I have a Epson Stylus Color 600 printer, which have been working fine
(in Win and Linux) for years. Recently I updated to Slackware 7.0, and now
whenever I print something, the printer pauses about three times per page,
from about 20 to 40 seconds each turn. The quality and everything else have
not changed.
        dmesg shows the following:

lp0: using parport0 (interrupt-driven).
registered device ppp0
lp0: the printing could be optimized using the TRUST_IRQ flag, see the top of
linux/drivers/char/lp.c

        So I read lp.c, and it said to `tunelp /dev/lp0 -T on`. I did that,
but nothing improved. lp is compiled as a module, as parport_pc.o and
parport_probe.o. I have also in a ZIP drive daisy-chained, but it had never
given problems also for more than a year.
        Help anyone?

There's Matlab (http://www.mathworks.com/) or you could try GNU Octave
(http://www.che.wisc.edu/octave/) which is MatLab like but I don't think
it is as fully featured, it is however Free Software.

Yup, that does it; how simple. Not that it matters anymore, (new

First, be aware that WP 8 has its own font rasterizer independent of X's,
so installing fonts in X will be insufficient (and, indeed, unnecessary)
to use fonts in WP. I know less about StarOffice, but I believe you need
to install fonts in X and then muck with some configuration files to get
them working. For WP, you can find more information about the nitty-gritty
details at http://www.rodsbooks.com/wpfonts/. You'll also need the
commercial version of WP to install fonts; the downloadable version lacks
the font installer. The commercial version comes with a fair number of
fonts, so that might be sufficient for your needs.

There are an assortment of freeware fonts available, but most aren't that
good. (Nonetheless, I included as many of these as I could find on the CD
to my book, _Special Edition Using Corel WordPerfect 8 for Linux_,
http://www.rodsbooks.com/books/.) Bitstream (http://www.bitstream.com)
offers an assortment of high-quality fonts at reasonable prices, although
their collections all carry list prices above your $20 limit. You might be
able to find one in a store for $20, particularly if it's an older
collection in a closeout bin. Southern Software (http://www.ssifonts.com/)
has a big collection of font "clones" that are of OK quality for casual
use. When I got this set, they included the .afm file that Linux needs,
but I've heard that they may have eliminated this feature since then,
which is unfortunate if true. They sell their font CDs directly for $30.

No matter what you get, buy a font collection that comes in "PC" or
"Windows" format, not "Mac" format; Mac fonts need special conversions to
be used in Linux, and these conversions sometimes don't work completely
correctly. Get a collection that includes PostScript Type 1 (aka "ATM")
fonts. TrueType fonts are increasingly OK for display in X, but
WordPerfect, at least, can't use Type 1 fonts. (Version 9 will have this
capability, but Version 8 doesn't.)

Using VNC server on any RH or Mandrake boxes works fine. When attaching
to a VNC server on any SuSE box all keyboard output is garbage. X
displays fine and runs normally but only garbage is output from any
keyboard entries. The SuSE boxes are using the generic VNC scripts
provided by SuSE RPM. Any hints.

I believe this should be added to the FAQ by now - there are a bunch of
threads regarding this on every linux-NG by now.

Now to answer your question:

Go to http://jcatki.dhs.org/imwheel/ and read through the page.
Download and install imwheel.
Edit your XF86config so that the pointer section looks something like
this:
Section "Pointer"
    Protocol "IMPS/2"
    Device "/dev/mouse"
    ZAxisMapping 4 5
     Buttons 3
EndSection

start imwheel (read the imwheel manual)
And you should be ready to go...

named is a name server demon which is responsible for the translation of
qualified Internet names into an IP-address and vice versa. If there are a lot of
messages then it's mostly a misconfiguration problem. You should decide wether
or not to use the named (i.e. start it at rc.config) or rely on the nameserver of
your provider.

We ran the upgrade and it was pretty smooth for all but one of
our boxen. For some reason that one lost system sounds under
KDE, although the players and such work fine. /dev/sndstat
and /proc/sound seem to be missing. Dunno why.

Probably an old question, but couldn't find anything so here goes...

Some of the /dev devices (notably /dev/audio* /dev/dsp* /dev/mixer*
and so forth -- the audio stuff) have a curious habit of changing
ownership. If they're owned by root and users *don't* have rw
priveledges, the audio functions don't work. If they're owned by
root and the users *do* have rw priveledges, before long they're
owned by some user and the fool things are

crw-------

which makes life difficult for the next user to log in.

I've hacked around this by patching the login scripts but that
sucks. Anyone know where this is coming from and have a better
solution?

Hi.

I've installed winlinux 2000 in my Inspiron 3700 a few days ago.
Similarly, my card is correctly recognised but the modem was installed
on ttyS0 for some reasons. But i've check that the /dev/modem is
actually point to ttyS4?! I'm wondering do i have to assign my modem to
COM5 (which is set in my machine under win98)? If yes, how?

Actualy, i'm a newbie in Linux and this is the first time i've
installed Linux in my machine. I've read some howtos in order to find
some help but still don't have a clue of what's going on.

It would be greatly appreciated if any of the experts out there could
drop me some hints. Thanks.
