Hi,
I am using Adelphia powerlink (cable modem) as my internet provider. I
setup network in redhat 6.1 as dhcp. When I use ifconfig to check my
network, I got the message like:
[root@oh-wreserve3a-211 /mnt]# ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:C0:F0:4A:07:D9
inet addr:24.48.168.211 Bcast:24.48.168.255

According to some documents I read, if "inet addr:" show an IP address,
then I am in business. However, I still can't connect to internet. When
I lauched ftp, telnet or www, the programs just stuck, like caught in an
infinite do-loop..... Can anyone help me what I missed???
thanks!!

X is a client/server configuration. Client applications execute on the
remote machine and X window servers execute on the local machine. To
accomplish what (I think) you want, the 2 - 3 account users will start X
on their machines first then rlogin to the machine with the shared
application(s).
If you just want windows open for several accounts on the same machine,
start X and open several windows, then 'su' to each of the desired
account in a separate window.
Hope this helps

I have not tried what you are attempting to do, but I would think you would
have to tell Xfree86 to start additional servers on those displays... Take a
look at /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers, specifically... add the :1 definition
(server) to the file. Again, I have not tried this. My system is headless. I
display X sessions to my PC using Xwin32 (XDMCP) on my NT Workstation.
Steve Cowles
# This file should contain an entry to start the server on the
# local display; if you have more than one display (not screen),
# you can add entries to the list (one per line). If you also
# have some X terminals connected which do not support XDMCP,
# you can add them here as well. Each X terminal line should
# look like:
# XTerminalName:0 foreign

First of all, is your network internal or did you set up the DHCP client?
The linux DHCP client does not work properly with @home service. It needs
to be configured manually as static. Next, you need to turn of "DNS is
required for normal operation" in netconf. Also make sure you entered a
default domain as well as your gateway and nameservers.
Email me with any questions.

I agree. My first editor was DOS' edit. *shudder* My first _real_ editor was
Emacs, but while I still consider it an excellent piece of work, I have many
complaints about it. Then I learned Vi, but I wanted a few more features to
support coding, such as syntax shading. I found Vim, and never went back. It's
now installed on every platform I work on, including windoze.

I have a TV-tuner card which uses the zoran drivers. The problem and how
I got there is as follows:
1. Kernel (2.2.14) compiles OK with video4linux and bttv as modules.
2. bigphysarea-2.2.13 -patch works fine. After booting I've got
[root@sulo bin]# cat /proc/bigphysarea

number of blocks: 1 0
size of largest block: 4096 kB 0 kB
total: 4096 kB 0

which is fine.
3. zoran-0.6.3 driver package compiles OK.
4. all the modules needed are probed OK, as you can see:
[root@sulo bin]# lsmod

This is xawtv-3.09, running on Linux/i686 (2.2.14-bigphys)

Fire up netcfg (as root) and click on Routing.
You should there enter the Default Gateway (as specified by your
cable company) and device (eth0). Also click on Names and enter
your name servers as well as a hostname and domain.
BTW, it's not a good idea to broadcast your IP address on the net,
though the script kiddies will find you pretty soon anyway. I
suggest installing portsentry and turning off as many inetd services
as possible.

You may be able to do what you want to with telnet. It's
a cheaper solution than xterminal when working with Win9x.
Anzio has a product. The telnet which comes with Win9x is
as lame as Win9x itself...

There a space between -- and :1.
startx -- :1
The -- is a delimeter between options that startx send to the session
script and options send to the X server if I remember well.
Now ctrl-alt-F7 and ctrl-alt-F8 should be 2 different X server.

I think you're making it too complicated. Login and start X. Open two
or three windows. Select one of the windows ans 'su - xxx' (switch to
user xxx). You now have a window serving each of two accounts, the
original and xxx. If desired, select the third window and 'su - yyy' to
switch to user yyy. You now have three windows servicing each of three
accounts, the original, xxx, and yyy. Continue as desired.

I suggest 2 things:
1. Charge what you think you're worth in that job. US$20/hr? US$40/hr?
What? If you feel quite happy getting US$15/hr and then find that
you're being undervalued in this position as everyone is earning more
than you, I expect you'd be a little miffed. Am I right? And yet you
were quite happy to accept the US$15/hr in the first place. People are
so greedy.
2. Don't they tell you what they're prepared to give you and then you
negotiate from there?
Having said that I'd guess that as you've left school and it's an
admin job I'd go for about GB20K which would be about US$30K which
works out at about ....oh dear, US$10.27/hr. Perhaps I have my sums
