrib/libc6/i386/ntp-4.0.98a-1.i386.html>

ntpdate, part of this package, allows you to set the date on your
computer via querying time servers on the Internet, which gives Rather
Good Results. ntpdc, the time server daemon, will keep your computer
synchronized against other time servers, thus allowing you to sync a
whole network of computers.

no errors == same problem.

I get an oops=2 and an "Unable to handle kernel paging request at

I was running fine before the upgrade, what happened????Mister RedHat???
