Okay, it sounds like my system will run Redhat 5.2 (Need a new modem
though). So, besides going out and buying an expensive book, does
anyone know of a reliable, good online text on the step by step
instructions on how to install RedHat 5.2? I really don't want to
search for one, because I am not sure if it will be good or not. I
have yet to receive the CD, but will there be a text that I can use
that is included on the CD?

Thanks!

Subject: How I would like to mangle my filesystem...

Forgive the length of this post...

I currently have / on /dev/hdb1.

What I would like to do is use the "ex's" M$ hard drive which is
/dev/hda1

What I want to do is the following:

1. use fdisk and erradicate the remains of M$ from my machine and make a
ext2 and a 32M swap space partition.

2. run lilo to revamp the MBR.

3. move "mv" /usr to the ext2 partion to /dev/hda1

4. fix my fstab to reflect the above changes.

5. umount and remount and swapon the above.

Will this work?

Post or E-mail response. Remove SPAM to E-mail

Thanks in advance

Hi :

I have Redhat 5.2 (Apollo) on my AMD-K6 233 PC with ESS 1868 PnP sound card .

Everytime when I start to play mp3 files using mpg123 or xaudio(
http://www.xaudio.com ), it suddenly stop and keyboard is locked also , I have
to reboot my machine . It can play CD very well .

It is also strange that it worked very well on Redhat 5.1 before .

Is it the problem in kernel , device or library ?

Would the kind person who posted on how to suppress the named

obviously missing something. (A brain cell or three?) No
debugging is switched on in named.

It wont help a bit. I was in the same situtation when I first switched to
Linux. Although I read all the documentation and everything seemed fine (so
though others too) i would get the same problem as you do. Connect and then
being unable to do anything with the connection. I believe its their server.
The one I was using wouldn't work under NT either only under windows 95. I
never understood what the problems was but I got tired of tech support and
their "We dont support Linux" or worst "I am sorry we don't support win 3.1
or dos". I just switched to another provider and lived happily ever after.
And by the way if you had looked at http://www.crown-net.com/config.htm you
would have found out that the nameserver is 194.184.44.10. Sure enough
connecting to their ftp server reveals Connected to mail.crown-net.com. 220
poly-alpha21164 Microsoft FTP Service (Version 3.0). Yeh that was absolutely
unexpected.

this is simply not true. hardlinks *do* work for directories.
furthermore, *every* directory has at least two hardlinks.

for example take the directory /tmp. assume it's empty. there are
`/tmp' and `/tmp/.' which makes two links. root `/' has `/.' and
`/..' so even on an empty filesystem it still has two.

If the processes don't cooperate, your files may be corrupted.

If the processes don't cooperate, the reading process may
find the file in an inconsistent state.

Yes. Advisory locking is the most common solution, but there is
also some support for mandatory locking. For more information,
see "man flock", "man fcntl", or:

    http://www.ssc.com/cgi-bin/linux/man.cgi?mode=search&comm=fcntl

You may also want to take at look at these files:

    /usr/src/linux/Documentation/mandatory.txt

Subject: Is anyone interested in Linux drivers for Dialogic boards? Tell Dialogic...
Date: Sun, 24 Jan 1999 14:34:55 -0600

Dialogic, one of the leading Computer Telephony hardware vendors, is trying
to ascertain the amount of interest in Linux drivers for their hardware.

The survey is at http://www.linuxtelephony.org/dialogic_survey.htm and will
be closed sometime on January 29, 1999.

In the past, for at least the two to three years I have been trying,
Dialogic has always responded with "there are no plans to support Linux"
when asked for drivers or support. Requests from several customers for the
specs so that others could write the drivers were turned down, even when
offers to develop under NDA and return the results to Dialogic for
distribution were given.

Around January 10th, a Dialogic person asked a few questions to determine
how many people and/or companies were interested in Linux drivers for their
hardware. I have posted these questions at
http://www.linuxtelephony.org/dialogic_survey.htm.

If you are interested in Computer Telephony using Linux, and would like to
see Dialogic drivers for Linux, then please take a few seconds to fill out
and submit this survey. The results are sent directly to the person
requesting the information. In addition, at the completion of the survey,
the results will be published in a report and given to several others in
Dialogic.

Right now, the survey is scheduled to end on January 29.

Thank you,
Gregory S. Youngblood

Subject: Partitions - and a bug with "df -k"?
Date: Sun, 24 Jan 1999 15:31:54 -0500

Hi all,

I'm a little bit of a Linux newbie, but not a total buffoon, however, I'm
stumped by one problem.

I've now installed Red Hat 5.2 twice and both times have had the same quirk
pop-up.

When using Disk Druid and fdisk, I partition my 8.4Gig hard drive so that I
have

hdb6 - 100M - /
hdb7 - 1500M - /usr
hdb8 - 500M - /home
hdb9 - 127M - swap

Well, that's all fine and dandy, and when I run linuxconf, that's what is
reported. However, when I run "df -k", it reports that "/" is mounted on
the 1500M drive (at 2% capacity), /usr is mounted on the 500M drive (at 47%
capacity) and "/home" is mounted on the 100M drive (at 14% capacity).

Obviously, something is wrong. I'm hoping it's a bug with "df", but I'm not
sure. Can anyone help me out with this?

Ok. I've just downloaded and installed the 2.2 kernel also, and have half
the problem you are describing. If you update your sysklogd (I'm running
1.3-26) the first two lines will come right - the kernel should load the
module symbols and you'll then have modules working perfectly. You can get
sysklogd from ftp://rawhide.redhat.com ; the best way to do this is to
download the .src.rpm file and do an rpm --rebuild sysklogd-1.36 (or whatever
the filename is) on the file you download. Then install the binary as per
normal from /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386

I'm also experiencing the same problems as you on the second two lines and
haven't found a fix for that yet. I don't however notice any problems with
my system. The only thing I can't upgrade as per the Documentation/Changes
file is my util-linux rpm - when I last installed this I could no longer log
on. This util-linux update may be all I need <shrug> Now I cannot rebuild
the binary of this set of programs from the source. I'm guessing there's
something else I need to update or install for this to work :>

Hope this helps solve your problems. I know it's awkward to get every little
thing going 100% with no errors sometimes :)

Reuben
