Subject: power manage question
Date: Mon, 08 Jan 2001 17:06:07 GMT
Hello,
I'm having a power managment/save question that I am hoping can get
answered.
I was running RH6.2 a while back and after a period of inactivity my
computer would power down nicely. Moniter goes in power save, hard
drive would spin down, fans would spin down and go into a power save
mode. Then, when I would want to go back an work I would simply move
the mouse or press a key on the keyboard to wake everything up to where
I had left it.
Now I'm running SuSE 7.0 and during a period of inactivity I'm seeing a
differnt type of power down. I can't tell if the computer is powering
down (cause the fans are still running , and the hard drive is still
spinning) but the moniter into power save. However when I go to work on
the computer again, I can't. No mouse movement or keystroke will power
it up. SO I then need to reboot, and it's a bad reboot because I get a
message saying there was an improper shutdown.
I am wondering how I can go back to the way I had it before. Was that a
program that was running via the OS? I've not done anything to the
BIOS. How can I have my computer "power down" in a way such that I can
go back and work on it again later?
thanks!

Please ignore him. There were troubles with nVidia and XFree86 3.*, but
nothing that prevented XFree86 from releasing drivers (basically, nVidia
came in at the last minute before an XFree86 release, and told the XFree
developers that they couldn't release all the source code they had).
And yes, 4.0 has very good support for the TNT cards... nVidia has also
released 3D drivers for most of their cards under XFree86 4.0.*

What a pity some people don't stick to Windoze, I'm referring to the
previous replies you got.
I'm running fine with XFree86 4.0.1 & TNT2 M64 & NVidia's driver and
lib. I believe I needed a small patch to compile it on my 2.4.0 kernel
though, but that's it. Eg. Tom's Hardware (www.tomshardware.com) has a
very good walkthrough for setting up this config.
Good luck,

Lesson learned from above:
- PM (partition-magic) may produce a partition that is invalid for
Linux
- The problem was only related with partition 5 & 6, not 3 & 4.
- Related tools are PM (win), fdisk, cfdisk, gnu-parted
cfdisk might be the best solution.

compile the drivers as modules (I don't know what name they'll have),
then with modinfo -p you can ask their parameters.
You may need to put some parameters in /etc/modules.conf (or
/etc/conf.modules) for these modules.
Have you defined aliases in modules.conf for these adaptors?
alias eth0 ethIII_module
option irq=...
alias eth1 linksys_dec_tulip_module
option this=... that=...
It would be helpful if you had a look in /var/log/messages to see the
exact errors
Are these plug and play devices? PCI ? Have a look in /proc/pci for
valuable information.
etc, etc

Hmm - I was under the impression that it had to be patched to

Hi,
In Linux slackware, when I try to use ^d to logout from bash, I got
a warning saying something like "type logout instead". How can I
disable this feature?
Somebody said it is build into bash executable but I copy a good
version from my RH and it behave insane in slackware. So I think
there must be some (hidden) configuration that I don't know of.

As I have been encountering more and more programs that want
glibc v2.2 I have been considering updating my present glibc
v2.13 installation to v2.2. After my experience with the
glibc2.0 => glibc2.1 debacle I am reluctant to simply jump into
this. I'm running RH v6.1 with kernel 2.2.18 and not sure I want
RH 7.0 yet. Has anybody here made the jump to glibc2.2 without
installing a new distribution and survived to tell the tale? Was
it as much a PITA as glibc2.0 => glibc2.1? Inquiring readers
want to know...

I've done this using Linux fdisk, but only on systems which had
Windows and Linux, so I can't speak to what Solaris might do.
The Linux fdisk program (as of a couple of years ago anyway) was
non-destructive, as least as far as Linux goes. (I had a disk
that had 20 partitions on it --don't ask-- and RedHat and SuSe
installers would crash when they saw that many. I had to delete
them, do the install (on a partition =< 16), then put them back
with Linux fdisk. The filesystems on those "high" partitions
were unaffected.
I've also "re-typed" partitions to hide them from Windows and
Linux installers. Windows looks for the signature byte on booting
and applies letters to the drives. RedHat looks for Linux
signatures when you do an update (although now, I believe it
lists the ones it finds and asks which is the partition to update).
Linux fdisk has a number of signatures you can put on a partition
which are ignored by Windows, etc.

Subject: help with compiling kernel 2.4
Date: 8 Jan 2001 18:49:36 GMT
Hi everyone,
I am running RedHat Linux version 6.1 with kernel 2.2.18. I would like to
upgrade the kernel to version 2.4. I download linux-2.4.0.tar.gz to /usr/src
directory the following steps:
1) gunzip linux-2.4.0.tar.gz
2) tar -xvpf linux-2.4.0.tar
3) cd /usr/src/linux
4) make mrproper
5) make menuconfig (in this step, I uncheck the Cardbus support (pcmcia) because
I am running linux on a destop [dell 300MHz])
6) make dep
7) make clean
8) make bzImage
9) make modules
10)make modules_install
in step 10, I get this error:

At this point, I copy the bzImage and System.map to /boot, modify the
/etc/lilo.conf, and run the /sbin/lilo command and reboot the box. When
the system is restarted, it hangs. I could not get passed the line
"decompressing the linux kernel".
Going back to the error message, it has to do with the pcmcia modules which
I don't need. How do I get around this problem? When I recompile the box
with kernel 2.2.18, I didn't see the pcmcia directory under
/lib/modules/2.2.18; however, I do see the pcmcia directory
/lib/modules/2.4.0/pcmcia under kernel 2.4. Can anyone help me with this
problem? Right now, I am running kernel 2.2.18 but I really would like
to use kernel 2.4. I am a newbie here so please be gentle with me.
Many Thanks....
David
