Hello
I can buy a quite cheap laptop, Toshiba Satellite 2100 CDS. Before to
buy it, I'd like to know if it's possible to insall Linux RH on it,
and if there are any limitations. Are all drivers available ?
(soundcard, modem, screen, cdrom and other PCMCIA devices)
Generaly speaking, is it possible to install Linux on most of the
laptops ?
Thank you for your help,

I have xmms-1.0.1-1. I've been upgrading gnome's and many packages
now I found out it stopped working. It launches, and seems it plays
but I hear nothing. It also looks it parses the file too fast.
What could have been ?
gnome-core, gnome-audio ? I've always used rpm to install things so
I don't know what could have been. And going back to the CD packages
will be a pain.
I tried to install latest gnome but I couldn't because it complains
it needs the package windowmanager. That I couldn't find.
Please help me .

I believe mandrake comes with RH's sndconfig. Choose 'manual' setting
instead of 'autodetect'. This comes after 'pretending' you did NOT
hear the sound sample. THen u get to pick DMA, address, etc.
SOmebody might have a better answer but it's worth a shot.
Then it's going to play the sample again.
You could always back out of it if it goes nowhere.

world (both in absolute dollars, and as a proportion of the cost of
living), most recent college graduates do not earn $45K per year. But
we have a major shortage of computer professionals in much of the

This would be barely a living wage for a single person in most of the
U.S., due to the high cost of living. After taxes, it would not be
sufficient to make the mortgage payment on an average home in most
markets, or *any* home in the more expensive parts of the country such

Most of the IT people I know earn between $50-$250K per year. The

I think it's a myth that wages are higher in the United States, at least
when the high cost of living is taken into account.
I presently earn a tad under 500,000 FFr a year, which I think translates
into about 73,000 US$ per year. That doesn't seem much, but I live in
a relatively large flat, and only pay 4,000 FFr a month (580 US$).
So the wages are lower in Europe, but the cost of living is lower, too.

PM is *VERY* finicky about the partitions with which it will work. The
single most likely cause of the problem you're seeing is out-of-order
logical partitions. For instance (from Linux fdisk):
/dev/sda5 667 1011 2771181 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 5 666 5317483+ 83 Linux
Note that /dev/sda5 starts AFTER /dev/sda6. PM chokes on this. You CAN fix
this problem by noting the start and end points of the partitions,
deleting ALL logical partitions, and re-creating the partitions with the
EXACT SAME start and end points, in order. If any Linux partitions are
affected, you'll need to change their entries in /etc/fstab, and you may
need to re-run lilo. BE CAREFUL, THOUGH! Sometimes Linux's fdisk can't
create a new partition of the exact correct size. If so, ABORT THE
OPERATION!!! Also, don't try this with any disk partitioning program
except Linux's fdisk; AFAIK, no other program can make the required
changes. (Well, I suppose you could do it with a low-level disk editor,
but I don't know enough about the data structures to say what to change.)

Yes, PM relocates data blocks as necessary. It does so on all partition
types that it handles (FAT, HPFS, NTFS, ext2fs).

Hi,
Being a Linux user and watching the way things are progressing I belive
we have to avoid the Unix syndrome. The unix syndrome being one great
operating system whose distributions have become so incompatible
with each other that it has become a headache to build anything
universal under the platform.
To avoid this problem I believe that once a year the Linux community
needs to identify the elements that are forking into incompatibility
and bring them together to make them work on any Linux distribution.
One of those things that needs addressing, IMHO, is the installer. We
need to come up with an installer that anyone can use and if possible
it should be X based.

Also, when I try to start extract, I got the message:

I already set the downloaded file
extract to executable with "chmod 755 extract".
Can any XFree86 insider give me some hints?

configure it as such when you rebuild the kernel. It should work without a

I would first mention it to the maintainer of cdrecord to see if someone
has reported it before. If you decide not to do that there is a file in the
kernel source tree that describes how to reoport bugs (I cannot remember
the name right now). Check under /usr/src/linux.

I have a redhat 6.0 box - its an i486/50dx machine - nothing
flash. Running XFree86 and netscape.
I dont expect miracles, but I have found there is a severe speed problem
with XFS. It manifests itself as a 2 minute delay in the start=up of
netscape.
Even "xbanner" takes 90 seconds to run.
Using "ps -A x" I have noted that all the time delay is being mopped up in
"user land" loops in the xfs server.
I have even re-installed redhat 5.2, 6.0, 6.1 and caldera 1.3 - ALL have
the same problem.
Am I missing something here - is this a bug, or do I really have to live
with the auful though that Windows is better than linux on this box - I
think I really couldnt handle that!

Hi
I have recently bought a 40 GB Maxtor disk. After upgrading
my motherboard bios, it was recognized all right (4982 cyl, 255,63 in
LBA mode).
However, my RedHat 6.1 seems to have a problem with it. Fdisk
will report 870 cyl (???). I managed to create a large filesystem
(38GB) by changing the number of cylinders manually. When I try to mount
it though, I get a lot of errors. E2fsck also reports several dup inodes
among plenty of other errors.
Does anybody know what is going on? Fdisk does seem to be unable to
handle more than 4k cyl. Is this correct?
Any suggestions appreciated

I use the same version of bru with my 2.2 kernel system without a
hitch. Programs compiled against glibc 2.0.* _should_ work with glibc
2.1.*, in my case, bru works fine. Sounds like you may have an incomplete

You can use Xircom's utilities to change the COM port to a COM2-4. The
out of box kernel will only set-up ttyS0-ttyS3, because this is the
standard
PC configuration. If you would like to use COM5, then use setserial
/dev/ttyS4
irq=? port=? , you'll have to find out the port and IRQ's assigned to your
modem.
These are set using software, I believe. I use a Xircom 10/100TX+56k
RealPort
with Linux, works great, so yours should work fine. The /dev/modem is just
a link
to the actual tty, you don't need to use it. After you get things working,
if you want
to use /dev/modem, just ln -s /dev/ttyS? /dev/modem to create the link
(you may
have to delete the old one first).
